Buxton's Strikeouts in AAA

Tom Kelly told Reusse that he thinks Buxton is "long." Kid just needs to shorten his swing and he'll be OK. Indeed, it seems to me that this suggests his problems at the major league level are due to a hitch in his swing and not something more serious.

Hope so, anyway. But I'm still guessing he gets up here by the All Star break. At least I'm hoping.

Last year he was awful when he started but toward the end of the year he really started to come around. It was unfortunate that the season ended before he could really get it going. And then he started this year with his swing in terrible shape.

Oof.

My personal opinion is that Buxton has too much talent and work ethic to not figure it out.

Typically when we see elite prospects bust, it's because they were overly dependent on one or two tools, or because they didn't care enough to adjust.

However, I think it could take Buxton longer to figure out mlb caliber pitching than anyone here was hoping.

Buxton has been told from his days as a HS player that he's "the next ..."--why would he change anything?

Worse, the Twins believed it also--because they almost had to believe it!   The pressure to build a winner was so high that failure wasn't an option.  Sadly, the Twins aren't all that when it comes to assessing and developing hitters--so they wind up with a lot of young talents that are windmills (Buxton is only one of them).

The problem is that the hitch in Buxton's swing is not much different from the hitch he had when he took BP a couple of days after he was drafted. For some reason, it wasn't addressed much, maybe because his talent was letting him get away with it. Regardless, management should have focused on process instead of outcomes and worked with him to improve. (I hope they don't now throw him under the bus by saying that they tried to work with him.)

Also, he seems to make terrible choices of f which pitches to swing at.

It could take a while.

I don't believe in the opinion that a guy can get wrecked by being rushed. I didn't buy that about Hicks and I don' believe it about Buxton. I'm tired of hearing how they have been rushed or mishandled. Hicks just isn't very good. Buxton is probably going to be up and down a couple more times before he sticks and that's ok. He works his arse off to get better.

If sixty percent of the game is ninety percent mental, then Buxton should be fine within six months. See if I'm wrong.
