Obviously at this point Trout is the favorite to win ROY, but I think Diamond should get some votes. In fact, if it wasn't for a historic year by Trout/Trumbo, Diamond could easily be a front runner. I really hope he gets a little national love for his season.

I like Diamond but Darvish, Parker, Chen, Smyly are probably having better seasons.

Darvish is the kind of rookie that Ichiro was when he came over, a rookie, but not really; Smyly has been good, but not great on a seriously mediocre Tigers team; Chen is doing well but has given up 15 HR's, which is tied for 20th. Parker, though, looks as good as Diamond does on paper.

Is Trout even eligible? He had over 130 PA last season.

Trout, I believe is eligible. 135 PA last season but the qualification is based on 130 at-bats and he had 123 of those. It is ridiculous to base qualification of AB instead of PA but there you go.

 

As for Japanese players, I think we may have established, based on numerous Nishioka-based discussions that NPB is not a major league. The most reasonable assessment I read was that it was somewhere between AA and AAA. Ichiro, Darvish and maybe a couple of others come over as mature, highly polished and very talented players but we occasionally get those from American minor leagues too. If it is their first year in the majors (or otherwise meet the qualifications) I believe they are rookies.

Twin fans, who were upset at management trading Billy, what was his last name? (Anyone? ... Anyone? ... Beuhler? .... oh no Bullock), to keep Diamond in 2011, are all eating crow in 2012.

 

Plan on keeping your barbecue warm Billy. There'll be lots of crow for you at the end of 2014!

I love these fights, especially given that Diamond is Nick Blackburn with a slightly better K rate... Those guys walk a very fine line for being effective in the big leagues. I'm quite willing to enjoy Diamond, but I have a feeling both sides of this fight will be eating serious crow at one point.

What sides? I haven't heard one single person state that Diamond is going to maintain a sub 3.00 ERA long term, most people seem to agree that he could be a nice back end type guy or potentially a nice #3 if his ground ball rate stays up and his walk rate stays down.

 

The other side seems to do the whole "oh another non hard thrower on the TWins staff, he will be just like Blackburn in a few years blah blah blah"
