You will still need a cable/satellite subscription, so it is not an alternative to those, just another benefit (phone/tablet/computer streaming). Sorry, cord cutters!

It doesn't do much for those without FSN but I like it.  It'll make it easier to watch in bed (where I don't have Dish).

One small step toward breaking the cable monopolies (though they control most of the ISP infrastructure so we'll still have to deal with them).

 

This is going to snowball quickly. I expect within 12 months, a traditional cable channel will offer standalone streaming for a few bucks a month.

 

Once that happens, the snowball will build quickly as other companies follow. Within 3-5 years, I think we'll have a good, if not great, selection of streaming channels to buy a la carte.

 

Unfortunately, sports will be the last thing to offer standalone streaming because cable companies will fight to the death to keep them.

 

And then there are non-traditional cable providers entering the market and offering streaming cable channels... SlingTV is already running, Apple is expected to have their service up and running any time now.
