Clippard and Phegley

Tyler Clippard is a name that has been thrown around for awhile on these forums. Likewise, I have been reading a lot of comments about the Twins catching situation. I think if the Twins decide to trade for Clippard, they should also try to acquire Josh Phegley. His defensive seems like it would be an improvement over Suzuki (he has thrown out around 38% of baserunners, not sure what number is considered good there, but he does have an overall positive defensive rating according to Fangraphs). He is also performing well at the plate in small samples and is blocked by Stephen Vogt at his position. I figure he could split time with Suzuki this year and take over as the starter next year. Even if he doesn't pan out, he is an improvement as a backup catcher and at least gives us another option to bridge the cap to Turner (if he ever starts hitting), Garver, and Swim. Clippard, of course, would become our setup man and help stabilize our bullpen. I would consider offering a package centered around Arcia or Santana for these guys a the A's tend to favor young MLB talent to prospects. I don't think the price would be too high. Thoughts?

The A's aren't stupid, both Santana and Arcia are struggling big time and neither are a sure thing every day major league player. Phegley + clippard: the price probably starts with a guy like May or Hicks.

I agree as to Santana, but Arcia still has a lot of potential/perceived potential. Left handed power is not exactly easy to find these days.

Fair enough. I would center a package around Hicks for them, May probably not.

Why are the Twins trading MLB players for Clippard?  Buxton should go back to the minors and Hicks is the starting CF.

I think it would 1 of the Gonsalves, Kepler, Hu, Thorpe, Polanco, Gordon or Stewart types for Clippard.  Toss in another one or two for Phegley.

Phegley is under team control until 2021. He is showing the power that he flashed in the minors. They just acquired him from the White Sox in the Smardzija deal. I am sure they would trade him to anyone who would overpay, but they have absolutely no reason to be selling him otherwise. He has much more value than a throw in on a Clippard deal.

They should be motivated to trade Clippard.

I was just pointing out the price for phegley would be higher than a Santana or Arcia type.

I think you could get clippard for a couple mid 20's prospects potentially. Maybe Polanco, Dean and one more guy in that range for Clippard?

I wouldn't mind going after Kazmir as well. Clear upgrade over most of the rotation, allows you to put Pelfrey in the pen where he could be a real nice asset IMO.

Kazmir+Clippard would be a package I would be willing to give up a decent package for.

I just don't see the need to acquire a rental rotation arm (like Kazmir). Honestly I see Phegley as the real prize here. The way I see it, we give up something of value (maybe prospects, maybe MLB ready talent) for Phegley and see if the As will throw Clippard in as a bonus

Polanco is a mid-20s prospect? No. And for a <70 game rental of a RP? No.

You put Phegley into that equation w/ Clippard, and then you've probably got something.  But I would think Beane would hold the Twins up for Polanco, a AAA SP not named Berrios and another MLB -ready position player... given Semien's troubles at SS, wouldn't Santana fill the bill better (for the Twins, that is) instead of Polanco, and add Arcia and another mid-teens prospect in to seal the deal?

The A's aren't just going to toss in Clippard like some PTNBL. Kazmir would be a no brainer, he is a significant upgrade over a good chunk of the Twins current rotation and there is a good chance he would instantly become the staff "ace", NTM the Twins will lose Santana if they make the playoffs.

Regular season rotation:

Kazmir: 2.38 ERA  8.3 k/9

Gibson: 2.85 ERA

Santana: 3.66 ERA

Hughes: 4.15 ERA (2.85 ERA last 6 starts)

Milone: Solid as of late other then yesterdays hiccup.

Plus you get to put Pelfrey in the pen where he could be a real asset and the path for May to rejoin the rotation perhaps becomes easier with KAzmir being a LHP and if Milone struggles.

Playoff rotation:

Kazmir

Gibson

Hughes

one of May or Milone.

I'm not suggesting Clippard is a PTBNL, I'm just saying that his acquisition is secondary for the Twins because he is a rental. Now isn't the time to trade the farm for 2 month rentals without acquiring young talent as well. Kazmir isn't part of the future of this team. Also Kazmir's splits away from Oakland aren't fantastic this season.

Vogt is a 30-year old catcher playing above what logic dictates he should be doing.  Almost certainly he is the catcher that Beane will be looking to deal.  Beane will keep Phegley around for a couple years hoping his value increases than do the same to him.

Vogt is not the guy I would expect to put behind the plate for 100+ games a season for the next few years, so I would keep my catching prospect and see if someone overpays for Vogt, who will essentially become a utilityguy who can catch in the future. Not that abd of a job, but not someone to overpay for.

The Twins can afford rentals, but besides getting rid of prospects, can they get anything for anyone the rentals would repalce on the 40-man or 25-man roster?

It's a shame, but you do see the Twins letting walk Tonkin and Darnell and saying goodbye to Fien and Nunez and Robinson for sure once the season ends. They also lose Pelfrey and have to make a hard-decision on Milone. Pretty much everyone on the Rochester roster is a minor league free agent, from Oliveros to Pryor to Rodriguez and Ramirez, not to mention Bernier and Paulino (and de san Miguel). Herrmann and Fryer can also take a walk. They say goodbye to Beresford and Hanson.

Is there any reason you keep around Hamburger and Peavey, except for depth.,

I just threw out quite a few names that have little or no value. You could even argue that anyone would readily pick up any of the names above. Yes, some will find work as the off-season progresses.

Insteadthe Twins will be dealing from minor league potential strength and that is a hard call for Ryan and Co. as they will drive a hard bargain for anyone that has an ounce (in their eyes0 of potential. Another poster has identified 50 strong prospects in the system that would be up in the next 3-4 years, but there won't be 50 roster spots for sure. Then, again, the general manager and company have to look ahead at what it will cost to keep the following under contract: Gibson, Berrios, May, Meyer, Buxton, Rosario, Hicks, Arcia, Dozier, Polanco. Most you don't have worries for anotehr couple of years, but five years out the team can start to get expensive and will the Twins go long-term with how many and at how much?
