Jose Mijares 2012

You have to wonder what KC did to Jose Mijares to get him to actually throw strikes and actually strike hitters out. Makes you wonder what a good pitching coach could do to fix a pitcher get out of a funk. Hopefully Twins fans will not have to wait too long...

It was probably more likely he experienced Bryant McKinnie syndrome. He was basically told his sevices were no longer needed despite the fact he played a position of need for a bad team and saw his career flash before his eyes and refocused his energies to prove he could still play, and got himself in (somewhat) better shape to convince a new team he was worth a shot.

As I recall, Mijares pitched well for Anderson before last year. And with the recent improvements in the Twins starting pitching and the recent awesomeness of the bullpen, some people could argue that Anderson deserves at least some credit for some of the good things that are happening.

Also, Mijares seemed lazy and out of shape last year. Per the Royals announcers, he came in to spring training in great shape this year. Maybe getting released was a wake up call for him.

Mijares got the wake up call he needed. He definitely looks trimmer, is throwing harder and throwing more strikes. Sometimes it takes a shot like being non-tendered to give the committment needed to succeed. I always liked Mijares, but I don't blame the Twins for not getting the rperformance out of him or letting him go.

Are pitchers ever responsible for their own performance? Do you think that is possible? Maybe, just maybe, Jose Mijares is responsible for Jose Mijares pitching better.
