Is it just me, or did Colabello go into a serious hitting funk shortly after being moved to RF? Do you think he'll cone back to life when he gets moved back to DH?

I'd say it's simply regression to the mean.

Colabello led baseball in babip through the first 3 weeks of the season. That was not likely to continue.

Just the fact he's playing in the MLB still makes it a great story, but he is what he is, and it looks like he's turned back into a pumpkin.

Granted he had a bad year last year, but he hit well in both of his seasons in the minors. I never expected him to continue hitting the way he did, but he's shown the ability over long stretches to hit better than his current streak. I think the mean is somewhere in the middle.

Collabello and Kubel should platoon when Arcia is ready. That is assuming Gardenhire will platoon.

 

He talks about going with the hot hand all of the time which is counter to platooning. The idea of platooning is that you have a good game against the opposite hand and you sit the following day against the same hand. Gardenhire would advocate for playing the guy following a good game.

His AAA season was somewhat impressive, but an .836 OPS in AA for a guy with a ton of pro experience, and nearly 4 years older than the league as a 1B/DH type is not all that impressive to me.

Calling Can-Am league pro is pretty generous. Chris has said himself, there were a lot of years he played for free. He was playing against kids who couldn't get into low A level baseball. It's closer to legion ball than it is to the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Older sure, but throw me into AA as a guy who's older than the rest of the players around him, and to say I would be woefully overmatched is an understatement.

 

That's not to say that Chris didn't get any development during his time in Can-Am, but for the most part, the competition couldn't have been there. I think it says a lot about a guy to make that kind of a jump and still be somewhat successful in his first year in minor league ball. Similarly, he made the jump from AAA to the bigs, and in his second season has found a month of success so far, I hope he can regain momentum in May to continue to be a successful and contributing big leaguer, even if in a platoon.
