QUICK!!! Is Royce Lewis Good?

Twins Video

What is your immediate knee jerk reaction to this question?

I am thoroughly confused on the answer. I was absolutely sick of reading articles that stated things like... "Royce was off to s strong start before going on the IL".

they would claim stats like .222/.378/.444 triple slash line and a +133 WRC+ to show how good he was.  He was 33% better than the average 3b?????

I think of Royce as basically being a dumpster fire with an occasional HR.  he had a strikeout rate of 33%  12K in 36 ABs.  4 XBH in 12 games.

Yet if you look purely at WRC+ (which is one of the "darling data points" in todays game) he actually was the 6th best 3B in all of baseball.

What does that say about:

1) the state of baseball or at least the state of the 3B position in todays game?

2) The state of how we view player performance or value in general in todays game?

Am I simply yelling at clouds? I just cannot bring myself to say that ANYONE was/is having a strong season when they are hitting below .250, let alone .222.  .222 is closer to the Mendoza line (a historical reference for absolute failure) than a .250 hitter (which is considered a decent average).

This is not necessarily about Royce. I like Royce, and I naively may be one of the few out there who still believe he can get back close to what he was at some point, but how can anyone legitimately say Royce had a strong start to the season? Do you instantly lose credibility with a statement like that? or do I just no longer understand the game today and I should go back to yelling at clouds?

wRC+ is a league wide stat.

Today at 50 plate appearances in 2026 there are 45 primary 3b.

Tristan Gray’s 96 is ranked 20 of 45 (right around average)

Royce Lewis’ 64 is ranked 36. In other words there are 6 teams (including the Twins) with two primary 3b with 50 plate appearances better than Royce, and if all of the 3B players were evenly distributed he would be dead last as a starter in 2026.

Since 2022 there have been 46 3B including Royce with 1000 pas. His 106 over that time ranks 13.

Since 2024 there have been 28 primary 3b to get 800 pas, his 91 wRC+ ranks 19.

the since 2024 one, feels like who he is, below average, not awful. If they give him enough PAs this year, he should come back up to the 85/90 wRC+ range.

So far, Lewis is not even average.

From Mr. Grand Slam to Grand Sham.

He's gone from being the face of the future to just another struggling bat on a team that’s going nowhere fast.

Gut reaction. He looks slow in the field and lost at the plate. If he is not playing through an Injury his days as a professional ball player are numbered. Of course players can turn it around (eg Larnach).

One other item is that a couple of years ago I did a search and at the time there were only 5 MLB ball players with 2 ACL repairs on the same knee but none were on the plant leg (except Lewis).

Royce has lost any trade value so the Twins need to see if he can recover some skill. He will get playing time until at least mid June. One wonders if he (mysteriously) lands on the IL and gets sent to Ft. Myers to attempt a complete reboot.

Doesn't hurt to see what can occur.
