Twins Minor League Report (6/24): Big News for Berrios, Vargas

If not for injuries to top prospects Miguel Sano and Byron Buxton, it's likely that both players would be heading to their second straight Futures Game. With both players on the shelf, the Twins will have the opportunity to showcase some of their other top talent on Sunday of All-Star week.   The rosters were announced for the MLB Future's Game on Tuesday and the Twins will be represented by first baseman Kennys Vargas and right-handed pitcher Jose Berrios. Vargas is near the top of the Twins mi

Few Silver Linings for Kernels

June has not been kind to the Cedar Rapids Kernels.   As a team, they’ve lost a dozen games this month and won just six. The first half of the season mercifully drew to a close a week ago, but the Kernels started off their second half season by dropping three of four road games to the Midwest League’s Western Division champions, the Kane County Cougars.   Silver linings are a little difficult to come by for a team that most people expected to be led by their pitching when the season opened, only

Paying for Anticipation: An Adventure in Baseball Cards

Should you be inclined to see this post with some pictures of my ugly mug posing with the cards check out my main blog page. Otherwise...WORDS AHOY!   I finally did it. I told myself I ought to. I explained all the ways why. I made sure that I actually could do it, and then I did it.   I sold a large chunk of my baseball card collection.   It wasn't doing anything, it was sitting in a box in my attic. When my neighbor set up a yard sale and offered me a chance to sell some things, I went to get

REVIEW: 'Minnesota Twins Baseball' by Stew Thornley

Hardball history on the Minnesota prairie started long before the Twins moved to the Upper Midwest. Baseball legends like Ted Williams and Willie Mays called Minnesota home before making their big league debuts. There was a lot that went into the Twins becoming the franchise they are today and the club's entire history is summarized in the new book Minnesota Twins Baseball: Hardball History on the Prairie.   There are plenty of people who know a lot about Twins baseball but author Stew Thornley

After getting my daily dose of TD, I headed to the sports section of the Strib. That got me thinking, who in the heck has been writing Sid's column?

Reading Joe Mauer

I know that hitters try to read pitchers. Do pitchers read hitters, too? I suppose they do, if they think they see something that indicates a hitter's intention.   Recently I've been watching Joe Mauer's at-bats, and I may have detected something that pitchers and catchers are using against him. It's common knowledge that Mauer wants to become more of a power hitter, turn on inside pitches, pull and lift them.   What I've noticed is that Mauer seems to be tipping off his intention to try pulli

Episode 88: Trevor May Returns

http://assets.podomatic.net/ts/19/ad/da/paulpleiss/1400x1400_9692113.jpg   No reason to bury the lead, Trevor May is BACK! Trevor talked about his approach to pitching, what he's been doing in 2014 that has allowed him to be successful, and how much fun he's having as a member of the outstanding pitching staff in Triple-A Rochester. Just Cody and Eric this week, in addition to talking with Trevor May, they talk about what the Twins have been doing well (pitching) and what they have not been d

Tobacco and Baseball

Did anyone else read Jim Caple’s recent article on ESPN.com about Tony Gwynn and chewing tobacco? In the article he advocates for the ban of on-field use of chew in MLB, noting that it is already banned in MiLB. The topic at hand certainly evokes strong opinions; somewhere along the lines of individual freedoms vs. general health and well-being, with a whole host of other considerations on the side.   I was drawn to the article because I was saddened and angered to learn that Gwynn’s passing was
