What should the Twins give up for Madison Bumgarner?

As the deadline lingers, Madison Bumgarner is reportedly on the block again.   What should the Twins realistically give up for the World Series Champion?   Too much: Any of SS Royce Lewis or OF Alex Kiriloff This was a different situation for Noah Syndergaard, as he had team control for seasons, but Bumgarner is a rental for 10-12 starts. Losing Lewis or Kiriloff would be an expensive blow for a short-term option.   Too little: Nothing including P Brusdar Graterol or P Jordan Balazovic While I d

What If The Twins Don't Go Big This Year?

We are within the last 24 hours before the trade deadline and the market has been quiet for basically every non-Mets team in MLB. Apparently, this has become a pattern around major league GM’s in recent memory, whether it’s the deadline or offseason free agency. The fact is, none of the contenders has done much so far. What if they don’t?   First of all, this is not what I assume is going to happen. I believe that, eventually, teams willing to win will make their moves. But I’m curious to see wh

Shiny Cards Galore with Topps Chrome

Each year there are certain products from Topps that collector's circle on their calendar. While there's products that come in all across the pricing spectrum, it's the flagship design that typically draws the most interest across the board. Making an appearance with a shiny finish is the allure of Topps Chrome, and the slight border should provide plenty of unique looks for the 2019 offering.   From a checklist standpoint, Topps Chrome is traditionally about the big name rookies. These are some

Jake Odorizzi: the X Factor

Although there have been a number of surprises, Jake Odorizzi has been one of the best for the Minnesota Twins. After going 7-10 and posting a 4.49 ERA in 2018, Odorizzi has improved mightily. His 9.4 SO/9 is the highest of his career. Odorizzi had a phenomenal month of May, going 4-0 with a 0.94 ERA and opponent BA of .160.   In July, Odorizzi holds a 9.35 ERA and is allowing a 1.106 OPS in four starts. His last start came at home against the Yankees, where he surrendered nine runs and two home

Old Dude Still Rakes: Nelson Cruz Edition

This winter two free agents jumped out at me as being obvious fits for this Minnesota Twins team. Marwin Gonzalez with his positional flexibility and Nelson Cruz for his big bat seemed like perfect fits for a lineup needing to fill some holes. Despite Cruz getting up there in age, he hadn’t shown any signs of slowing down and the only question was whether that would carry over into 2019. Now beyond the halfway point I think we have all the answers necessary.   After a National League swing in ea

The Gauntlet 1.2; A Complete Breakdown of the Top Relief Arms

R-E-L-A-X.   Some words of wisdom I’m recycling, and it’d probably be best I don’t reveal the source of such resonating words of prudence, humility and humbleness.   After some gut wrenching loses on the last homestand, and now a complete phase shift to an assertive series win (super hard to believe at this point), we’re back at a medium of limbo once again. Just ahead of the trade deadline, this stretch sandwiched in between the AS break and the trade deadline proves as pivotal as ever, now new

Twins Swing Strong Deal for Romo

For weeks it's been apparent that the Minnesota Twins need bullpen help. As we've gotten closer to the trade deadline the certainty that moves would be made has only become more clear. Tonight while in the midst of a battle with the Chicago White Sox, Derek Falvey was working the phones and landed RHP Sergio Romo from the Miami Marlins.   Romo was a free agent this offseason and signed with Miami on a one-year, $2.5 million pact. He was someone I liked for the Twins but the front office decided

Fun with BaseballTradeValues

A few weeks ago, I stumbled across a website called BaseballTradeValues.com. I set it aside for a while, but I was brought back to it after La Velle E. Neal reported the Twins interest in Noah Syndergaard. In his article for the Star Tribune, Neal mentions the Mets desire for a prospect package headlined by both Royce Lewis and Alex Kiriloff.   They're crazy, right? RIGHT?!   Probably, but how far off is it? The Cubs traded Gleyber Torres, then rated the 26th best prospect in the game by Keith L

Blake Parker Was *Not* "The Twins' Most Consistent Reliever"

Greetings, Twins Territory.   While watching the FSN broadcast of Tuesday's 10-inning instant classic between the Twins and Yankees, i.e. what was shaping up to be called the "Miguel Sano game" before quickly being title-hijacked as the "Aaron Hicks Revenge Game", I was dumbstruck to hear Dick Bremer call Blake Parker "the Twins' most consistent reliever lately".   You've gotta be kidding me, I thought. Parker makes me nervous every time he's on the mound. And especially today, against the Yanke

How Good Is Noah Syndergaard?

The Minnesota Twins are going to be scouring the trade market for the next few days as they look to supplement their big-league club. Relief pitching will be the main focus, but adding a starter makes some sense too. I am out on trading real assets for rentals, but a controllable arm could be more than enticing for Derek Falvey. The premiere name out there is the New York Mets Noah Syndergaard. 2019 has been a down year, but just how good is he?   Commonly known as Thor, Syndergaard is a control

The greatest games ever

Ted wrote "Arguably the most exciting game the Minnesota Twins have played in nearly a decade, the home team dropped a 14-12 affair last night (err this morning) at Target Field." In his recent post - Yankees blog. So I got to thinking - what are the best games the Twins have played - win or lose?   Do the two extra innings affairs with the Oakland A's count?   Certainly the game seven Jack Morris game is number one. I was there and will never forget it. (Don't tell me Jack isn't a hall of fame

Twins Takeaways are Twofold

Arguably the most exciting game the Minnesota Twins have played in nearly a decade, the home team dropped a 14-12 affair last night (err this morning) at Target Field. It’s in these last few games against the Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees that two very real truths have been exposed. For the duration of 2019 it will be how each storyline unfolds that ultimately determines the fate of the season.   First and foremost, the Twins are good and can hang with anyone in baseball. There was a na

Strat-O-Matic Baseball: Yankees at Twins 7/22/19

The first place Twins and the first place Yankees clash in a Strat-O-Matic battle of epic proportions! Both teams carry high-powered offenses in, and the while the real life game was exciting, this one was too... for a while.   Game Summary   You would expect the Twins and Yankees to score a lot of runs. Well, you won't be disappointed by this result! The first inning went off with a bang, as both teams loaded the bases with no outs, and both teams came up with 3 runs out of the 1st. The Yankees

Yankees Enter and No Twins Care, Literally None

Every single time the New York Yankees square off against the Minnesota Twins you hear the statistics. Minnesota has been dominated by the Evil Empire. Ron Gardenhire’s division winning teams consistently found their season cut short by Yankees lineups. Whether at Target Field or the Metrodome, Twins fans have long looked at these series and circled them to highlight impending doom. Now leading the AL Central, I can all but assure you that when the Yankees filter into the opposing dugout this ev

Healing Heartbreak: a preview and prediction of the series finale with Oakland

Written by Nash Walker   Saturday was a whirlwind for the Twins. You watched it. You read about it. Let's move on. Final: Minnesota 4, Oakland 5 Series Score: Minnesota 1, Oakland 2 Central Division: Minnesota by 3 over Cleveland   MIchael Pineda takes the hill Sunday and is enjoying a spectacular July. Beating the Blister: a preview and prediction of game two with Oakland

Written by Nash Walker   Game one recap: Eddie Rosario was the hero on Thursday, golfing a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 4-3 lead. Kyle Gibson pitched well and earned the victory on the bump. Mitch Garver and C.J Cron added much needed insurance in the eighth with solo homers. The final: 6-3 Minnesota. Series score: Minnesota 1-0.   Game two is set for tonight and we will see Jake Odorizzi face off against Chris Bassitt. Odorizzi returned from the break with 89 pi

Byron we need you

I had to share this quote from Sid Hartman's column since I too have a concern about Buxton and his ability to be on the field. We really miss him right now and I would love to see him play 150 games a year for us, but injuries take a toll.   I have no solution for him, I love his all out style, but other than a bubble wrap uniform I cannot see him as a long term player. I have had a life of outdoor adventure and the cumulative injuries I have had are all calling on my in my old age. In five

R-E-L-A-X: A preview and prediction of game one with Oakland

The stunning streak is over. Your Minnesota Twins finally fell for the third straight time on Wednesday, losing 14-4 to the Mets. Through 94 games, Minnesota is 2.5 games behind the Yankees for the first seed in the playoffs.   This is the toughest stretch of the second half for the Twins. Oakland comes to town this evening for a four game set, and the Yankees will follow next week. Both teams are well above .500 and Oakland is red hot with a +31 run differential in five wins since the break. Pe

Please Stop Telling Me How To Be A Fan

I attended dozens of Twins games every year in the mid-90's as a kid. I sat through lineups composed of Otis Nixon, Butch Huskey, Midre Cummings and Rich Becker. I watched rotations that featured Scott Aldred, Bob Tewksbury and Rich Robertson.   Then, the 2000's happened. On one hand, it was very fun to see the Twins consistently contend for the playoffs and win 85-95 games every year. But the team never went out and traded for that one missing piece that would get them over the top and make th

Dumpster Fire: The 2016 Starting Rotation

Quick, without looking, tell me the #3 starter for the Minnesota Twins in 2016. Having trouble coming up with the answer off the top of your head? Join the club. Well, let me enlighten you and just provide you with the answer. It’s Tyler Duffey. Yes, the same Tyler Duffey was is now emerging as one of the better right-handed options out of the bullpen. That Tyler Duffey.   The fact that Tyler Duffey was the #3 starter for the Twins is a good example as to why the season turned out the way it did

Baseball Gets Goofy with Ginter

Each year Topps goes outside of the baseball realm with the Allen & Ginter product line. Yes, it’s still a baseball card set, but the product explores avenues off the diamond as well. Ranging from standard base cards to mini tobacco type offerings, there’s a little something for everyone here. Allen & Ginter has long had a unique following and give the consistent non-baseball inclusions that shouldn’t change any time soon.   From a collecting standpoint baseball cards are generally about

End of the Rope for Schoop?

With the trade deadline quickly approaching Twins fans are rightly focused on adding pitching to the major league roster. The offensive is still on a record setting home run pace and has great major and minor league depth, so any offensive additions would be superfluous. However, the Twins may be able to add by subtraction.   Jonathan Schoop may have been the least significant off season offense upgrade the Twins added due to the savvy additions of Nelson Cruz and Marwin Gonzales. However, the f
