Guerra moving quickly toward Target Field

Original post from North Dakota Twins Fan ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-divMdGG9EGU/T6sm7FLOPXI/AAAAAAAABQw/8BPw2hz0XLM/s320/DeolisGuerra.jpg When the Twins traded Johan Santana before the start of the 2008 season, they were hoping to get a king's ransom in return for their two-time Cy Young winning left-hander. If a person believes the rumors that were swirling at the time, the Red Sox and the Yankees might have been interested in trading for Santana. In the end, the Twins settled

Changing Focus: The Danny Valencia & Francisco Liriano Moves

At some (very depressing) point, as a season becomes turns into an extended offseason, the focus needs to change. For the Twins, that change has been coming since the middle of last week. The turning point was tonight.   At some point, the focus changes from the team to the players. The moves become less about what the team needs, and more about what each player needs. It doesn’t necessarily mean coming down on one side or the other, but the balance changes. That balance changed tonight.   Tonig

2012 Day-by-Day - May 9

Through the first 30 games of the season, I am unsure what is more surprising. Twins 8-22 record, or that record only means they are 9 games out of first place, OR that the 1st place team is NOT Detroit. Cleveland is the only team over .500 at 17-13. Detroit played some difficult opponents in April (Boston, Tampa, Texas, New York), however after tonight's loss, they have gone 2-5 against Seattle. Now I'm not signaling there is hope for the Twins, it's just very apparent how miserable the AL Cent

Valencia down earlier than I thought!!!!!!!!!!!

So I was trying to get ready for softball season today. Hit a ball off of a tee for the first time in about 15 years and it was pretty fun. It was the first time I have smelt spring this year. Yes I live in Duluth, we get summer really late!!! I was thinking about the Twins game wondering what the line was first off. I thought it would be Angels -122, it was -145, lost a little interest, but wanted to watch the game. Unfortunately, (fortunately after knowing the result) the wife of the guy

Problem or Solution?

As we suffered through a 99-loss season last year, many of us believed the biggest issue was health (or lack of it) and that a winter recovering would help solve that problem.   While competing with the big wigs in the American League was still going to be a tall task, finishing the 2012 season with just as many wins as losses seemed within reach. I don't think even the most pessimistic fans assumed that 30 games in - and relatively healthy - the Twins would have 3 less wins than any other te

Trading for Prospects: What Arrival Time are We Looking For?

Ranking the best debuts by current Twins

The debut of a player in the big leagues can be a moment full of anxiousness and hope. For most players, they have been working toward this moment since they were a child and the first steps on the field can be a magi

Moving in the Minors

The Twins will start making their second round of minor league moves in the next few weeks leading up to the draft and the beginning of the short season. Here are some moves that should be made sooner than later:   ROCHESTER Release: Joe Thurston and Clete Thomas (neither one is worth keeping around, stealing plate appearances from players who are either prospects or who could be fill-ins for the Twins in a pinch). I am tired of keeping around such players for no good reason. Why don't they sig

2012 Day-by-Day - May 8

Hitter of the Day: Miguel Sano - 3B - BEL - A: 1-4 HR (10), 2 RBI, 1 R; Not a great night for any hitter tonight, but Sano now leads the Organization in HR, with Willingham in 2nd with half that amount (5). I know it's early May, and he has 39 strikeouts (countered with 20 walks) and really needs help at 3B, but a call to Fort Myers is sooner rather than later seems inevitable. There really is no reason to push him, I'd like to see him continue to dominate down in Beloit, but he is simply a ma

Tuesday Night Minor League Round-Up

Scott Diamond and Liam Hendriks switched teams for their starts on Tuesday night and both players found success at their different levels. Liam Hendriks had struggled in his outings with the Twins so he was sent back down to Rochester. He didn't make it out of the sixth inning but he only gave up one earned run with eight strikeouts.   Diamond found himself on the mound at Target Field with a team struggling to score runs. He put together an outstanding start as he lasted seven innings and didn

Introducing the Dregs Division

The Twins are currently in last place in the AL Central and appear to have little or no chance of competing for the division title this year (how about that for an understatement). In the Dregs Division, however, the Twins are only 2 games out of first place.   Dregs Division (thru 28 games)
Team W L GB 1962 New York Mets 9 19 2012 Minnesota Twins 7 21 2.0
Tune in from time to time when the AL Central standings get you really depressed to see how

Random Tuesday Twins Thoughts and Tidbits

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ----   Here is this week's installment: With Jayson Werth out at least 3 months, the Twins have a perfect opportunity to see what they can get from the contending Nationals for Denard Span. Alexi Casilla did turn the corner (Big time) with the glove. He has been by far the Twins' best fielder, using a couple of different measurements: Defensive Runs Saved above average with 8 (second best is Span with 5) and UZR with 5 (second best, Span, has 1.

Tuesday's Rock Cats Report

[Originally published at Twins Fan From Afar]   New Britain had an unscheduled night off Monday, and maybe that was a good thing. At 18-12, the Rock Cats are just 1.5 games out of first place in their division, but are 5-5 over their last 10 games, and had lost 2 of 3 to the Portland Sea Dogs over the weekend before Monday evening's contest against the Binghamton Mets was rained out. So it's a good time to take notice of a few things.     First, player movement. If you haven't read it here or el

Opening Presents Too Early

Brian Dozier turns 25 next Tuesday.   That’s not young for a prospect. This spring he barely made the cut of Baseball America’s top 10 Twins prospects. Above him on that list were Chris Parmelee (who is hitting .203), Liam Hendriks (who is being demoted to AAA-Rochester) and Joe Benson (who was demoted yesterday to AA-New Britain yesterday). He has never hit even double-digits home runs in his minor league career. Prior to this year, he was never a fulltime shortstop in the minors.   Anticipatio
