  1. Was this the best start for Gibson in his career? I believe, although not certain, he has a shutout or two along the way. But against this lineup, 8 inning with 1 run just may be his best night...ever. As for trading him, why? If the Twins are going to compete next year or the year or two after, they need top of the line pitching. Why would you ever trade one of the best. And yes, this year Gibson is one of the best (top 10 or 15 in baseball).
  2. Was thinking the same thing. Was wondering if they are trying to get some pitchers used to entering the game rather than start. Is it the first step in shifting some starters to the bullpen? Or at least getting some experience entering games after the start?
  3. Checked scores last night when the Miracle were in the 5th inning. Saw that Wells had a no-no going with lots of strikeouts. Also see that Miranda was 3-3. That puts his average up close to .280. Once he settled in after an ugly start, he's certainly got the job done. Another kid that is starting to catch my eye is Helman. Was a pleasant surprise when I saw they signed him. Wasn't the last second baseman the Twins had out of Texas A&M a good one?
  4. Was '16 the year we paid the big bucks to Marte, jeffn48? I am beginning to see that signing a bunch of guys around $200k-$400k may be better than going all in on one guy for $3mm-$4mm. Especially now that there are limits on spending. Romero and Graterol seem to confirm this.
  5. Why would he want to, certainty. Knowing he is earning $x for the next several years in a place he apparently likes gives him peace of mind and security. Will an extension be less or more costly, no one will ever know. You are right, we can't force him to sign, but he just might...if asked. On the flip side, once he is gone no one knows what will happen. I value him too much to not, 1) not trade him; and 2) want to take a shot at locking him up in early August. On the other hand, if someone gives the Twins a too good to say no offer, you have to take it.
  6. Rooker-Kirilloff-Larnach. Although Larnach has played in only a couple games, appears all three flat out mash. Is it realistic to expect all three to be playing at Target Field by the end of 2020? But are there enough positions for all three on the same team? Don't know what the Twins will do with Rooker later this year. At or near the lead in the Southern League in home runs, doubles and RBI in his first full season. He doesn't need to be added to the 40-man this year, but could he be forcing the Twins to do so? And another nice outing from Tyler Benninghoff. That's three straight appearances (8 ip) with only 3 hits and nooooo runs! Great seeing this kid get back into action.
  7. Please don't trade Escobar. Sign him to a nice extension, if not in August then at the end of the season. He is too valuable, both on the field and off!
  8. Or is the plan to keep him at Fort Myers, then send him out to the AFL? Would give him a chance to see better pitching, without some of the pressure.
  9. Not only does Rooker continue to rake, his walks are way up in his last ten games (9). Is it possible the Twins could move Kirilloff up another level in early August? Unlikely, but if he keeps hitting well over .300 average for another couple weeks, why not?
  10. This daily post is the most exciting place to go, at least for Twins fans. Great seeing Thorpe have another very good game. Noticed that he has given up 2 or less runs in each of his last ten games, except that clunker back on June 8. Also good getting another sniff of the real Luis Arraez. Come on Luis, the Twins need an on base guy like you. Not concerned with Balazovic. He is very young and games like yesterday will happen. Could Miranda's season been better? I think not. If he keeps hitting like he has he will finish the year around .300. Can't wait for this next group of prospects to arrive!
  11. Couldn't agree more with everything said, Nick. And any get-a-way with the woman you are going to spend the rest of your life with has to be a good weekend. Expect we won't see the front office doing anything until after Wednesday when they see how Santana looks on the big stage. Also expect that Dozier will be moved to Boston when there over the weekend.
  12. Gonna go out on a limb. The Twins are in Boston next weekend, right before the trading deadline. Boston has an excellent second baseman who seems to be out for the year. Makes a lot of sense that Dozier would trade locker rooms at Fenway sometime during that series. You know, kind of like Mientkiewiscz did at the Metro Dome all those years ago! And didn't the Sox go on to win the World Series that year? Or was it a year later? Only question is what will the Twins get in return. Expect it will be less than many of us hope for, but probably more than many of us fear!
  13. Wiel and Rooker just continue smashing the ball. And Kirilloff seems to be hitting even better. Plus every good game/week/month for Rortvedt adds to the likelihood he can someday be the answer for the Twins behind the plate. Looked at Enlow's splits. Take a look at his numbers before and after the break, unbelievable! He and Balazovic could both be special someday. The Twins drafted a catcher out of Clemson in the 8th round of this year's draft, Chris Williams. They then signed him for $10,000, giving them extra slot dollars to help sign all three of the high school kids and the second baseman from Texas A&M. I see Williams is usually at first base. Has he been a catcher in any games for ETon? But the kid sure can swing the bat, although we know a lot of players have put up BIG numbers at ETon and never heard from again. Am trying to remember the name of the first baseman from Saint Maarten several years ago, was it Rene Leveret? Or do I have that wrong?
  14. What an ugly game to watch. I said something yesterday which led to much disagreement. Well, they lost the first two out of the break and it is time to plan to sell...in my opinion. Fortunately, I expect the FO knows this team better than we do and was planning to sell all along. Two of their better players to trade were Dozier and Lynn. Unfortunately, both are cold as a meat freezer out of the break. Doubt we will see six players moved, but hopefully they can figure out a way to make a couple nice pickups. I will continue to hope, however, that Escobar stays with the Twins.
  15. Remember when the Brewers brought up Robin Yount when he was 18. Went on to have a nice 20 year career with the Brew Crew. If I recall, he was a high 1st round pick, but not #1 overall. So it has happened before. Wouldn't it be nice if the Twins could get lucky with a pick like that and have history repeat itself...hey, both are shortstops!
  16. Had a question while reading this, Seth. How long has it been for you doing this? Ober got me looking at the Cedar Rapids box score. He's having a decent season with a spectacular run these last three games. But something about Miranda caught my eye. Was a bit surprised about how little he is striking out...13% on the season and only twice in the last ten games (5%). As you said, Zander Wiel is having a break out season. He and Rooker are both looking like players who could (should?) have a future in the major leagues. One problem with that. They both are somewhat limited to first base/DH. Don't see the Twins having room for both of them. Wiel will have to be added to the 40-man this year or at risk in the Rule 5 draft. Not so for Rooker. Do you see Wiel being lost if the Twins don't add him, Seth? Finally, Seth, do you see any of the three studs in Fort Myers making it to the Twins by September, 2019?
  17. The game was lost in the first inning when Escobar couldn't make that play down the left field line. Normally, that would be a ball the shortstop would catch. Unfortunately, our geniuses had the shortstop playing somewhere over on the right side of the infield. I know statistics tell us the shifts should work. Some time they come back and bite you in the....you know where. And with it goes the Twins season. To have any hope of getting back into this race, they need to win both series in KC and Toronto. Well, that means they have to sweep the next two games versus KC. Good luck!
  18. I don't mind the 7-inning games, Tom. Mostly because the fans get 14-innings or 16-innings of baseball. And you know from the start that you are playing 7. If the point is to shorten games, I would much rather see them play an inning or two extra, then if still tied book it as a tie. So many things happen starting with a runner on second that effect the outcome. Don't know how the Twins farm clubs have faired with this rule, but it seems like we are losing most of them. Didn't like the rule when I first heard about it, don't like it now and won't like it next year if it is still around...which I hope not.
  19. I hate the extra innings rule. Was this Stewart's best start of the year? After a good start with too many walks, he limited the walks to 2 last night. Jax is pitching well at Fort Myers and Moran is settling in nicely. Trevor May and Gabriel Moya are screaming for attention. Please, please, please call them up? Hopefully, a few spots will open in the pen during the next ten days. After a bad April, so-so May and little better June, Baddoo has broken out in July to a level confirming your lofty ranking as the 8th best prospect in the system. Also nice night from Rortvedt in their one-run win.
  20. I agree that '16 and '17 could be special draft classes. That doesn't mean that '18 can't also be very good. To be good, they need about 3 players to contribute with one being a better than average starter. So if Larnach can be that good starter, they need a couple of the other 30 some picks to stick with the team for longer than a year or two.
  21. Why did you have to mention Kinley? I had forgotten about him. The real waste there was taking him and letting J.T. Chargois go.
  22. Gonsalves hasn't allowed more than 1 run in any game since June 11. Yet, he continues to walk way to many batters. Expect that is the main reason he is still in Rochester. Great seeing Larnach on the field in Elizabethton. Always good to see a top prospect being productive in his first game. Arraez hasn't been hitting like we expect from him as he adjusts to AA pitching. Great seeing him with a 2 hit game last night while also scoring 2 runs. If he gets back to multiple hit games being the norm in a few more weeks, will his next stop be Target Field?
  23. Great write up about why Escobar has value. Lots of reasons to keep him and extend him before the summer is over.
  24. Every week or two, Charlie Barnes catches my eye. Fourth round pick out of Clemson says he has a strong background. What do you see as his ceiling, Steve? Is he another AAAA lefty? Or maybe another Tommy Milone? Or should he be better than Milone? Also took a deeper look at all four of the kids pitching for the GCL Twins, whom I knew nothing about. Interesting quartet. Breek has to make Blyleven happy and has been pitching well in the first few games of his professional career. I thought Regi Grace was going to be hard to sign. Glad they got it done. And German is doing well since moving up from the DSL last month. But the pitcher that stood out was Junior Navas. He signed as a 16-year old two years ago, then pitched in the DSL last year. He has now made 12 appearances as a professional (19.2 innings with 2 starts) and has yet to allow an earned run. That's not going to last......but could he be a good one?
  25. Thanks for the update, Nick. You have included several players that I am not too high on. I doubt that Wade, Littell, Jorge, Stewart and Jay will be starters five years from now, or even on the team. I also am amongst the group that believes Lewis will be the shortstop. Don't know what to think about Javier. Unfortunately, until he gets healthy and plays none of us will. My fifth starter would be Anthony Escobar. Yes, that's a real long shot and a lot can happen as he moves up the system. But a 17 year old doing what he's doing in the DSL is interesting, very interesting. Does anyone know if he was a big dollar signing last year? Or another mid-to-low dollar guy like Romero and Graterol?
