  1. Because this should be the team’s goal? In 2019 or ever? IMO, if the best they can do is “probably” be above .500 and have a shot, I’d rather sell Rosario, Gibson and Odorizzi and go full rebuild. I’ve said this before, but IMO the only way this core of players contends for a title is if Sano and Buxton are 5-6 bWAR players and they either acquire or develop a legitimate ace starting pitcher.
  2. Of course, not all of those are inherited from starters. Many no doubt carry from one reliever to another.
  3. I think your predictions for Gibson, Rosario and Kepler are WAY high. Gibson sported an ERA north of 5 the last two years and it could very easily nudge over 4 this year. He’s not getting 8 figures. That would almost triple his salary. When Mike Trout hit arb, he signed his current contract. It paid him $5.5 mil in his first arb season. That was in 2015. Eddie Rosario is not Mike Trout. Nor is Max Kepler. Rosario $2.5 tops IMO. Kepler maybe like $1.5 - $1.7 mil.
  4. Ask the player development personnel.
  5. Wade’s ceiling is Robbie Grossman IMO. And as of now, he’s not close to even being that good. I think you are overly optimistic as to how fast these guys are going to progress. Cave is producing at the MLB level now. Until someone proves they can produce better, he needs to stay at the MLB level IMO.
  6. How many games would you expect a guy drafted last year out of high school to have played above A ball?
  7. Cave has the second highest OPS among Twins outfielders. You want to relegate him to AAA why exactly?
  8. If your perceived value of the player(s) coming back is greater than that of those going out, you maybe need to step back and ask why the other team is making that trade.
  9. So colossal they have a 2 1/2 game division lead. And that’s the difference between a $130 mil payroll team and a $180 mil payroll team. You can afford to take bigger risks and if a guy blows up you still have flexibility to field a contender.
  10. Gonsalves and Busenitz dominated AAA. The results at the MLB level are mediocre to poor. What does that say about the chance for success for a guy that did poorly at AAA (Wade and Gordon)? What is the point of giving someone at bats who will clearly be overmatched? Not to mention starting their service time clocks.
  11. That becomes impractical in an era of 3 man benches. Benches are no longer a strategic tool. They are backups. They play when guys are hurt or need a day off, period. Randy Bush ain’t on anyone’s bench.
  12. His offensive numbers are better, granted with considerably fewer at bats. Defensively, where is the change? He was one of the worst shortstops in the league last year and is again this year.
  13. Not really seeing guys that are stepping up and saying “play me”. Other than Cave and Astudillo. Which really doesn’t help at 1b, 3b or 2b. Vargas was terrible in AAA. Gordon was overmatched. Most of the AAA roster was just plain bad. Quality players are out there. But they are not in the upper levels of this organization. If this team wants to contend, that has to change. Think about 1991. Granted, there weren’t a lot of major injuries. But there were some DL stints here and there. Dan Gladden gets hurt. Shane Mack struggles. Enter Pedro Munoz. Junior Ortiz gets hurt. Lenny Webster produces. As I recall, the Twins sort of piecemealed the 4 and 5 spots in September, going with guys like Willie Banks, Tom Edens, Denny Neagle, Paul Abbott and Allan Anderson. The Twins got some production from all those guys. It helped that Tom Kelly was a master at putting players in position to succeed. But the FO recognized the importance of having quality players that can help at the MLB level in AAA. That is what this FO needs to do. Plus get some talent at the MLB level.
  14. Gonsalves had a 4-0 lead before he threw a pitch. Odorizzi pitched 5 innings in a 0-0 tie. Higher leverage = higher WPA. That’s simply how that stat works.
  15. Sanchez missed half of April and basically all of May. Who makes those starts if not Lynn? By the start of June, when Sanchez started being good, it would probably have been too late.
  16. Given that the back up plans this year were Taylor Motter, Ryan LaMarre, et al, the decision becomes quite difficult. But therein lies the bigger issue - lack of depth.
  17. IMO, Dozier and Morrison saying they were playing “hurt” is them trying to put a spin on poor performance to attempt to pull the wool over someone’s eyes when it comes time to sign their next contract. I suspect it won’t work. Morrison will likely have to settle for a minor league deal and Dozier will be lucky to get one plus an option year. Both are one position players, and one dimensional. They hit home homeruns. Neither is particularly good at the one position they do play. Dozier’s days as a base stealer are pretty much over. One dimensional and they didn’t do that one dimension particularly well this year. If the Dodgers QO him, he would be wise to take it IMO.
  18. So, might be interesting to see what, if anything, Gardy and the Tigers do Wednesday. I wouldn’t expect a big to do since he hasn’t officially made a decision. But I would expect to see Gardy and Mauer do a lineup exchange and handshake.
  19. Might have to do with the team on the field. Pretty good chance 1/3 of the lineup won’t be on the roster next year and another 1/3 that aren’t expected to be regular starters. Not exactly selling hope for next year.
  20. So, I am curious as to how the “primary” does some of his game preparation. From some of the times I arrived early enough at the ballpark to watch, I know that part of the preparation is pitcher and catcher standing 100 feet or so away from each other. Usually in the outfield. That’s done before the regular warm up pitches, so if the opener only goes 1 inning, it would still take place prior to game time. But what about when the opener goes two? Are the Twins altering preparations? Does the primary warm up and then sit for 20 or so minutes? Not sure I love that idea. These logistical type things need to be figured out if the opener concept is going to work properly.
  21. Yeah. Jason Castro.
  22. The same storm that is going to cool off Minnesota tonight figures to be in the Detroit area sometime tomorrow afternoon. If the remnants of Florence slows it down, there could be a delay tomorrow. And that’s a look at the weather, next up: sports.
  23. Repeating, Who? Maybe Hildenberger was having a bad night. But the only reasonable choices were Reed and Belisle, who have been terrible most of the year. Oliver Drake? It’s easy to criticize, but if you don’t supply an alternative action, your criticism is empty.
