  1. But, it wasn't just one month. It was a couple months in the middle of last year at AAA. Berrios certainly wasn't great in September last year, but he was considerably better than he was prior to that. You are also ignoring that the FO explanation for why Berrios was starting the season in AAA is because he was part of the WBC and needed to get stretched out. He's been over 90 pitches in his last 3 starts. He's sufficiently stretched out. The Twins need to find out if Berrios is for real or not. That happens by facing MLB hitters, not AAA hitters. Sure, the Twins are still theoretically in contention. I still don't think that will be the case in July after this team has faced better teams, especially from the AL East. I still think the Twins are about a 72 win team. Santana and even Santiago aren't going to be this good all year. Gibson and Hughes are already pretty bad. The bullpen has been inconsistent. Sano is carrying the offense. That won't be allowed to happen by managers with brains if a guy with a mid .500 OPS continues to bat behind him.
  2. A week or so ago, two runs scored on a passed ball by Castro. I think Tonkin was pitching. Twins ended up recording 4 strikeouts in the inning. Not sure what game. One in the Ranger series, maybe.
  3. No, he really can't. Kintzler will be okay as long as he is used strictly coming into a "clean" inning. If a team tries to use him coming in with runners on base, his failure rate will increase. Sure, he can occasionally get that GIDP. But, because he can't get a K when he needs it, he's more likely to give up a run if someone is on base. Keep in mind, sometimes runs score on outs. Happens all the time. Pretty rare on strikeouts - unless Castro is catching, then sometimes two can score on a strikeout.
  4. The most notable one you are missing is Ervin Santana. Prior to his tenure with the Twins, he was a below league average pitcher in terms of ERA +. Should the Twins also not have signed him? But, that is what happens when an organization consistently fails at developing MLB talent through it's farm system. It is forced to overpay for mediocre retreads.
  5. What makes the decision to start Tepesch on Sunday even odder is that he has been up for more than a week and hasn't pitched. When was the last time he pitched? How can he be expected to succeed like that? If that is indeed the decision, it is poor roster management IMO.
  6. I've only been half watching the game. I just saw on the crawl that a 24 year old A's prospect died. Did they say anything during the broadcast?
  7. The difference is that a doctor or an IT officer has skills that help the military. How do the skills of a pro athlete help the military?
  8. Did you see Sano play last year? He wasn't very good offensively and was downright horrid defensively.
  9. Players, especially pitchers, signing extensions during their free agent season isn't uncommon at all. The injury risk is always one pitch away. They know that and their agent certainly does. Security is sometimes more important than "hitting the open market".
  10. Maybe right now. But the team has still only played one series outside the division. Right now about all we can conclude is that the Royals are turrible. The Twins are about on par with the Sox and Tigers and the Indians are likely to soon rise to become the clear favorite. They are 9-4 since starting the season 5-7. It doesn't change Sano's numbers obviously. His are certainly very good. But to be the MVP you usually need to be on a contender. I'm not convinced the Twins will.
  11. Actually, it isn't surprising at all that a guy who is swinging at less than half of the pitches thrown to him in the strike zone is struggling. A guy who falls behind in the count is going to have to hit a pitcher's pitch. Sure, Mauer still has good enough hand eye coordination to make contact and even to put a good swing on a good chunk of them. But when you are forced into swinging at that pitcher's pitch you are playing into his hands. As a result, a batter is more apt to hit the ball into a shift. True great hitters aren't as predictable as Mauer. He showed some unpredictability in his last few games and, surprise surprise, got results.
  12. If there is ANY market for Hughes the Twins have to jump on that quick. It's too bad the Giants are in the cellar or perhaps they would have come calling with Bumgarner out, now until the break at least.
  13. He doesn't need Gibson's spot. He'll get his own on May 6th.
  14. He probably is given his age and experience. I doubt there would be much of an issue with him clearing waivers. But, yes, Tonkin is probably the guy more likely to be waived. In reality, how good does your mop up guy need to be? The bottom line for the role is eating up innings no matter how badly your pitches are getting whacked around. Here's a funny fact. Tepesch figures to gain enough service time just in these couple weeks to become eligible for arbitration as a super 2 player.
  15. And it won't be. Unless the Twins decide to use Tepesch as their # 5 until Gibson finally pitches his way off the team. I would assume that Boshers is sent back to AAA on Tuesday (maybe Wednesday now depending on how they decide to slot starters). On May 6th I would expect Berrios to be called up replacing either Tonkin or Tepesch. Still remains to be seen what will happen with Justin Haley. His "injury" seems quite vague and awfully convenient. My gut tells me it is a way for Falvey and Levine to buy themselves time while they decide if his upside is worth potentially getting more Twins players thrown at.
  16. IMO Slegers is more suspect than prospect. He pitched so so last year in AA and is not doing well this year. Regardless, he's a product of the old regime. Turley is a someone the new guys brought in. It seems unlikely to me they would bump him to AAA after 4 spectacular starts to move him to the pen. General rule of thumb is that a guy starts until he proves he can't. If they wanted to move a reliever up, they would have promoted Melotakis.
  17. I'm pretty sure Jim Thome hit 7 off Rick Reed one year. 2003, I would guess.
  18. Jim Kaat always said a guys arm will rust out before it wears out.
  19. Another issue with the Chargois injury. If it turns out to be serious (God forbid) and he ends up missing all year, the Twins have a wasted spot on the 40 man roster. There is no such thing as a 60 day DL for the minors as far as I know.
  20. Everyone seems to think Berrios will be up on May 6th when the Twins need their 5th starter again. Berrios would be scheduled to pitch Sunday and would certainly be ready to come up and start on the 6th. I would assume Turley will start in AAA until there is some reason to have him not start. Mejia is scheduled to start tonight. Aaron Slegers would be in line tomorrow, with Berrios as I said on Sunday. Monday is an off day. Turley will likely start Tuesday, David Hurlbut Wednesday May 3 and Jason Wheeler on May 4. Then back to Mejia on the 5th. Aaron Slegers would be the guy most likely bumped from the AAA rotation to make room for Turley if the Twins for some reason decide to have Tepesch or Duffey be the 5th starter instead of Berrios. IMO, it is far more likely that Tepesch relieves Gibson in like the 3rd inning tonight and makes his first start for the Twins in Gibson's place next Thursday. Talk about a best case scenario. I can't imagine a more favorable slot for Berrios than to follow Santana in the rotation. Every time Santana pitches, Berrios' start would be next, so he would be thinking about it. Watching how Ervin goes about his business.
  21. With Adrianza getting a trial in the outfield, I think Danny Boy's days are clearly numbered. It's entirely possible that he clears waivers and decides to report to Rochester. He could try the open market, but if he clears waivers that should be a pretty clear indicator of what the market is. I don't think it is all likely that the Twins try to work Adrianza into some kind of regular rotation. He's simply not that good. He's a back up. Every team needs them. If it were up to me, I would try to put Adrianza on waivers and if he is claimed, pull him off. If he clears, keep him in Rochester, but still let Danny go and call up someone like Palka or Hague or Shuck - you know, someone that might actually be able to NOT have a negative WAR. Frankly, I'm more than fine with Escobar as the only back up middle infielder on the roster. Worst case scenario, you still have Adrianza in AAA and Vielma who is on the 40 man. But that's just me.
  22. Pretty much coincides with the steroid and PED era.
  23. Just a hunch that more than one of those researchers speculated that better testing for PEDs is a main reason why teams are getting younger. Without "help", older players' bodies are simply more apt to break down and simply can't recover and stay in peak physical condition for 162 games.
  24. I think the biggest concern over Polanco was and is the arm. Joe Mauer is a very agile defensive first baseman with quick reflexes and soft hands, traits from his days behind the dish. Some of those bounced throws will get past a guy like Kennys Vargas or Byung Ho Park if they are over there 120 times a year.
