    How is it Sano's fault if he has fewer people on base when he's up compared to his teammates? RBI is an opportunity stat. Besides 79 RBI for a #5-7 hitter is more than respectable.

    In his defense he's been doing both the prospect list and the list of those who just missed the cut for a decade or so, with a quick turnaround, if any readers don't know that it's on them. Besides let's not pretend that anything more than a small fraction of the twitter replies are valid criticism, rather just people complaining that their team's prospects got the shaft so why do they deserve replies? I'm not even the biggest Keith Law fan, but he is unusually open in engaging with people and even if you disagree with his methodology the guy isn't an idiot, he just grades people differently.

    To be pedantic, millennials range in age from 25-40 so it's not exactly the youth of today killing the game. You could make compelling arguments for a variety of reasons, i.e. wage stagnation, cost of living increases, rising debts, etc. as to why people haven't turned out. It's especially disheartening to see a team that typically hasn't spent enough on the field, and I'll eat these words if they change that this offseason, cater to an elite crowd to pad the Pohlad's wallets.

    I never fully understood the lack of leadership criticism Mauer received. From what came out last year around his retirement it sounds like he was more of a behind the scenes guy, organizing ball giveaways after games, showing up every day prepared, setting examples, etc. No one is ever going to accuse Mauer of being "rah-rah" out on the field or in an interview, even if it would have been nice to see once in a while, but not every leader needs to be Rudy-esque. There must be some reason his teammates universally praised him and called him a leader on their team once he retired.

    Agreed, also the Twins weren't going to let anyone else wear #7, even if they hadn't officially retired the number. There is no point in waiting 2-3 years for something that everyone knows is going to happen.

    I wouldn't classify Gleeman's arguments as mad, more defensive and annoyed. But Rennecke did say this sentence without irony. “In Minnesota, we're hardworking people and don't like it if you're being paid and you’re not out there performing.” I don't know if there will ever be a more eye-rolling quote about Joe Mauer printed.

    Unfortunately, the nature of sports where the ultimate goal is to win a championship brings disappointment more often than not. I love those '00s teams, but it's not too much of a stretch to call those seasons failures after only winning one playoff series. Sure, we had great moments and memories that we still appreciate, but they failed to accomplish their one main task.

    If he develops a Jack Morris attitude, does that mean he'll stop letting women interview him? A few "decent" starts doesn't negate an entire career of being mostly below-average to awful.

    Does losing two games deserve this much attention? I don't see any real negatives from this move. The team gets some goodwill and opens themselves up to creating a market in a relatively untapped territory. Sure, Puerto Rico isn't going to be shoveling cash to the Twins, but this is a business and now they can put themselves in a position to increase brand awareness and marketability.

    Again, comparing people at a YMCA to professional athletes is insane. Bryce Harper, as are most baseball players, is in a different class physically than the Average Joe. Jose Canseco taking a fly ball off his head is silly, all brawls are potentially dangerous. Just because nobody has gotten seriously hurt doesn't mean that it can't happen, sometimes being proactive instead of reactive is okay.

    Sano has been struggling, so Molitor wanted to give him a full day off. He wasn't able to do it Saturday so he tried today. I'm not an ardent Paul supporter, but this seems like a non-issue especially for a series in May. Besides in this thread we have blamed Molitor, Kintzler, and the Twins offense for the loss, seems like the team played a bad game and the blame doesn't lie with one person.

    I definitely agree he needs to be playing less, but I don't think Mauer is holding back Palka or Park. The numbers Palka is putting up don't paint him as somebody who absolutely deserves to be in the Twins lineup. It's hard to say with Park being injured, with regards to how the front office will handle that situation. I should have been more clear with the A-Rod comparison. The Yankees dropped him for more reasons than just a bad contract, that's why the Mauer comp is not exactly feasible. This is far from a win-win scenario, but Mauer is going to be on the team through his contract. The team is still a business and Joe Mauer is good for marketing purposes. Not many of the Twins have name recognition to casual fans and stadium seats need to be filled. I think it's too early for the calls to perma-bench or release him. Vargas is getting at-bats, but is far from certain to keep hitting and unlike Mauer doesn't provide defensive proficiency. I hope Vargas keeps mashing all season, but it's no guarantee.

    That won't and probably shouldn't happen. For one he isn't wasting a roster spot, who is being held back by Mauer being on the team? Comparing the Twins and Yankee payroll situation is illogical. Mauer is the only "bad" contract on the team, but this is still a billion dollar franchise. The Yankees had 5 players making over $20 million and 8 making at least $13, all while trying to go younger and cheaper. The Twins had Mauer at $23 and Santana at $13.5. Without even going into personal conduct, suspensions, attitudes, etc. the situations aren't at all similar other than production.

    I don't think aggressive pickup basketball players at a YMCA are comparable to professional athletes. Just like by writing this post I'm not Mark Twain. A 26 year old professional player should have a degree of composure higher than any amateur.

    We should be getting to the point where retaliation is being phased out. Pitchers are throwing harder than ever and pose more risk by intentionally throwing at batters. Besides, a Rule V rookie still trying to make an impression on his team is not deliberately trying to hit another rookie. None of this should allow the Tigers to throw at and potentially injure Sano. A disproportionate response to an accidental situation.

    Not necessarily bad blood, but they only saw Verlander pitch once this season against the Rays. Between the two they chose Porcello, Sanchez, Britton, Happ, and Tanaka from the AL East. Sale and Kluber were I believe the only non AL East starters chose by those two. Also one of the writers did submit his ballot a week before the season ended.

    Sell high on most of these "old guys." Mauer isn't leaving, whether or not this is the right thing is irrelevant, it just simply won't happen. A hometown player, who has been the face of the franchise for a decade, with some impressive hardware is staying. Realistically this team still has to sell tickets and Mauer is a draw for the average fan. Santana should be shopped aggressively, how trustworthy is a 33 year old inning eater going to be from year to year? Aside from that this team is still at least a few years from contending for the playoffs and there is an even smaller chance he is relevant. Plouffe has to go, no other way around it, he just does not fit into the team construct anymore. Dozier is trickier, any offers shouldn't be ignored, but we shouldn't take anything just to clear up space. He has never had as much value as he does now, but the notion that he should switch positions for the Twins is wrong, OF or even 3B is a terrible idea. That is just asking to cut value and further muddy up the picture.

    Obviously record-wise this team takes the title of the worst Twins team. Talent wise you could make a reasonable argument that this year was better than some of the teams from a few years ago. What puts this team in this conversation is the atrocious pitching. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say this is the worst put together pitching staff the Twins have ever tried to roll out.

    Dozier is probably around 6th or 7th in the AL. Fair or not, his slow start combined with how "well" the Twins have played has impacted people's minds. Wouldn't be surprised to see him get a few votes, but this has been Trout's MVP to lose for most of the season. Still an impressive season from Dozier and I hope he breaks the 2B HR record.

    I imagine fans want to see a chain-of-command system like the D-Backs, with more than one person having input. Right now we're hearing that they are at least considering the right type of GM/President. The rumors are guys that have had successes and are competent in modern baseball practices. Even if they came from a bigger market, these guys have to understand that they aren't going to be given a blank check. Who knows, the Twins may pull the rug out from under everybody, but I don't see the team pulling any of the D-Backs moves anytime soon.

    A weak free agent market could maybe net them something of good value in a trade, but that doesn't seem too likely. Until Santana either drops off badly or takes starts away from somebody who deserves them getting rid of him just puts the team in an even deeper hole.

    Of those, Sano might be the most troubling. The other young players have struggled, but it could turn around or it might not, prospects aren't guaranteed to pan out. Sano has proven to be a valuable asset with an impressive hitting prowess, but the Twins seem determined to undermine him every step of the way. Come up in the system practicing at 3rd? Now you're an outfielder. In the midst of a slump? Well get ready to be criticized publicly. We have arguably the best hitter we've had in a long time and because of some baffling internal reasons that's not good enough.
