  1. Yeah, the current system isn't equal for US born players and the foriegn born ones. Of course there are certain other benefits to growing up in the states compared to The Domincan Republic or Cuba. I'm guessing that should they so chose, there would be nothing stopping Smyly or Brady Aiken from moving to Venezuala and applying for citizenship in an attempt to cash in on the international cash pool. That is if they don't mind the constant threat of being kidnapped and ransomed. I'm all for an international draft, but I tend to roll my eyes hearing a 1st world person complain about the handfull of 1-in-a-million lottory tickets that happen to be available to some of these impoverished kids.
  2. Maybe Ryan's just one of those guys who loved to make the substitute teacher's life miserable. Seems to me I usually had at least two of those kids in each class. "Hey Mr. Meyer, our REAL teacher said we wouldn't have any homework today. Also, she hardly ever throws sliders and can throw a pretty good changeup."
  3. Agreed. Molitor made a point about a transition being too difficult because his warm up time is too long, and maybe there's some truth there considering how long he takes between pitches, but I don't know how you don't give it a shot, there really should be nothing to lose by trying, he simply should not be the #5 starter.
  4. That's true, the Cards have done it that way, though Trevor Rosenthal got stuck and never ended up getting a chance to start. It worked for Johan too, though I don't think he would have been in the pen had he not been a Rule V pick. The way Ryan and Molitor have both talked lately, I don't think they want to put any starters in the pen. They don't seem to think pitchers can be manipulated like that, though personally I do. If they eventually did put a starter or two in the pen, I'd fear they would be reluctant to let them back out.
  5. I'm starting May and Meyer until the prove they aren't functional in that capacity. Good relievers can be manufactured from failed starters, and failed starters are everywhere. So if it was me, I'm not going to try to manufacture relievers from unproven starters since they are obviously a better commodity.
  6. That would stink, but I'm of the mind that nothing increases a players immediate value than being able to stamp "closer" on his resume. So a silver lining would be that if the Twins were able to promote a new "closer" (my short-term to intermediary dark horse: Lester Oliveros), suddenly when Perkins is back, the team automatically has a guy with significantly improved trade value simply because ninth inning experience counts 5x more than any other experience for some reason.
  7. You're right, Ryan could very well intend for Meyer to get the job. His comments sounded pretty defensive, though there may be room for interpretation considering Souhan loves to stir things up. I don't like the "earned" philosophy though. Rookies are rarely going to show as much polish as MLB veterans no matter how lackluster the vets are. At some point you have to throw the prospects off the diving board into the deep end of the pool to see if they can swim, even if some non-essential vets get their feelings hurt because he budged.
  8. Better ribs than an elbow I guess, though we've seen plenty of pitchers go down for extended stretches with injuries to their core. Who closes should he go down? Fein? Let's have Burdi MLB ready by June.
  9. I'd like to hear an honest answer from Pohlad, Ryan, St. Peter and the rest of the gang when asked the hypothetical quesion: Would losing 100 games in 2015 be worth it if it meant winning 85 in 2016 and improving from there? All this positive talk makes me worried that the team is still going to go with aging vets over young players simply because they think it will help salvage a few more wins.
  10. Well what did everyone think would happen when a bunch of vets who aren't or shouldn't be part of the future were brought into what clearly called for a rebuild situation? So theoretically, if Meyer never out "earns" the likes of Stauffer, Millone Pelfrey and who ever is their equivalent in 2016, 2017, 2018 etc, he should never get a shot at the bigs. Good grief. I don't want to try to imagine what the future of the organization is going to look like if the team insists on pandering to journeymen AAAA pitchers at the expense of development for guys like Meyer.
  11. The FSL ballparks are notorious for that. I'm sure his luck will change in the Eastern League.
  12. So Danny's regression is already starting.
  13. Not sure I want to tinker with Hughes either. Sounds like a guy you'd want tied to Meyer though. If Allen is your organizations best change up teacher, don't you want him with the guy trying his damnedest to improve his? I really don't like the notion that learning has to be done before a pitcher reaches the majors when your club is supposed to be rebuilding.
  14. They could have signed Chris Young for a million bucks plus incentives. I doubt they would have interest in the Twins high priced flops.
  15. It sends up red flags for me as well though it shouldn't; your middle section really is the main point. Using ERA for relievers is just a not sound measurement. Four bad outings in April could crush one's ERA he could never recover from. Additionally, the guy who comes in with men on base gets off Scott free when he let's all the runners score before closing out the inning. Digging deeper is going to be needed to evaluate relievers.
  16. I agree he'd say 80 wins was a success. But I also think that he believes the club could be a lot better. I don't think he brings in aging vets like Santana and Hunter if he doesn't secretly think they can help the team make the playoffs. I think most of us fans think that is a pipe dream though which is why I believe the team should have stayed the course and kept plugging away with young players, even at the expense of a few extra wins.
  17. Seems to me nearly the whole division is relying on players who had outlier career years last year (Kluber, Brantley, JD Martinez) young players with only one season of positive performance (Abreu, Ventura, nearly everything good about the Twins) or star players clearly on the decline (everyone on the Tigers). There are barely any established franchise stars in their prime in this division; David Price and the injured Chris Sale seem to be about it. Perhaps you could toss Alex Gordon in there. I think this division has a whole lot of average and wishful thinking.
  18. I doubt he nor any other ball player would try to taylor their technique or approach based on road stadiums.
  19. I think the whole division is going to stink. I wouldn't be surprised if there was only one .500 club.
  20. No more players over 30 please. Besides, let these deep pocket teams suffer from their mistakes. They think, "Sure, we can afford to gamble on player X, we got money!" Well last laugh is on them, because they still only have 25 roster spots.
  21. Here is the quote about his extreme pull tendancy: "Extreme pulling is generally a hallmark of a player harvesting power near the end of a career, when it’s basically all that he has left in his offensive game. The most comparable 2013 pull factors were posted by the likes of Jonny Gomes, Raul Ibanez, Chris Young and Andrelton Simmons; three guys who appeared cooked in 2014, and another who is struggling to find an offensive identity. Dozier didn’t become an extreme puller to extend his major league career; he did so just to have one, at least as a regular, in the first place." I'm not a fan of the extension, but Blengino is using conjecture here as to why Dozier is pulling the ball when anyone who has followed the history of Target Field doesn't need conjectur. Dozier is an extreme pull hitter because Josh Willingham and Trevor Plouffe showed everyone in 2012 that the only reliable way to create power is to pull the ball down the LF line.
  22. I'm guessing that's one of their "experts" rankings. ESPN also projects stats and they rank Mauer 23rd and that's with Buster Posey who will play catcher, Carols Santana who will play 3rd, Victor Martinez at DH and Brandon Moss and Mark Trumbo who may be in the outfield. Not very impressive, but not the worst. http://games.espn.go.com/flb/tools/projections?display=alt&slotCategoryId=1&startIndex=15
  23. Molitor could also tell Pelfrey to go to the pen. Ryan can make roster decisions, but Molitor ultimately decides when and where we'll see them. Judging by how long Pelfrey takes between pitches, perhaps Molitor has a point about his warm up time. Still, I'd give the pen a shot for him as his repertoir and velocity could make him a quality releiver. He does nothing for me as an AL starter.
  24. A six year deal for Santana would have been perfect. He was a 25-year-old Cy Young winning lefty, the best in the game. If we're assuming all things remain equal as far as injuries go, he would have been healthy through the first five seasons and only gotten hurt with a month left in the final year of his contract. I agree with not siging Dozier to a six year deal though. He's not on the same level or the same age as Santana, Hunter, Morneau or Mauer.
