  1. I don't think it much matters at this point if Gibson is a #2, #3 or #5. The Twins painted themselves in the corner and regardless of rotation spot, Santana and Hughes are locked in. Hopefully the team makes the right play and sticks Nolasco in the pen or DFA's him leaving Gibson, May, Berrios, Duffy, Milone and Mike Pelfrey on a new four year deal (I must assume) for the other three spots. If Ryan is going to clear out some depth (ha) and move someone, Gibson is the only one who has a tradable contract with enough MLB credibility to actually get you a return.
  2. So five out of 25 is too many young players for a rebuilding team? Can't tell if we're talking to Ryan or Gardy here.
  3. More likes for this one please. Watching this team fall on it's face the last two weeks, clearly the handfull of young players on the roster aren't the issue. The players listed in this post are almost exclusively the only players I like watching lately.
  4. I agree, for all the hand sitting at the deadline, I think Ryan makes a lot of moves this offseason. Overcomepensation for previous inactivity is not out of the question either.
  5. I hope I wasn't sounding like I thought they were. I'm also quite confident they aren't holding back the German.
  6. As much as I like organizational stalwarts Ortiz, Farris and Rodriguez they shouldn't be blocking Kepler.
  7. You don't need much range in RF at Target Field, there's no foul territory and you can barely play hop scotch between the infield and the wall. You need even less range if Buxton is in CF. also with all the shifting, Dozier is basically playing outfield half the time vs left handed hitters. Besides, there's no law against having sub par defensive right fielders. The team has one now.
  8. Roy Smalley played less than 2 years of minor league ball and he played in an era where guys routinely played little or even skipped the minors altogether. I'm OK with Buxton playing AAA if that means Arcia gets one final audition instead of the front office making a fairly uneducated guess about his future this offseason, but Buxton could probably just as easily take his lumps at the MLB level for a rebuilding team than face a bunch of journeymen junkballers in AAA.
  9. Particularly when you consider it wasn't a normal series for the Blue Jays. This was the matchup that pulled the Blue Jays into a Wild Card spot and perhaps showed that they should be the AL favorites. When it comes down to it, this may end up being the series they point to as the defining moment in their season. Had it been the Twins, excitement would have been expected as well. Though I did like Sano's classy non-celebretory trot. Jubilation when your team is winning sends a different message than when your team is actually losing.
  10. Dozier didn't. Others would consider Plouffe a top player right now too. Those guys show a recent history of not extending past free agency. But full discosure, I was in full favor of not extending Dozier past his normal free agency clock, and I'd rather deal Plouffe than extend him.
  11. I agree that the options shouldn't matter. However if someone would have suggested the same thing for Oswaldo Arcia three years ago, I would have said the same thing. Different caliber prospects obviously, but to think that what has happened with Arcia, or Hicks, couldn't happen to Buxton would be dangerous.
  12. Well he's spent nearly 20 years watching pitches come from the opposite arm of the pitcher, to think that he will be better watching the pitch come from a different angle after two decades seems pretty crazy to me.
  13. While fanatasy baseball isn't the same as real baseball, they are both derived on percieved value and Danny Santana was one of the top ranked SS going into this year. He probably shouldn't have been, but I think Santana probably had plenty of trade value coming into the season, after all, doesn't everyone who can even remotely play shortstop? I think fan expectations are high, but if the player is young and controlable, they're probably no higher than what the selling GM would probably ask for in the initial trade discussion.
  14. Though teams do sell high on players, so it does happen and it would be nice if the Twins could do it more often. They did it last decade, though often poorly. I agree that it's silly to think that the numerous people who make up other front offices won't come up with the same ideas as the peanut gallery. Perhaps front offices aren't prone to the raving lunacy that accounts for the deluded thoughts that run through the minds of us fans? If so, perhaps that raving lunacy actually stumbles upon a justifiable proposition from time to time? Or perhaps front office personell may be too deep into the forest to see the trees from time to time.
  15. The Twins are coming back down to where they were expected to be, however it's largely for all the wrong reasons. When you think about regressing to the mean in terms of baseball, you think of players coming back down to where you expect them to be, and the Twins regression should be due to rookies hitting the wall. Rosario hasn't been great the last two weeks, but he hasn't been a huge problem and Sano and Hicks have been the best players on the team. The issue lies with Mauer, Dozier, Hunter and Plouffe who have been abysmal the last two weeks and Suzuki all year. These guys didn't regress to the mean, they regressed far, far below their expectations. The bullpen has been terrible as expected, but the Twins actually should probably be playing better simply because there's just no way those vets should be this bad. Don't tell anyone, but I've already written the season off so I'm not completely opposed to some of the vets completely coming unglued and seeing if the front office will have the guts to roll with a regular/platoon lineup that featured nine batters under the age of 30.
  16. Where did you hear that? Jack Morris implied Plouffe did, and I guessed Hunter wasn't happy about the inactivity considering he didn't like the inactivity the last time he played here, but I didn't hear about any complaining and I figured he'd keep his mouth shut. If he does want to work in a front office, and he is big on improving the team with meaningful mid-season trades, he must have had amnesia coming back here.
  17. I didn't have a problem DFA'ing Colabello as I wanted to make sure Arcia had plenty of playing time.
  18. 24 years and the most games pitched, the last with the Twins, Jesse Orosco.
  19. Who gets the fifth rotation spot now I wonder. If Herrmann got sent down to play more, have to think he's coming up to start. No harm in trying it.
  20. Gibson's a sinkerballer. That means he'll be fine for about four years if he's lucky then bust out like nearly every other sinkerballer in the last decade aside from Tim Hudson. I vote trade him, but for someone young and controllable. A sinkerball is such a poor career choice, it falls apart for you right about the time your rookie contract is up.
  21. Ha, great time to flip on the TV, Morris calling Suzuki lazy! I vote for full time Morris.
  22. I don't know why there is any reason to think Burdi's former delivery was causing control problems. If anything the new one is, possibly it's simply because it's foreign to him. Why try to fix something that isn't proven to be broken?
  23. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qsXVt0qnWg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dyj2sZAWaQ4 He sure looks prettier in the second one, but if it's at the expense of results I'll take ugly. It would also explain why he was still effective last year, the Twins, and likely most teams have said before that they don't work on changing mechanics the summer after the draft. While I'm no lip reader, it sure looks like they are working on Burdi's arm slot in that video. And that stride to the plate makes me want to cry. Why do all Twins pitchers have to have a stride long enough only to step over a sidewalk crack? So much wasted velocity.
  24. His delivery in the minors looks much different than in college. He looked pretty unorthodoxed and out of control in college but the results were good. He had a longer stride and he seemed to deliver the ball from behind his ear. Now he's got a shorter stride what lookes like a 3/4 arm delivery from the videos I see. Seems to me, it would be harder to pick up a pitch that looked like it was coming from the pitcher's ear and a released a foot closer to the plate. I don't need my relievers to look pretty throwing, I would let them do what worked for them in college and only make them change if it didn't professionally or if an injury causes a change of mechanics.
