  1. Yeah, Stewart and Ball were about as consensus as you can get for the top two HS arms.
  2. I like bold predictions, even when I find them based on fantasy and lunacy. I can agree, the last line is 100% accurate though!
  3. It's not the payroll it's the roster spots and length of contracts that are a problem. A team can work around a few years of the added expenses. However you still only have 25 roster spots and five rotation spots. Payroll management hasn't been an issue in quite some time. Roster management has, and it has for a long time, these long term deals just exasperate the situation.
  4. How about Duffey just goes to the pen after his spot start? If he sticks with the team, that's his likely destination anyway. It's not new to him, it's how he spent his college years and with much success and velocity.
  5. And one of them by going the opposite way, right into the rightfielder's glove.
  6. It's possible he is throwing his breaking stuff AND working on his sinker. Lot's of guys throw a sinking fastball, but I wouldn't call all of them sinkerball pitchers. Personally, I'd leave that distincion for the guys who use their sinker for thier "out" pitch. Lot's of sinkerballers don't have a better option to get guys out, hence the high number of balls put into play, but allegedly, Stewart has/had a tremendous slider. If his slider is still a plus pitch, but he's instead using the sinker to put guys away (and by that I mean making the infielders do all the work) I'd be pretty disappointed. Keep the sinker, just don't be a sinkerball pitcher.
  7. I'd like to see Duffy up to stay. Even if there's no room for him at the MLB level next year (knock on wood) if he could manage not to be a disaster he could make a nice complementary piece in any off season trade. Young controlable starters always have value, but they seem to have more if they have some MLB experience.
  8. You might have to clarify that TO abbreviation for us non-Canadians.
  9. The problem as I see it is that Buxton's value is still speculative. You might (stress might) be able to move him for another speculative value, like Tyler Glasnow, however if you want a young ace, he's not going to be enough to get, say, Matt Harvey.
  10. If we're going that route though, I'd still prefer he turn into Clayton Kershaw.
  11. I had always been under the impression that when we've talked about Joe's no trade clause, we were talking about his OPS. These are two separate things?
  12. I wanted Yasmani Tomas as well. I probably would have blown a gasket had the Twins given a multi-year deal to any corner outfielder though, there's no way I wanted Cabrera, and I still don't. Blah, declining power AND declining BB rate? Smells like trouble, and that's not even considering the fact that he'd be blocking internal options for three years. I said I would have preferred Rios or Rasmus to Hunter, but didn't care much either way as it was a one year deal in what was expected to be another throw away year. I was wrong though as it's clear now these reunions are a bad move as it's prohibitive when it comes to trying to move these guys in July or August. The Twins could have recouped some value from Rasmus and seeing as even David DeJesus and Shave Victorino were traded, Rios likely could have been moved as well. That being said, I don't think the Twins could have had Rasmus. He's a southern boy who if memory serves did not take the trade from St. Louis to Toronto well. I think Houston would have had this guy locked down unless the Twins offered something stupid.
  13. Because Joe West appears to operate based on some kind of strange and nefarious agenda rather than normal human psychological expectations. Otherwise, I'm game for the stats.
  14. Yeah, that's a good take. I would also accept the take that Perkins is a human being who happened to get into some literature last year about pitch framing that he found interesting but as he continued to read more about the statistics he also found some contrasting opinions and his view might have softened. If someone on this site doesn't change my opinion about a topic using sound logic and well stated reason at least once a month, it's been a bad month for you guys and gals. I'm not going to pile on the only Twins player that has come out of the closet as willing to at least listen to modern baseball ideas.
  15. I really hope my kids, and all kids, who grow up in this social media era can figure this out. Although what many people would say to an athlete or celebrity's face is likely never going to be the same as what they would say if they were lucky enough to come face to face with them, as all too often the real life conversation would be full of stutters, stammers, um's, uh's, er's and a general misapplication of correct grammar and vocabulary. Same goes for talking to pretty girls.
  16. Considering that the Twins don't trust Pinto enough to catch and he's likey been doing it for over a decade, I'd guess it might be a tad more challenging for Plouffe to become sufficient at it.
  17. I am in no way trying to be negative, but I already stopped watching the standings. I tune in to see how Sano, Rosario and Hicks are doing. I'd be equally as interested in watching how Polanco, Buxton, Arcia, Vargas, Kepler or Pinto do should they find themselves on the roster. I would have even more interest if Berrios and May found themselves in the rotation. A return to contention would be nice though.
  18. I'd love to get rid of the last two years of Nolasco's contract but at this point, I think the club would at least be willing to stick him in the pen. That wouldn't happen with any of the other vets. If the Twins take back Shields then the rotation is locked with: Shields Santana Hughes Gibson Where do May and Berrios go? This club may still even give Milone his seniority first look. I'd think long and hard about giving away Ricky's last two years in exchange for the better Shields, but this club nees to get rid of some of these terrible contracts to these declining vet arms. I know the past rotation woes were due to inexperienced and ineffective pitchers, but in fixing the problem the front office seemed to overcompensate on the experience issue when instead they should have overcompensated on the effectiveness issue.
  19. I'm less concerned with running out of options with pitchers than batters. A batter who ends up needing more seasoning than expected doesn't make sense to hide on the bench where he'll never play. You can stick a pitcher in the bullpen though. Not really any different than how almost all Twins Rule V picks are pitchers they hand mop up duty to.
  20. To be fair, it's harder to find a clear replacement if Mauer's playing everyday and blocking any would be usurpers.
  21. I would guess it's just like finding a rich spouse. Those attributes are great to have, but the actual talent (or in the case of the spouse, a good personality? body? sense of humor? killer slider?) is what is most valued. Not that Torii doesn't have talent. Or a nice body.
  22. I'm a pretty sentimental guy when it comes to the Twins. Personally I like seeing Blyleven, Morris, Laudner and Smalley on TV even if they may not be the best at their jobs, they remind me of the past and I like catching up with my memories. Simiarly, I personally liked seeing Hunter again (minus his political views) as did I Kubel, Bartlet and Guerrier last year. However, if the Twins were smart about this, they would stay a million miles away from these on field reunions, they are bad baseball business. These guys keep coming here on minor league or short term deals, but these are the contracts and the roster spots that a team thinking about the future would use on players that may bring back value if the season hits the bricks. These are almost always where you find the buy low/sell high contracts fans and GMs wish they had come this time of year. You can't trade sentimentality, it is always going to have more value to the selling team.
  23. Well Pelfrey, Duensing and Boyer are the only free agents (also Hunter by the letter of the law) move them, even if it's for nothing just to open up roster spots. Otherwise, wait until the offseason. This team has a much better idea of fits and needs for the future than they have any time in the past half decade. It might not have been as wise to move players in previous years as no one was really sure of what the team really had. Things are still a bit foggy, but much more predictable. Move Plouffe this winter, there should be good demand for him. Hicks, Rosario, Arcia and Kepler will all have some degree of value. Pick your favorite two, offer up the others and trade which ever gets you the best return, trade two if you get bowled away. Offer up all of Santana, Escobar and Nunez and if someone seems particularly interested than see what Polanco is worth.
  24. Well I think a big part of this idea, even if it's subconsious, is that if the Twins de-commit from Torii Hunter now, we probably don't have to worry about the possibility of them re-committing to him in the offseason. I'd like to see Buxton, but even if he was on the 25-man, Ryan coudln't make Hunter sit in favor of the youngster, that would come from Molitor, and there's no way I buy Molitor benching Hunter for Buxton. I do want Hicks and Rosario continuing their development at the MLB level and it's those two who I think would suffer the most from a Buxton call up.
  25. They shouldn't and I don't think they will. The one scenario which may cause some concern for me however is if Torii really wants to play one more season but doesn't find a club this winter who wants him. If he's still sitting out there in February or March, I'd be a little worried theTwins would start thinking about adding a veteran bench bat.
