  1. There wouldn't be any harm if Fryer didn't have to be re-added to the 40-man and if Molitor hadn't already made comments implying there's not enough room to call up too many players. IF the choice was/is between Pinto and Fryer, Pinto should have been called for being a right-handed bench bat even if no one wants him to catch.
  2. You still have two catchers though. A 3rd catcher only comes into play if you have to pinch hit for BOTH of them or they both get injured. The odds of that happening are slim, and even with it, the resulting consequence are so extremely minor it should cause absolutely no consternation; the consequences merely being a choice between A ) letting the 2nd catcher actual bat instead of being pinch hit for, or B ) having a less than ideal catcher (Pinto) for the remaining, and almost surely very minimal, portion of the game. Neither scenario is season shattering and the odds of actually finding your team in that scenario even once in the last month is extremely unlikely. Meanwhile the odds of actually needing a better offensive bat off of the bench is much higher.
  3. Even if the Twins signed him to an extension down the road, his service time is going to be a factor. The number of years he would be extended would still be based on the year when he becomes a free agent. It's not like Ryan and company can sit down with his agent and say we want to buy out two free agent years, but really you guys should only think of it as one because he only played for a month in 2015. We can't just assume that Berrios and his agent will be willing to be extended to whatever length the Twins would prefer. Not that I don't want him up, I do. Just saying when he gets called up likely will make a difference down the road. The Twins can't just erase this decision with an extension, Berrios might not even want one.
  4. Well there's also the less tangible benefit of having the option of not using a full-time DH but instead having much more flexibility to put guys in the lineup based on matchups.
  5. At the trade deadline, are you talking about 11 months from now? the Twins are going to need to start making decisions on the young players this offseason, not next July. How are the young guys going to prove themselves if they don't get a chance to play? Moving the veteran players at over-stocked positions is what smart teams do. Besides, the Twins already have another fall-back option at 3B if Sano can't handle it. His name is Edwardo Escobar and a case can easily be made that he's every bit the player that Plouffe is.
  6. My head says avoid the Jays, my heart says avoid the Yankees. There just seems to be an aura of inevitable doom whenever the Twins step on the field with the Bombers. However, winning one single game against them in the Wild Card round may perhaps break the curse. One game is all it takes to win that "series", and even if it seems cheap, just being able to say they beat the Yankees in the post season might be all they need to wipe the slate clean of embarassing post-season misery. Also, it would sure be easier than winning three games. Or four. Funny thing to say based on the records, but all things considered, I'd rather play the Royals.
  7. The Twins have more players for the corner positions than they know what to do with. It would seem to me that having flexibility at the DH, instead of having one guy locked into it, would be pretty beneficial.
  8. In past years, I had never been too impressed with Plouffe, mostly because when I thought of a thirdbaseman, I thought of guys with high offensive ceilings. It took me awhile to realize that league-wide the position was down, Plouffe was better than average. It's starting to pick up though. Josh Donaldson is going to win the MVP and Kris Bryan and Miguel Sano are looking like they will be competing for HR titles for years. Trade Plouffe now before the expectations for 3B get much higher. Besides, his OPS+ of 100 is the definition of average, and I don't like the idea of a guy who can barely keep his OBP above .300 being anywhere but the bottom of the lineup. Trade him now, he's a free agent in two years and he shouldn't be an extension candidate. He'll fetch more now than he will as a rental later.
  9. It's really starting to shape up like both the Blue Jays and the Yankees are going to end up in the post season, the question is which will win the division and which will be in the Wild Card game. Let us play the hypothetical game and also place our beloved Twins in that Wild Card game, who does everyone want to see? All logic and reason should probably suggest that Toronto is the most formidable opponent as they have some of the biggest and baddest bats in the league and may just throw David Price out in the Wild Card game. But no doubt there will be the illogical voice in everyone's head bringing up over a decade's worth of bad memories caused by the Yankees, who's utter dominance over the Twins, particularly in the post season, can barely be explained by anything other than intangible and super-natural forces? Which path do we want to take? Play John McClane, shout yippie kay yay and hope that the Twins can overcome the much better armed opponent? Or play Father Karras and try to exorcise the inexplicable demons that have blocked their path to redemption?
  10. I know Fryer is going to be re-added to the 40-man but I wish he wouldn't. Pinto should get the call, he would be the emergency catcher and just like 99.9% of all games, the 3rd catcher is not going to be needed to catch. With expanded rosters, Suzuki and/or Herrmann should never have to be called upon to pinch-hit, leaving whichever one that is on the bench as an emergency catcher. A third catcher would only be needed if both of them happened to get injured or pinch-hit for, everyone should be OK taking those odds.
  11. And I think the Twins should oporate under the assumption that there will be a game 163 and set up the rotation to make sure Santana would be pitching it.
  12. Disagree the Twins should do it, I don't see the Swihart hype. Agreed the Red Sox wouldn't do it. With Dombrowski there, they'll be looking for more established arms based on his track record.
  13. I wasn't trying to imply May was in their league. My point is simply that nearly every decent starter would make a decent reliever. It's not like the Twins found a diamond in the rough For the pen. Santana or Pelfrey would probably do well in the pen too.
  14. I only criticized the trade because the Twins traded away one player who required a 40-man spot and took back two. I was more in favor of letting Liriano walk for nothing then muddle up the situation with what I thought were two bums as bad as anyone already on the 40-man. I was definitely wrong. Well half wrong, Hernandez wasn't useful in the least.
  15. The bullpen is the easiest and cheapest thing to fix. Look what the very minimal additions of Cotts and Jepsen have done. A GM who wanted to make truly meaningful changes could do even better in the offseason. No need to fix it by making one of your best starters, who has a four pitch mix, throw 75% fewer innings. Runs scored in the second count just as much as runs scored in the eighth.
  16. I'd rather see May throw 180-200 innings instead of 55-70 innings. Chris Sale and David Price would also make nice closers.
  17. How about Shelby Miller with the 2012 Cardinals. It wouldn't be the first time we've said around here we wished the Twins emulated St. Louis.
  18. Considering Sano's biggest attribute (and greatest weakness) involve ball NOT put in play, I'm guessing that might not be the barometer we base his "luck" on. His very high 31.6% HR/FB rate, now that should be perhaps something to consider, that would lead the league if he qualified. However the guys at the top of that catagory are generally the cream of the crop as far as power hitters go.
  19. It seems this game should cause a lot less regret this year. Those names aren't nearly as impressive as they used to be. Previous years of the "Where are they now" game have featured some stat lines that have made us curl up and cry.
  20. I just think there are very few great catchers; I'm sure plenty are available for the right price. I can't think of an exciting catcher other than Buser Posey, it seems to be the only position in baseball right now where the best players are past or near 30-years-old. Maybe the Cubs found something in Kyle Schwarber, if he sticks. Sounds like that's a big if though.
  21. And after wathcing him pitch lately, he'd be my last choice of the listed options plus Duffey. He's looking tired.
  22. Ha, good stuff. I gave them a web hit.
  23. What if the 26-year-old Escobar is secretly the best SS in the organization both now and for the future? It would be a shame if Goron is never able to live up to his draft position or Polanco never is able to cut it defensively, but Escobar as a starter has been the best SS this team has had since Christian Guzman, who actually, looking back at the stats only once put up an OPS over .700 for the Twins. We might be looking a gift horse in the mouth while pipe-dreaming for a superstar. On a side note, the Twins initial lack of acceptance of Escobar might have saved them some money. Had he been a full-time SS the last two years, his 1st year arbitration figure for next year might have gone pretty high considering his position. If he gets his first arbitration paycheck this year based more on a utility player, the Twins may find themselves with a player who is willing to sign a fairly cheap extension in the future should he prove to be worth it.
  24. I'd like to see those studies if you can find them. I think it's also kind of strange we measure workload by innings for youngsters when we measure workload by pitches during a game. No doubt that the average number of pitches Alex Meyer throws in an inning is going to be higher than Berrios.
  25. In theory I agree, as six to seven starts don't seem like a lot, but I think if he did get those starts and he was pitching well we might feel different in a months time. Hypothetically, if he came up and his six starts looked like Noah Syndergaard, Jose Fernandez or Matt Harvey's first six starts, most of us would probably be asking for him to be pitching the important games. I'd have to think that if Tyler Duffy pitches like he has his past couple starts, he'd also get consideration after only 10-11 starts. Of course this would have just as much to do with the blase nature of the rest of the staff. There wouldn't be any kind of discussion if there was a clear leader in the rotation.
