  1. Also, this line from Berardino: What about the human element that baseball had always worked so hard to protect in the century before replay review and pace-of-game clocks? I'm not sure anyone really "worked so hard to protect" the human element so much as some people don't like change and fear technology. There used to be only one umpire, then two for quite awhile. More were added to help fix human error as were hand held pitch counters, defined baselines from home to 1st and from 3rd to home, foul poles, less restrictive umpiring gear and pre-determined and unique stadium ground rules. The game has always been coming up with new ways to reduce human error. Using computers looks to be a whole different tool, but it's really not.
  2. I'm also not sold on defensive metrics or pitch framing as when I watch games there does seem to be a rather sizable human factor still at play, but perhaps I've just watched Joe West too often. However when Suzuki decries that there is actually a defined box for the strikezone now, and he laments the fact that vets don't get better calls than rookies, then he is saying that any human element in the calls can be calculated and he is in fact making the arguement that pitch framing statistics are legit. Suzuki doesn't realize that he is contradicting himself; it does tend to make his disagreements quite a bit less credible.
  3. This was basically Joe's second extension, and really the only fair discussion should be if the second extension should have been agreed to earlier or if his first extension should have been longer. After getting the tax payers to pay for 66% of their brand new stadium, having 2010 as a lame duck season for Mauer in Target Field's inaugural season wasn't an option. Forget about the business and PR suicide it would have been, knowing the Minnesota legislative climate, they probably would have called two special sessions and drafted a law mandating the Twins keep Mauer on the pretense that it was some kind of job creation bill. Second guessing the re-signing is like second guessing jumping into WWII after Pearl Harbor, inaction wasn't an option even if it seemed like it was at the time.
  4. Should Robinson even be playing RF if he can barely hit 80 MPH?
  5. No Hicks? I thought he could hit 97 in HS!
  6. I think you'll have to be more specific.
  7. Don't see the LOOGY in the fifth too often.
  8. Judging by the game threads activity, it's certainly less watchable.
  9. And it really sucks when it's in the shop the better part of a decade.
  10. Probably an unconscious omission
  11. Are you suggesting Cleveland has a competent offense? I thought Pelf got destroyed by a terrible one.
  12. I could see the case for the NL East, but KC is bouying the AL Central. I don't think there's another division that has four terrible teams.
  13. Looks like the Twins have eight hits all by eight different batters.
  14. What if he doesn't shine in year one or year two? You know, like a normal player? That's what the discussion has been all about. And this has been year one by the way.
  15. If the Twins weren't in the saddest division in baseball I'd say yes.
  16. People get floors and ceilngs mixed up all the time I'm sure.
  17. I don't think it much matters at this point if Gibson is a #2, #3 or #5. The Twins painted themselves in the corner and regardless of rotation spot, Santana and Hughes are locked in. Hopefully the team makes the right play and sticks Nolasco in the pen or DFA's him leaving Gibson, May, Berrios, Duffy, Milone and Mike Pelfrey on a new four year deal (I must assume) for the other three spots. If Ryan is going to clear out some depth (ha) and move someone, Gibson is the only one who has a tradable contract with enough MLB credibility to actually get you a return.
  18. So five out of 25 is too many young players for a rebuilding team? Can't tell if we're talking to Ryan or Gardy here.
  19. More likes for this one please. Watching this team fall on it's face the last two weeks, clearly the handfull of young players on the roster aren't the issue. The players listed in this post are almost exclusively the only players I like watching lately.
  20. I agree, for all the hand sitting at the deadline, I think Ryan makes a lot of moves this offseason. Overcomepensation for previous inactivity is not out of the question either.
  21. I hope I wasn't sounding like I thought they were. I'm also quite confident they aren't holding back the German.
  22. As much as I like organizational stalwarts Ortiz, Farris and Rodriguez they shouldn't be blocking Kepler.
  23. You don't need much range in RF at Target Field, there's no foul territory and you can barely play hop scotch between the infield and the wall. You need even less range if Buxton is in CF. also with all the shifting, Dozier is basically playing outfield half the time vs left handed hitters. Besides, there's no law against having sub par defensive right fielders. The team has one now.
  24. Roy Smalley played less than 2 years of minor league ball and he played in an era where guys routinely played little or even skipped the minors altogether. I'm OK with Buxton playing AAA if that means Arcia gets one final audition instead of the front office making a fairly uneducated guess about his future this offseason, but Buxton could probably just as easily take his lumps at the MLB level for a rebuilding team than face a bunch of journeymen junkballers in AAA.
