  1. I think that would be similar to if Kohl Stewart had a quasi-renaissance and found himself with a 99-ish ranking this time next year. We would all remember what his old ceiling was but we wouldn't have such lofty expectations when he actually got called up.
  2. I've never seen anything but glowing reviews about his glove, but I also don't understand the love for Vielma. Sure, we all want a stud glove at SS in theory but then when we're staring at Pedro Florimon written on the opening day lineup two years in a row no one's happy.
  3. I don't think removing those four and adding Sale makes the Twins a playoff team in 2017. Even if you took Sale off of the White Sox last year, that was still likely a better team than the Twins have now. I'd rather look for an ace when the team is ready to win, assuming they didn't already find one. Chris Sale on a couple of more .500 or worse teams doesn't get me excited. Also, I can't see the White Sox having any interest in taking on Santiago's salary and they'd likely just look to flip Dozier, which in all likelihood would mean a three team trade where the prospects the Twins get for Dozier go to the White Sox.
  4. Arcia produced at the MLB level and was a top 100 prospect prior to his one injury filled season. But Arcia and the even more contentious Joe Benson move have thus far proven the (former) Twins front office right. Also, I'd have to disagree that the Walker angst is anywhere near the Arcia and Benson angst. Both of those moves had considerably less support. Seems to me the posts in this thread might even be over 50% in support of the DFA of Walker. Probably well over.
  5. And there surely will be folks not thrilled that Johnson (and Johnson?) were retained, but frankly I think scouting and the ensuing draft is probably really about gathering data and if the Twins are as short staffed in the scouting department as they are everywhere else in the organization, I'm wondering if we'll see different results simply if more people are hired here to provide more data.
  6. From La Velle's piece: --But there's no rush here to move Dozier. If the Twins don't like the names they are hearing, they can hold on to Dozier and see who caves at the trade deadline.-- I think La Velle somehow forgot about Dozier's first two regrettable months last year. Dozier's 1st half/2nd half splits tend to be monumental and you never know which end is going to be the hot one. That doesn't make for a risk I'm overly comfortable taking, and I'm generally a risk taker when it comes to stuff like this. Unless the offers are genuinely lopsided against the Twins right now, Brian Dozier is NOT a guy I'm going into the year with assuming I'll be able to trade him for better value in July. Clearly they weren't blown away with offers last July.
  7. So did the adults get de-educated? Or did we somehow miss educating a generation or two without realizing it? Because frankly it seems like the first option. For some reason there now seem to be too many people who are just looking for a reason to throw away logic and common sense for superstition and spite even though they were once familiar with logic and common sense.
  8. Wanting a serious education and objective thinking was something most people wanted not all that long ago. To me the rub seems to be that it might take celebrities and social media to help convince kids that education is cool again. Also when that damned Rock 'n Roll came onto the scene, kids started to rebel against their parents ideals and musty ways of thinking. We might need to bring Rock 'n Roll back.
  9. I'm pretty close to being convinced. I'm just going to have a hard time getting over his strikeout issues. I haven't so far heard any logical or believable explanation as to why those numbers will increase. I'm not Nick Blackburn trolling here as he had a couple of decent years, but I wouldn't lose much sleep if the team traded away a guy who profiles like him.
  10. Yeah there isn't much 1B help in the upper minors. Reynaldo Rodriguez and Dalton Hicks are about it unless we're already inking Park and Vargas to AAA. Even if one of them is destined for Rochester, they'll need a DH as well.
  11. I'm also of the opinion the team doesn't have to add players each year. We are about to have a long run with Mauer, Morneau, Santana, Nathan, Gardinhire, Ryan and Cuddyer perhaps. We can take a breather.
  12. So I'm also cool with adding other players (maybe Rosario) or taking on money (maybe Kazmir) to up the return.
  13. Just playing Devil's advocate: The interleague records are tied and the White Sox play the last interleague series of the year and are out of contention but the Twins and Tigers have clinched playoff births. Would anyone trust the White Sox not to lose intentionally out of spite? (Also you could substitute the Twins and White Sox in that scenario and we likely would have board-wide calls to purposefully tank) Home field used to alternate years, I didn't see what was so wrong with that. But maybe that's because my favorite team kept making the WS in odd numbered years.
  14. Clearwater is where the Phillies hold spring training so they are common ST foes, you Florida baseball guys should still get a shot to see him if his job includes spring training duties. Perhaps Special Assignment Scouts are off watching college games at that time though, I'm not sure.
  15. He'd be a good RH platoon partner for Castro at catcher. That's what we're using him as right? I don't know though, seems like too much of a mess for the DH situation and I don't think he's nearly as good as advertised. He was a good hitter last year but he's not great; he hasn't had an OPS over .800 since 2013 and he's turning 35. I also don't know what to make of the "winning" and "leadership" angles. He keeps finding himself on good teams but looking at the rosters around him, I don't think he's exactly the reason why. If people want a veteran leader from a winning organization, how about Matt Holliday, at least he can play OF (kind of) and is a right handed complement to Rosario and Kepler. To be clear I'm not overly interested in Holliday, just an idea for those interested in the winner-veteran-leader angle.
  16. This probably makes it clear that Ryan had no plans on resigning as GM. Looks like he might be a baseball lifer, good for him.
  17. Yeah I came back here after the Joyce signing. I like the deal though he's kind of wrong handed considering the Twins currently have Rosario and Kepler looking for at bats at the corners. Maybe Ryan Raburn, he always crushes lefties, he'd make for a nice platoon for the young left handers. Edit: Falvey would also know him from Cleveland where he had two really nice years platooning. (Also close your eyes and pretend not to see the numbers for his second season in Cleveland) Also, what was Colorado doing with him last year? They had more left handed OF then they knew what to do with, why was he batting against righties so often? Surely they understood that his success in Cleveland was due to hitting against opposite handed pitching? That organization is in the stone age too.
  18. Agreed, there are more usable corner OF bats on the market than there are spots for them. It's probably going to cost peanuts to get a decent glove like Colby Rasmus and if you're looking for a bat Brandon Moss or Matt Joyce are likely going to be quite cheap. And those are bottom-basement 4th tier options.
  19. Wait, you can take yours off? You guys firmly stapled mine to my butt to remind me where all my bright ideas come from. Now I can't even sit down any more to make my rants.
  20. I'll put my money on none of us remembering this move in four years. This looks to me like the Twins trading Anthony Swarzak and Kyle Waldrop for Donovan Tate. That happened right?
  21. Unless I'm interpreting what was said during the press conference incorrectly, these guys are going to be spring training instructors with what sounds like ensuing front office positions with duties which are either yet to be determined or yet to be made public. I'm assuming their initial duties will be of the teaching variety which would make sense considering they have nearly 60 years of MLB related field experience between them. All I was saying is that I would assume that if there is a conflict between old Twins philosophies and new Twins philosophies, they would surely know to stay the course with the guys currently doing the hiring and firing.
  22. Welcome to the site! I think Peralta's defense is declining and it was never particularly good to begin with. He's also only got one year left on his deal which doesn't really help the Twins past this year. I wouldn't want to give up prospects for a rental player in a rebuilding year.
  23. I think the pushback in bringing guys back has less to do with the former players/staff as much as it has to do with NOT bringing in fresh outside perspective. When it comes to a singular position like GM or field manager that makes sense. In this case, we now know how short staffed the Twins are compared to other clubs and these guys are "instructors" which is pretty low down on the totem pole. The team needs bodies to fill the void and it's not like these lower level gigs are going to be a hot ticket position league-wide, getting guys who actually want to be here is going to be a challenge. Hunter, Cuddyer and Hawkins likely see this as a stepping stone job. It may be a foot in the door with the Twins, or perhaps another club. I will say that if Falvey brings in a new hitting coach who tries to implement an organizational hitting game plan that differs from the previous regime, Hunter and Cuddyer sure as hell better be on board instead of pushing old agendas. I can't imagine that wouldn't be a prerequisite for the job though, and they likely also know that boasting that you do things the old "Twins-Way" probably isn't good resume fodder these days.
  24. I don't think they would have to. However throwing in a lesser prospect or eating some of Dozier's $12 million isn't a deal breaker for me if the Twins are getting back an elite prospect(s).
  25. Had the same front office been in place that paid Logan Shafer, I'm guessing Walker would still be on with the club. These were decisions made by two different men. I'd also argue that what the Twins did was simply business as they evaluated their roster and decided that Walker wasn't a fit, meanwhile it was Milwaukee that screwed Walker as they almost surely knew he wasn't going to last on their or anyone else's 40 man.
