    Has Gabriel been bad? He's a rookie. Through the same number of games, his numbers are way better than McCarthy's. And Gabriel has had to play against two good NFL defenses.

    The owners probably aren't going to propose a floor, even though they know they will need one within 90% of the cap, because they'll make the MLBPA demand it. Then the owners get to act like it's a concession they are making, instead of the logical companion to the cap they want.

    I would like to read an article about which Twins are more like bunnies and which ones are more like unicorns.

    I can't imagine they get a 2nd even if they eat the money. Cousins is better than Flacco, but his arm looked dead last year. Maybe it's recovered, but I'm not giving up a 2nd on that dice roll. And if they could get a 3rd, sure, as an outsider I'd say Atlanta should do that, but if I thought I had an actual legit team, I maybe rather have the best backup QB in the league instead of a 3rd. In any case, Atlanta did Cousins dirty. He's still getting paid, but he's lost all career momentum. Might have been over anyway, but decent chance he had another multi year contract coming to him.

    This is a bridge too far and feels like it's inviting a defense of the Pohlad's, which nobody wants to do. Yeah, the Pohlad's ransomed the Twins so we'd give them our free tax money, clearly prioritize their other businesses over the baseball team and are currently giving no damns about putting a product on the field the fans would want. Yet they still aren't anywhere close to Bob Nutting. The Twins tend to be somewhere like 14th to 21st in payroll just about every year. The Pirates are somewhere between 28th and 30th. The Pohlads would have to cut payroll another 30% and keep it that way for the next two decades to reach Pirate levels.

    I'm going to predict he's traded to a team lacking left handed outfielders in exchange for a similarly questionable arbitration relief pitcher. Let's go with the Angels and the Twins ask for Reid Detmers but accept Brock Burke.

    With how often they swap organizations, I'd guess teams find their impact negligible. If a 2M backup catcher actually is making a major difference, I'd have to think they'd be getting long term deals and for much more money.

    Yeah, Gabriel was probably an under-rated prospect. He played at major programs, threw for a ton of yards and TDs and can move. The odds are against him working out, but I don't think he was that much of a reach for Cleveland to draft in the 3rd round.

    Last reports I heard. ATL was demanding a 2nd round pick for Cousins.

    Which I'd be in favor of. Backup glove-only catchers tend to be available all year round.

    Cheap vet catcher is definitely the route they will (should) go, but I'll guess it's James McCann, Austin Barnes or Jacob Stallings. Mostly because I'm sure Derek Falvey will be keenly aware that signing Vazquez for 2M will only remind fans of how dumb it was for him to pay him 30M last time.

    I agree, Falvey was at minimum complicit. He's still here though, so here's his chance to show that he understands the problem and that he's willing to do something different. If he doesn't get it right, it's certainly his last chance.

    I'm not sure how his managing approach was "hands-off and laid back". He was very hands-on from what I could tell. Pinch hitting for left handed hitters in the 3rd inning. Pinch running his best hitters on 1st base with 2 outs in the 7th for a runner that was only minimally faster. These were kind of Baldelli staples, and I think his over-managing was the biggest reason this team couldn't develop young offensive players. Maybe we'll find out it was all the fault of the front office, or maybe we'll never find out, but the odds say that Baldelli should have been able to make lemonade out of at least a few of those lemons, but he repeatedly proved unable to do so.

    I'm sure every owner in the game would be happy to revert back to the collusion era where payrolls were under 30M. The game was different back then. Their magic formula was signing the best free agent pitcher and extend their best player to a record contract. It wasn't special and secret, it was league wide competitive balance.

    I don't think it's terribly difficult for the grandson of a billionaire to get a degree, regardless of his competency in the course work. We're all probably being selfish, we should be thankful he wanted to run a baseball team. He could have wanted to be a brain surgeon or commercial airline pilot instead.

    I was surprised by that game. I thought the Rams would eat the 49ers for dinner.

    For the long term health of him as a person you'd think you'd want to avoid that. But if the muscle isn't contracting due to the botox, I have to presume it is a muscle that is not used or needed to pitch.

    The Strib article is behind paywall. Did the reporter doing the interview really not clarify with Joe if he meant the short term pain was last year's sell off, or if the short term pain was upcoming this off season? Because the 'try something different' and 'you got to own it' lines that follow sound like a reference to this past summer's sell off, implying that roster wasn't working and they needed to start over. This article makes it sound the other way around, and the worst is yet to come, which could be the case, but is there more dialogue in the Strib article to confirm that's what Joe was referring to?

    You might luck out on a lot of punts because I could easily see each team taking turns turning the ball over.

    I'm sure they'll keep Outman simply because they just traded for him, but I'd get rid of him. I'm sure the Dodgers where happy he hit a bit a couple years ago, but I don't think the Dodgers ever thought he was going to be anything special. 181 strikeouts in his unexpected season had to have been a sign that it was never going to work out.

    I agree, but I think he now has less of it. The Twins have been consolidating jobs left and right. The Twins kept Dave St. Peter on as an 'advisor', but they're still paying him, which was probably a negotiated severance. They're going to put him to work if they're paying him. And HR is probably doubling as janitors and PR is selling popcorn at the games. But I think this POBO job speaks to how little the Pohlad's value the Twins as a business. Derek Falvey's background is of a baseball scout. How in the hell is that relevant to maximizing revenue streams, creating a vision for marketing or overseeing ballpark operations? Things that the POBO should at minimum be overseeing. And the same was true with DSP. He was a law school intern that never ever practiced law. He has never had a job outside of working for the Twins, but he was in charge of negotiating FOUR terrible TV deals? These guys aren't qualified for the jobs, they were just already in the building and happy to take a promotion. The Twins are an afterthought at best for the Pohlads and a tool to serve their other businesses at worst.

    Reports are that Albert Pujols is the leading candidate for Arte Moreno and the Angels managerial job. So as I'll always vote to do the opposite of Arte Moreno, I'm saying no to the Hunter/Morneau/Cruz options. It's clearly a bad idea if the Angels are doing it.
