  1. First prep bats taken since 2008: Tim Beckham Donovan Tate Manny Machado (as Bryce Harper was technically a 17-year-old Juco guy) Bubba Starling Carlos Correa Clint Frazier Nick Gordon Brendan Rodgers Mickey Moniak
  2. LH college pitchers drafted in the top 10 since 2007: David Price Daniel Moskos Ross Detwiler Brian Matusz Mike Minor Drew Pomeranz Danny Hultzen Andrew Heaney Carlos Rodon Kyle Freeland Tyler Jay A.J. Puk
  3. Well looking at the odds of draft pick success, that's probably the most realistic outcome for any pitcher drafted at or near the top of the draft. Plenty better, plenty worse. Plenty exactly that. Looking at McKay, his velocity, handedness, draft position, repertoire and level of competition look most like Brian Matusz to me; both had huge college numbers also. Matusz was always a top prospect but his stuff never translated, even in the minors. That's only one sample point so it's nothing to base a projection on and I haven't heard any of the draft wonks use the comparable, it's just who I see.
  4. OMG. My brain is about to explode. Dear lord help me, I'm siding with the scouts over the analytics department. The analytics department which I was begging to be improved for a decade. But seriously, is Lewis really the scouts top choice? And is McKay really the analysts top choice? Or are they only the top choices of the two being offered to them because Greene/Gore/Wright aren't on the table? Seems like the Cubs would approve though. They go for the bats early. Of course they can afford to spend on pitchers in free agency.
  5. Warren Spahn was an all time great. But despite what Bob Feller liked to claim, no one was throwing all that hard back then. There were probably only a handful of guys who regularly hit 90MPH prior to 1960s. Which was also why those guys could go 8-9 innings every start every 4th day.
  6. Also, I think the Boras stuff might be overblown. He doesn't tell his client what to do, he only advises, and there's a strong likelihood that both the player and the agent have considerable interest in striking a deal to be known as the first overall pick. And of course the boatloads of money that he'd get instead of going 4th or 5th. Greene and Gore are likely going 2 and 3, a Lewis selection by the Twins hurts McKay and Wright, not any other prep guys and likely not Boras' other guy Gore.
  7. All things being equal, I think I'd prefer Lewis over McKay. If it is Lewis though, it won't be equal; if it's so they can get Baz at 35 I'd be OK with the pick. Baz would be my fourth choice for pitcher after Greene, Gore and Wright. Watching the top prep bat and the 3rd best prep arm develop would hold my interest for quite awhile. And then Rooker at 37. And stick him at DH in September.
  8. I've heard others say this, however there is no way for the team to know if playing only one position will make an impact; it would be a total guess. And frankly, seeing as guys start to lose velocity around 22-23 years old, any gains made by a new approach may quickly be lost to age. If they pick McKay they are doing so assuming they are picking a guy who throws 89-91 with pick 1:1. I've been waiting to get an ace for a decade. I'm going to be really bummed if they don't get a guy who has a legit chance to become one.
  9. Well this has been a fun ride, but I think it's time to lock this one. Seth wrote an article; let's congregate in the new thread to share our excitements and disappointments together: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/26311-article-twins-daily-official-mlb-draft-day-1/
  10. It doesn't look like he'll be with the Giants long. He could of still be the Twins Belisle! After the Twins release their original Belisle of course.
  11. Right particularly when you are on 'ignore'.
  12. Sounds like he's fitting right in with the rest of the pen then.
  13. So how is Turley's infamous curve? I'm not watching, only listening on the radio to Gladden saying stuff like, 'Some curves are more curvey than others'* *To paraphrase, I'd hate to mis-quote his expert take.
  14. Watching old videos really emphasizes how baseball is marching toward one-size-fits all playing styles. Lopes and Parker's stance and swing and Ryan's overhead windup and drop and drive delivery would get picked apart and criticized if they were prospects today.
  15. I was 50/50 on Greene or Wright. I want Greene now. All reports are indicating that if the Twins don't pick him, the Reds and the Padres absolutely want him. Why are those teams, and surely others, so hung-ho for Greene and the Twins not? I'll take the majority opinion of the known front offices. Regardless who they pick, the decision shouldn't be based on fear/stymga associated with having the #1 pick. If they are making a decision based even in part on not wanting to be judged wrong in the history books, then they're going about the draft process wrong.
  16. Man, it's starting to look like the smart move is just to forfeit the pick!
  17. They still need a sixth starter. I'm not a Heston fan and would prefer someone who hasn't been kicked to the curb by a different team every month, but they do need depth.
  18. I think there's a couple of shortstops ready to get promoted the second the team starts signing and assigning their draft picks.
  19. These promotions of journeymen vets typically draw an emotion somewhere between boredom and frustration. Honestly though, with this one, my curiosity is more than piqued. I'm game for seeing if we've caught lightening in a bottle here. He's putting up some monster numbers, maybe something truly did click for him.
  20. Well I guess this topic can't be discussed civilly. As so, I'm locking it.
  21. Sure, if your picking 6th. Rare is the most productive college player the pick at 1:1 in any draft in any sport.
  22. I don't like to judge 15-year-olds; we all likely did regretful things. But boy, this is bad stuff, and it wasn't a one time incident. He should have the right to pursue a career and schooling, but every employer or school should have the right NOT to be forced to suffer the consequences that would be placed on them by taking on this young man and his offensive crime.
  23. That is sad. He truly is an American hero. Hopefully I'm just reading too much into his bizarre questions and confusion.
  24. Well it wouldn't be any fun without any draft day intrigue!
  25. I didn't get to watch much, but I watched John McCain's portion over lunch, but only on closed caption. It looked like he was trying to deflect for Trump. Did anyone see his testimony? Because reading the closed captions, McCain sounded deluded and unable to hold a rational and logical conversation. Closed captions aren't too reliable though when it comes to translating English. I've long had an on-again, off-again love affair with John McCain. Just a month ago it seemed like he was ready to help oust Trump and then today it sounded like he thought Trump should be exonerated and he thought dog-piling on Clinton was a good decision. This guy has never been able to maintain a consistent personae ever since Bush pulled some of the dirtiest campaign tricks against him in the 2000 primaries.
