  1. Not catering or placating the fan base gets two thumbs up from this guy. Win them over again with WS trophies, not sentimentality and "glory days" tie-ins is how I vote.
  2. I could see him going to his other home town team, the Rays. Otherwise I agree, Joe doesn't seem to be the kind of guy who would cotton to change.
  3. I think I'd rather they try to get Carlos Santana as a free agent. He has all the fun OBP perks but gets about 60% more XBH. He's also three years younger and corner bats are currently the best free agent bargains at the moment.
  4. But do we really have any idea how this was actually handled? All I see as evidence are quotes from a guy who is trying to paint himself as both a hero and a victim with every word he speaks.
  5. Agree with it all, particularly with the fact that people are taking the disgruntled former employee's side of the story as gospel.
  6. That quote was my second favorite after the one about how he said he was heroically cleaning up his whole neighborhood when the villainous Twins dropped the news on him. I wonder if it's even occurred to him that the fact that the Twins haven't publicly disclosed why he got axed and that they did it ASAP is actually a benefit to his future employment?
  7. I agree with the Meintkiewcz take, not sure about Hunter though. I don't remember him blasting the team, I just remember him casually lamenting that they never actually gave him an offer, which no one on the team ever disputed to my knowledge.
  8. According to the disgruntled former employee.
  9. Sounds like he should be a major conference college coach. If your recollection is true, he's lucky he didn't get canned mid season.
  10. I was surprised by the headline. My surprise vanished after reading Doug's quotes. Boastful and indignant and he's surprised he's not coming back when he's supposed to be shaping 20-year-olds? I get it, my ire would be up too, but when fired, there's a reason 99.9% of all other coaches and managers thank their former employers and bite their tongues while doing it. Who does he aspire to be, Ozzie Guillen? He's had a great career with the organization, but a lack of self control and self preservation is a poor example for young players.
  11. So this could get me banned, but I want Ervin Santana and his YTD 29 HR allowed nowhere near Yankee Stadium and Aaron Judge. The WC starter should be the hottest pitcher, even if it means swallowing some pride. The hottest pitcher also has easily the best GB rate of any of the starters; you need that guy in Yankee Stadium. I thought I could do it, but I can't. I just can't say his name, so you guys can just make assumptions about who I want for the hypothetical WC game.
  12. I'm probably the in the minority, but I think I believe in Rosario much more than I do Kepler. Lefties learning to hit lefties is a tough ask, but Rosario can and Kepler isn't. Eddie has made good contact at every level, looking at his career as a whole, last year was a clear outlier. He'll never be a superstar but aside from Sano, if someone asked me to put money on a guy who wouldn't be an offensive liability the next half decade, I'd be most confident about Rosario. It seems to me the only thing holding him back is his twice monthly poor throws. Most importantly, and I could be wrong, Eddie kind of looks like he's the Latin leader in the dugout. I want that guy.
  13. I've learned to live with the rupudedly awful defense of Polanco and Escobar. Give me passable defense and a usable bat over a defensive whiz and a black-hole bat any day.
  14. Not even! Geez you sound like my wife!
  15. Well that movie was from1950. Now what's your excuse?
  16. They've always had unfettered movement, it's not new. There have always been shifts even if not always so dramatic. Should the fielders be required to stay in a certain box regardless of the handedness of a batter? Do outfielders have to remain at the same depth regardless if Ben Revere or Giancarlo Stanton is at bat? Besides, at this point making fixed positions is just going to make the teams that shift to stop play every at bat to put an official lineup change in. The 3B can't play behind 2B? Great, we'll get a five minute delay while Molitor tells the umpire that now Sano is at SS and Polanco is at 3B for the pull happy lefty at the plate.
  17. Well if Kepler could also learn to go opposite field like Mauer and Mauer could also learn to pull it like Kepler the defense would lose it's advantage. It'll catch up to the defenses sooner or later when that's exactly what these pro batters do.
  18. I like the shifts, Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Typically when a new idea is presented, the disadvantaged party is forced to adjust to level the playing field. I think shifts will one day, and probably soon, create a better class of overall hitters.
  19. Time for a patented Rosario base on balls.
  20. Yeah I think he sprained his strike throwing muscle.
  21. I would have loved to get Upton and I'd even hope he DIDN'T opt out if he was a Twin. But he had a 20 team no trade list and Detroit gave him up for a pittance. Upton had all the leverage, I don't think it's fair to assume that's on the Twins front office.
  22. But there weren't that many deals, there were like six yesterday and only one trade was even remotely envious when considering the prospects given up for Verlander. I don't want Erik Kratz or Mike Leake or Brandon Phillips. We're talking about players who had to have a contract or production so poor that all 30 teams already said no once. It just seems so unlikely that anybody overly helpful was actually attainable.
  23. You was it you wanted?
  24. It sounds like folks aren't upset about not getting Verlander so much as they're upset about not getting anyone. Is there someone specific people had in mind? Because it seems like the discontent is based on hypotheticals and avatars. Unless people wanted awful Mike Leake and Mike Leake's awful contract or were OK giving up Gordon, Gonsalves and another good prospect for Verlander (which would only matter in the unlikely event that he was willing to come here) no other pitchers of note got moved. Why are we assuming a good one was available?
