  1. Says my kid every night that he has to do homework. It was a courtesy to allow all teams in the offer, it wasn't a jerk move. And who knows, perhaps some team would have presented him with some persuasive information that otherwise wasn't available to he and his agent.
  2. No kidding, they should have borrowed that machine from Rick and Morty that teleported the house and used it to move Minneapolis to the Bay area.
  3. Tampa? What am I missing? Is Ohtani a fan of shuffleboard?
  4. I'd take Tom Koehler he was pretty good after he got moved to the pen. The pattern with the converted starters who end up making good relievers is that they take off after their first full year away from starting.
  5. Crash was naive, I want my pitchers a mean, intimidating, fascist dictator on the mound. A strikeout prevents errors, sac flies, Texas Leagures, seeing-eye-singles, runners moving from 2nd to 3rd, bad umpiring calls, Eddie Rosario throwing to the wrong base, Steve Bartman and those times when outfielders forget there is only one out and toss the ball into the stands. Pitchers: get the freakin' out yerself and let your fielders chase butterflies and build sandcastles.
  6. I agree, except the population disparity is new and part of the problem. The younger generations don't have the percentage of votes to cancel out the older generations like they traditionally have had nor the bulk income to support them. The Greatest Generation = Just so, so horny. Give it a rest already Grandpa.
  7. I don't know that Santana's shoulder slowly gave out though. He missed 2011 but in 2012 he had an excellent 2.38 ERA and he was back to striking out over a batter an inning until the Mets let him throw 134 pitches to get that No Hitter on June 1st. That was 25% more pitches than he'd thrown any other time since his initial surgery. It was all downhill after that game. Forty-five ER in his final 49 innings, an 8.27 ERA. Fourty-nine innings seems like a pretty abrupt end to me and it's hard to believe the 134 pitch outing wasn't the primary culprit considering he was back to elite form prior to that start; he looked like he had a lot left in the tank.
  8. The Long Now Foundations long-term thinking tagline is just the best, I am totally going to start writing the current year in five digit form! The Long Now Foundation was established in 01996 to foster long-term thinking and responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years.
  9. It seems to me there are two different issues here. I understand (somewhat) asking why so many Boomers are supporting such flat out selfish and awful policies and politicians. It seems kind of unfair to blame them for not being dead and wasting tax dollars though. Their use of resources and services has a lot of similarities to the arguments against immigration, which is largely liberal supported. And yes, I know the comeback is "At least the immigrants are working!", but let them be the hypocrites, not us.
  10. Nope, the training staff was the perhaps the most maligned faction of the organization a decade ago. Well done, on the turnaround. And yeah, thinking about it, the Twins have been pretty dang healthy comparatively speaking as of late.
  11. Having kids is the best. Getting to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas with the family is one of the best things ever. One of the top ten greatest individual TV episodes of all time.
  12. Condolences Chief.
  13. The guy who's going to prove the Earth is flat with his homemade (suicide) rocket keeps getting setbacks. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2017/11/24/a-flat-earthers-plan-to-launch-himself-in-a-homemade-rocket-just-hit-a-speed-bump/?utm_term=.ef1c8e7f4c18 Or does this belong in the Totally-the-opposite-of-science thread?
  14. Santana and his age and peripherals would be closer to John Lackey on the free agent market than to Cobb and Lynn, neither of whom I want. This team needs to remove high contact arms, not add them.
  15. Yup, the Twins need to stop being the team holding the bag on these guys when they go bust. If The Twins signed two superior pitchers and Santana was the #4, I really wouldn't care either way if he's traded. But this team should not be going into 2018 with both title hopes and a blind eye to what has happened to every other veteran starting pitcher this team has acquired.
  16. Santana gave up 31 HR last year, and fortunately 20 of them were solo shots. Of the 11 HR he gave up with runners on, 7 of them occurred in the nine games between June 3 and July 21, the stretch where Santana was absolutely brutal and his early season glow had worn off. He gave up tons of HR all through the season last year but got by early and late because his HR were almost exclusively solo. I'm in the minority, but yeah, I do think Santana falls apart next year. He somehow had his best H/9 and WHIP season at the age of 34 so he kept guys off the bases when he gave up the bombs, but his HR totals skyrocketed and his strikeout rate is failing to keep up with the increasing league trends. If he was a free agent with no ties to the Twins we'd all be looking at his peripheral numbers and nobody would want to trust him on a multi year deal.
  17. Juan Pierre types aren't looked upon with as generously as they were in the past as getting XBH is either directly or indirectly a factor in OPS, WAR, RC and today's other favored calculations. However, if your team top to bottom is already in the upper half in SLG-type statistics having a guy who could approach a .400 OBP at the top of the order still has to be a huge plus. His SB percentage isn't all that great, he probably has to improve on that to be optimally effective, but there's definitely an opening for him to grab the leadoff spot, even if it's at minimum on a platoon level.
  18. Sounds good to me, since Van was on board and he started the thread in the first place.
  19. He'll need the narrative to change. Maybe he'll get in once everyone takes a look at his game logs and starts talking about how his career was effectively over after the Mets let him throw 134 pitches so the team could get it's first ever no-hitter. If he's a league-wide sympathetic figure who's downfall was due to the Mets callousness, he might get in. And it's not like the Mets reputation with pitchers won't help the cause, they are well positioned to play the villain, fair or not.
  20. It would be more about having his type of players as opposed to Kill/Claeys' types of players. Either you have to field a team of mostly underclassmen that you recruited, or you have to field a team of recruits that don't necessarily posses the skill set and body types you are looking for.
  21. Yes, but sadly not in this earthly dimension. I can't wait to see how they somehow manage to make Hell's healthcare system even worse though.
  22. I think Rooker deserves all Top 5 spots. My list goes: 1: Brent Rooker 2: Brent Rooker 3: Brent Rooker 4: Brent Rooker 5: Brent Rooker 6: Nick Gordon 7: Brent Rooker
  23. I find it difficult to believe that a team who's #2 starter is merely league average will have a very realistic chance of beating Cle, Hou, Bos and NYY to make it to the World Series. I stopped being satisfied with early-exit playoff appearances about 15 years ago, if that's the precedent this club is trying to re-establish then the Twins might as well fire everyone in the front office, trade all the players with value and start the rebuild all over again. Again. Because this team does not have the arms in the farm to become a real contender this year, next year or any year in the relative future.
  24. Well if you want to compete with Houston, Cleveland and Boston you're going to have to put together a really good baseball team. If the offense continues to hit but the Twins still sputter in mediocrity because all they did to improve the rotation is sign an Alex Cobb all while Nick Gordon and Stephen Gonsalves are buried by veterans or fail to meet rookie expectations, we're all going to crying about "half measures", "never going for it" and "cheap Pohlads" like we do every year. This team has the payroll space and the prospect depth to make significant upgrades, the stars are rarely aligned in such a way for this team, don't squander it.
  25. Well my view of Santana appears to be quite a bit less than most, so it's not as big of an ask as it may appear. If they're unwilling to make those upgrades, then why are we wasting our time placing high expectations on this club anyway? They're not bringing home a WS trophy with Ervin Sanatna as one of their top arms. Not that I need to argue that, every report from the front office this off season appears to show they agree and are working on fixing the issue. But I don't see how it's out of the question if the Twins truly are interested in Darvish. Sign Darvish and make a trade for another arm. They don't even have to go over their record payroll and they have the depth to trade away a few decent prospects.
