  1. Mauer at the top is a good start. Now Molitor needs to open his eyes to see that Dozier isn't a top-half of the order hitter.
  2. I think you're right ... he chose him over Santana today and we all know how much he loves Dan San. I would say the next call-up from the minors should be Mientkiewicz, but I fear he'd have to become another yes man for Terry to get the job.
  3. In the three days since his glorious return, Mastroianni has now started the same number of games as Kepler did during his 2-week stint in the big leagues. I don't get how there wasn't enough playing time available for someone with actual upside, but ABs are plentiful for a guy that should be a 4th OF for the Saints. Starting to think the problem with this team has as much to do with #4 as it does with the players.
  4. Somewhere Ron Davis is laughing at how terrible Jepsen is.
  5. My thoughts exactly. I was thinking last night's start virtually guaranteed he'd be on his way to the pen ... then he pulled that magic horseshoe from wherever he had it hidden. Maybe we'll luck out and they'll decide it's time to see what Meyer can do in the rotation.
  6. No. Just no. Any team is worse once Mastro suits up for them.
  7. They could do that, but that doesn't seem like something they like to do. The M.O. is to wait, wait some more, play shorthanded, wait, send him out there when he "feels ready" and then, either through, fatigue, injury or illness hits and you're pretty much unable to field a full roster, then you put him on the DL.
  8. Plan? You, sir, you are the winner of the internet today! I think it's pretty obvious that TR made a plan back in the '90s - win the baseball matches - and he hasn't strayed from that plan in all these years
  9. THIS!!! So much this. A young Kepler is going to give you the same, if not more, than an aging Murphy. He might not hit as much right away (although I do stress might), but he's better defensively and on the bases. Enough retreads. Lumps will be taken this season, let it be with the young guys. At least it's something to enjoy.
  10. This series of moves isn't surprising, but I don't particularly care for some of the things that could have been set in place today: Duffey sticks around to make sure Santana can make his next start (which is probably a smart move) or he sticks around in case Milone implodes again and they decide it's time for him to go to the bullpen. If Ervin's good and Tommy doesn't go all Milone the second time through the order, Duffey back to AAA. I'm OK with the reasoning here. That empty spot on the 40-man roster and the lack of bats on the bench makes me believe that ever-aging Murphy and never worthwhile Mastroianni are being considered for bench duty on this team.I like that Meyer has been called up. I hate that he's been called up to pitch out of the pen. I think last year (a.k.a. the Lost Year) had just as much to do with comfort and a feeling of "what do I have to do to finally get my shot with this team?" as anything else. He regains his confidence as a starter and starts pitching really well again and he gets called up to pitch out of the pen. Why mess with what appears to be a good thing? I think TR has made his mind up that Meyer is a bullpen arm and that's the end of it.Not calling up Berrios has made my life 100 times more difficult. Now I'll have to hear countless friends complain about the Twins being cheap and his "service clock."2-man bench for tonight. Not that I expect they'll need more than that, but they've really handcuffed themselves for it being so early in the season. There's time to turn it around, but this is really starting to look like a trainwreck of a season.
  11. I wonder if this speaks at all to Plouffe's injury and/or recovery. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to see Sano at 3B instead of RF, but I would've thought that if they if needed to give Nunez a day off they would've gone with Polanco. Reason for concern on Plouffe?
  12. How bad was it today? I'm in Reno so I was able to watch some Giants/Brewers this morning and A's/Sox tonight, but that's about it.
  13. I don't think I could trust Fien in a blowout at this point. People can trot out his advanced stats to defend the Twins tendering him all they want. But he hasn't passed the eye test the last couple of years and I hope his leash is very, very short.
  14. This could be a reach, but has anyone thought that maybe Escobar is in the same vein as Nick Punto was ... not in a bad way. Punto, when serving in that utility role, battling for ABs and a starting job, played really well - or at least well enough to earn more playing time and eventually starting gigs. However, once those jobs were "handed" to him he struggled. It seemed like that fire to prove them all wrong was what drove him. Could we see a bit of regression, as someone suggested earlier, now that he's been "given" the job from Day 1? Escobar strikes me as the kind of guy that wants to prove everybody wrong and that just drives him more. That said, I hope it doesn't happen that way. I like Escobar and detested Punto. I'll be interested to see what "The Stick" can do with a full season ... see if there's something there full-time or if he's a super utility guy and they need to look at one of young guys long-term.
  15. I knew it was a long shot all along, but I was really hoping to see Kepler open the season in the bigs. Hopefully Plouffe continues performing at a high enough level (and stops rolling over into double plays all the time) to make the Sano to RF move worthwhile. Would've preferred a roster with Sano, Kepler and piece(s) brought back in a Trevor trade, but I'm likely in the minority on that one.
  16. I'm not a Ryan fan by any stretch of the imagination, but a D+? He went outside his box and spent some money on a (potentially) big bat. He got a Top-30 prospect in exchange for Chris Herrmann. He didn't resign Deunsing or Boyer. He didn't go out and find another Bartlett or Kubel redemption project to waste a roster spot on. He didn't overpay for another veteran starter. And, as much as I was hoping to see Sano at 3B this season, he didn't trade Plouffe (an asset) just for the sake of making a trade. Also, he let Nick Punto retire. A+? Nope, but definitely better than a D+.
  17. Granted, this is a no-risk, high-reward scenario for the Twins, I really see no way it works out. He was an OK player on a pretty rapid demise due to constant injuries and age. And now he's older and a year+ removed from the game. However, I'm guessing he makes the team - it's such a TR thing to do. Then it comes down to what do we as fans want to see more. A) A Kubel-like performance that's so sad and pathetic that the experiment is short-lived and we'll all easily forget that it happened, or He gets hot to start the season and takes away playing time from a Kepler, Buxton or Vargas, or even worse they lose someone like Arcia or Santana because of it. I'm honestly rooting for the former ... after I root even harder for absolute spring training failure. If Sano weren't patrolling third instead of the OF, I might feel differently about Carlos making the team. But you can only have so many bat-only guys on the roster when you're dealing with a limited bench. They've preached patience and waiting for the prospects for many years now. And we've done that ... now it's time for them to see which of those prospects were worth waiting for.
  18. If I'm being honest, I wouldn't mind at all seeing Benson make the team as the extra OF. Actually, I'd prefer him over Sweeney and especially over Mastroianni. If he were to start I'd be a little concerned over what happened to the rest of the contenders, but as a defensive replacement, pinch runner, part-time piece, I'd be pretty stoked about it. Even though it'd be a major detour to him becoming a contributor to the team.
  19. I realize people are bored with the lack of activity recently, as am I. However, I'd rather be bored than angry because of a deal being made simply to make a deal - IMO, that's WAY worse than sitting idly by. The fact that they got ANYTHING resembling value for Herrmann, thought outside the box and signed Park and went out and got a young, potentially solid catcher is a sign of optimism. They also didn't reach and overpay for another mid-rotation SP. Add to that the "loss" of Boyer and Duensing, and I'd say it's been a better off-season than most other years. My only "complaints" are that it's starting to look like Sano to OF is actually going to happen and Nolasco's contract hasn't been eaten/pawned off on someone else. If you guaranteed that Lucroy's concussion issues were behind him, it'd be one thing - his bat plays well behind the plate. However, if he's forced out from behind the plate due to concussions (sound familiar?), all of a sudden that bat doesn't look so good.
  20. Sauce is entertaining enough in the a.m. and even better when he drops the dumb guy shtick to do his Saturday show. However, should the guy who regularly refers to the Twins as a raging dumpster fire be emceeing an event for Twins fans?
  21. Average/below average offensive and defensive production aside, let's get to the real reason I never want to see Nunez play in another game for the Twins ... that batting helmet. Seriously, Nunez's batting helmet falling off is the present day equivalent of Lil Nicky Punto diving headfirst into first base. He/they want people to know that they're out there busting their tail and this is proof. A chinstrap for the helmet or a DFA for Eduardo ... there can only be one.
  22. I really like this idea a lot. There's some on my list that others will likely scoff at, but I put decent value on power - both bats and arms - and in the case of a tie, lefties got the nod. In no particular order: Byron BuxtonMiguel SanoMax KeplerJose BerriosJorge PolancoStephen GonsalvesLewis ThorpeNick GordonNick BurdiTyler DuffeyOswaldo ArciaMitch GarverJR MurphyTrevor MayTyler JayI debated on guys like Chargois, Reed, Meyer, based on upside, but given the unknowns with them, I'd be surprised if they'd get picked. I also considered Eddie Rosario, but after I gave it more thought I realized that while I like him and am glad he's on the team, I wouldn't be destroyed if he were moved.
  23. This is pretty obviously a sign of fear and desperation by the Sox. I mean, one obviously doesn't just sit back and not respond to Trader Terry's big move of bringing back Darin Mastroianni.
