  1. Don't get me wrong, I hope Tyler becomes the next Billy Wagner, and he, Burdi, Chargois and Reed have to have a Royal Rumble-style contest every game to see who gets to come in and strike out the side to secure another win. I just wish he didn't have to come to it by way of an early draft pick.
  2. Goodrum has piqued my interest a bit. He looked a lot stronger than I expected. Glad to see he performed well.
  3. The point isn't that it's not a nice piece to have, but not with the 6th pick in the draft. That's where you should be finding your heart of the order and top of the rotation, not a new version of Norm Charlton.
  4. Was he really that guy though? I honestly don't remember him being thought of as a steal at #6. I seem to recall him being rated in the mid-teens, behind a few guys that went after him. Followup question: how often does a a college reliever become a frontline rotation piece? Common or a longshot?
  5. Really disappointing to have a guy drafted that early moved to the pen so early in his career. Definitely makes that pick look a whole lot worse. On the bright side, it would now be plausible to have 4 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year winners in the bullpen by season's end - Jay, Perkins, Slegers, and Wimmers. It's always great news when three first round picks end up being bullpen arms. Might as well try to pry Cory Luebke from the Sox and really go for it.
  6. If they do indeed add 4 of those 5, I'd like to retract my statement about 70-75 wins ... it'll be much, much lower.
  7. I'm with Rosterman. With that rotation, bullpen and bench, this team is destined for 70-75 wins.
  8. I've been predicting it since they signed him. I'm guessing he has an opt-out, and no matter how below average the veteran is, the Twins seem to fear losing that veteran more than anything else. I can't imagine a worse scenario than going a rotation featuring Hughes, Santiago, Vogelsong and every other start Gibson. Yikes.
  9. My gag-inducing best guess is Vogelsong is the leading candidate for the spot. I told a friend when they signed him that I expected him to win the #5 spot ... because it seems "veteran presence" trumps "ability" and "talent" with Molitor and, at least it appears so far, the new front office.
  10. While Romero is obviously the one I'm most intrigued with, I still can't seem to quit the idea of Kohl Stewart. Obviously, the walks need to come down and the K/9 rate at Chattanooga wasn't good, but his repeat at Ft. Myers yielded better K numbers than upon his initial promotion. I'm hoping that trend repeats this year. I look at the steady numbers, the ridiculous lack of HRs allowed and can't help but wonder what could be if he turns even one of those BB/9 into an additional K/9. I'm stubborn and holding out hope until all the hope is gone ... just like I did with Real Deal Durbin.
  11. I'm excited to see what the kid's got. If they can get Graham or Pressly-like results out of him, and it keeps higher upside guys like Mejia, Berrios, May, Gonsalves, etc. out of that spot, it's a win. I'm more interested in seeing if a young guy that could be around more than a year can do the job rather than a retread like Vogelsong. If this year is that of a mop-up role, so be it. Having 4 starters - assuming the starting 5 is what Tom suggested - that throw lots of pitches, but not many innings should allow him plenty of opportunities to develop. The one drawback I see is that with the amount of innings I see that swing guy having to throw, he could get overused and become less effective. It could be a revolving door out of necessity in that role this year.
  12. “Working with Doug Mientkiewicz last summer really did me well,” Seems to be a pretty common theme. Better to keep him with the young kids or with the slightly older kids as a hitting/bench coach/manager in waiting?
  13. I never thought I'd say this, but if Stubbs, Paulsen and Shuck are competing with Santana, I'm cheering for Santana. If we're talking about low upside players, I'll take the youngest one and roll the dice.
  14. Some interesting pieces on here. Probably nothing to start a countdown clock on (although I'd love it if this new arm slot restarts "Burdi Watch"), but could all be solid contributors at some point.
  15. No worries ... Rob's got that spot on lock down. If he hits .642 against lefties it might almost make up for his "defense." (Having been in attendance for the 2-error play, I feel it my right to rip on his defensive prowess at any given moment.)
  16. If it did, I wouldn't mind. But given Robbie's defensive shortcomings (understatement of the century), I think they'll continue to view DanSan as a viable 4th OF. Light I'm not concerned about too much either way. But if the endgame is taking the Santana tool from Molly's belt, they need to just go ahead and do it. Unless the plan is to have Escobar spend more time in the OF, too.
  17. I give Rob zero credits. He started out hot and coasted the rest of the way to mediocrity. And he has to be handcuffed to someone who can play defense, because he certainly can't. Maybe this guy and ole Rob can count as one spot.
  18. I think I'd take this guy over Napoli. Talk about a nightmare scenario. Could they keep him and Grossman given neither of them should even be allowed to own gloves? lol There has to be someone who can hit their body weight and not be a complete embarrassment in the field. Happy medium.
  19. Unless the point is to try to DFA and try to sneak him to Rochester, I don't get it. Yes, it's important to have a bench that can play some defense, but you have to have something that can pinch hit if needed. A bench of Grossman, Escobar, Adrianza/Santana and Gimenez/Murphy is dreadful.
  20. Aw, Dan San and his amusing job security. I guess it was just wishful thinking. But I'll stick with my gut and say Tonkin.
  21. The only others that could be debated would Dan San and Rosario. Maybe I'm missing someone.
  22. So, what was your favorite Michael Tonkin moment? Or who else would they consider dropping?
  23. He's a gamer? Do we still say that as a compliment or is that gone with the old regime?
