  1. In his last 20 starts, Ervin Santana has a 2.23 ERA. If he keeps it up until the trade deadline, I wonder what a contender would be willing to give up to have him.
  2. I like the team, and I'm excited about the season. We're 0-0 right now. Undefeated, baby! Buxton, Sano, Rosario, Kepler, and Polanco are that Puckett/Hrbek/Gaetti/Brunansky/Gagne core that's going eventually bring home a championship. They're all going to exceed expectations in 2017. E. Santana is going to be that solid sub-3.50 ERA guy we need to lead the rotation. Gibson is going to finally have his breakout year. Mejia has played his last game in AAA, and Berrios isn't far behind. Duffey, Pressly, and Rogers are all going to be beasts in the bullpen. Dozier will be an All-Star, and we're all going to complain that he wasn't voted in as a starter. Mauer and Grossman will both be on-base machines. Park is going to play like a man who has something to prove. After he has his cup o' coffee in Rochester, he's going to be a middle-of-the-order monster for us. Optimism, guys. Optimism! Get ready, Royals. In four days, your savage beatdown is coming.
  3. Yeah, there's definitely a lot of grey area when it comes to all these unwritten rules. I do think the game has become less dogmatic about all these behavioral "rules" and the consequences for breaking them, which I think is a positive. Embracing emotion and prioritizing respect for your opponent can (and should) coexist in the game. The game seems to be gravitating towards that happy balance.
  4. Wait, who's advocating that no emotion be shown? It certainly wasn't Kinsler (or anybody that I know of). I think if you asked an "old school" player their views on expressing emotion on the field, they'd more than likely say showing your emotions is fine, provided it is proportional to the moment at hand. Win the World Series with a walk-off homer? Go crazy. Jaw at the opposing team's dugout because you're dominating them (ala Stroman last night)? Probably going too far. Do a cart wheel because you caught the 2nd out of the top of the 3rd inning? You need a sedative. I really reject the idea that "act like you've been there before" = emotion-repressing robot, just as I reject that pumping your fist in the air after you get a big hit = disrespectful showboat. Both ways of thinking are just two sides of the same simple-minded coin, in my opinion.
  5. "Unemotional robots" certainly implies you think he's wrong. It's a pretty blatant put-down.
  6. Unemotional robots? By saying that, aren't you basically doing what you're accusing Kinsler of doing - just in the opposite direction? There's no need to belittle those who may live/work/play in a different way. To each his own, right?
  7. Felix Hernandez has been the leader of a lot of bad Mariners teams. They were bad because: ( A ) He's a selfish player ( B ) He couldn't inspire his teammates to win ( C ) The teams were just plain terrible and there was really nothing he could do about it ( C ) is probably the correct answer... although if the Mariners, after their 101-loss season in 2010, decided to blame their "bad leader" for it and wished to dump him onto some other team (like, say, the Twins), I wouldn't have talked them out of it.
  8. I will never forgive Dozier for leading the Twins pitching staff to that 5.08 ERA. Crappy leadership, Brian.
  9. I have nothing to back up this theory, but I think I've heard Dozier be described as a "mistake" hitter. I wonder if he sees more "mistake" pitches hitting at the very top of the order (where there's often nobody on base). That would explain why he hits so many solo home runs.
  10. That isn't evidence of anything other than he loves to hit in the leadoff spot and likes to "get things going." Labeling him a selfish player just based on that is pretty unfair.
  11. Wait, where in Dozier's history does it suggest at all that he would insist where he bats in the lineup? What evidence is there that he is a "pain in the neck" or a selfish player?
  12. Can anybody get a read on what this front office thinks of Kennys Vargas? I thought the Park DFA at least partially meant that they liked Vargas and were ready to roll with him as the primary DH. It doesn't look that way right now.
  13. 1. Santana 2. Santiago 3. Gibson 4. May 5. Hughes? Berrios? Mejia?
  14. Damn you, Rachel Phelps. http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x318/Chamby_X/411%20-%20Major/phelps.jpg
  15. Cleveland just absolutely refused to let their injuries slow them down. Hopefully, the Vikings are the Indians of the NFL this season.
  16. Big respect for the Cleveland Indians.
  17. There have been stories told of his mullet once healing a leper. It was an astonishing mullet.
  18. I'm stunned. What a punch in the gut.
  19. How did we ever win seven?
  20. And he announced his presence with authority, thank you very much.
  21. Byron! We are going to win a baseball game tonight!
