  1. I will be watching New Hampshire and Pennsylvania -- if these break for Romney then I think that Obama will be in trouble. Whoever wins, we need some breakthroughs. The Dems need to compromise as to some programs that are vital to the average person, and the Republicans need to allow some tax increases on people making more than $X per year. But I am pessimistic about achieving needed cuts in the defense budget no matter who wins. Unless there can be fundamental changes in the system, we will continue to have a corrupt and unproductive Congress and a President who must tiptoe around powerful special interests ranging from the NRA to the ACLU to Wall Street and beyond.
  2. I hope that TR does not trade him while his stock is so low.
  3. Your plan is thought provoking, and you don't deserve to get flamed just because Haren got traded.
  4. I hope for the best for Casilla. But if he hits .290 or better next year, then I will be hoping that the Twins get a new pitching coach.
  5. Pavano might make a comeback. He has done that before. But I agree that the Twins should pass, unless he can show that his velocity has recovered.
  6. I agree. That's why I cannot stand the extremism of both sides. Either all in or all out. I agree with both of you. President Eisenhower was correct when he warned everyone to beware of the military-industrial complex.
  7. Thanks for the concern I am alright (as John B said). Not much more than a phone these days (charged by my car charger) to connect to the 'net. Lehigh Valley kinda mess these days and have been working with folks and chainsaws to clear roads and stuff. Not too much water like NJ and NY and DE, but lots of trees and power lines down and the such and lots of folks who need help. So that's why I have not responded at this. Now I got a WiFi connection nearby, so here we go. I still stand by the original post. Did not find more details (hey, got other priorities right now, sorry) but I do stand by it. Baker is a Twin with a 3 year total contact including incentives and options (and I do not know how many incentives and/or options). We will find out the details soon. I am glad that you are OK and hoping that you are correct about Baker.
  8. So first to back up your point you make an assumption that is extremely favorable to your viewpoint? Cmon. The Rays have never acted in a way that is restricted by such limited, conventional thinking. They won't be taken to the woodshed in a Span deal because of some perceived "need" for a certain type of player at one position. Leadoff hitters don't have to play CF - they can address their OBP needs in other ways without Span. Your entire premise in this thread is built on the idea that we have Tampa right where we want them. That's hardly the case. The deal makes some sense for both sides and is worth exploring, but it is a bit far fetched to think you'll land Shields for Span. Just as it is that you'll land a top SP prospect for him. with tampa looking to shed payroll and fill needs from excess same as the twins it looks like a good fit , we may have to throw in some non factors prospects like hernandez or hermsen but they aint going to help us so trade em Obviously, some GMs will value Span more than others. But the idea of trading Span for a solid starter who is affordable seems appealing, even if it's necessary to throw in a prospect or two to make the deal happen. I also like the idea of bidding high for Anibal Sanchez -- he seems like a solid #2 -- and taking him would might weaken the Tigers.
  9. I am glad for him and believe that he has the makings of an excellent manager.
  10. That makes sense to me, considering that the Twins will likely get outbid on the good starters who are free agents.
  11. He was clutch for the Tigers in the postseason, so I would guess that they may try to keep him. On the other hand, I don't see the Twins even considering him, because he was not clutch for them.
  12. This is an interesting discussion. I would hate to lose Morneau, but the Twins need pitching.
  13. I am loving this book. The information is interesting and the format is excellent. And I agree that the TR interview alone is worth more than the price of the book. One question -- is someone sending a copy to TR? I would like everyone in the front office to read this.
  14. You make an excellent point. It seems to me that the biggest welfare queens in the U.S. are Wall Street (hundreds of billions of dollars of bailouts) and the big corporations ((hundreds of billions of dollars of tax breaks). And without government funding, private enterprise never would have been able to develop computers or the internet.
  15. I am hoping that all 5 can happen.
  16. I recall reading somewhere that Greinke wants to play for a contender. But even if this is not true, I can't imagine the Twins bidding the kind of dollars and years that other teams will offer.
  17. It sure seems like the Tigers are doing a lot of things better than the Twins, especially in terms of starters. Also, Delmon Young was just named MVP of the AL Championship series against the Yankees, which suggests that the Twins were the whipping boy in that trade. I would love to hear some of the experts on TD analyze what the Twins might learn from the Tigers.
  18. I wonder whether an additional $1 million per year spent on better scouts and minor league coaching might eventually save $10 million on having to pick up free agents to cover holes in the lineup. If there were good pitching prospects coming up next year, then no one would be thinking much about Greinke and other mega-expensive free agents. The Twins pitching prospect list is weak, and it seems to me that this should be blamed on poor scouting and/or mistakes by the front office, and that the best way to spend more money may be on improving the selection of prospects.
  19. This is an interesting article. My sense is that Mauer would be reluctant to consent to the trade, because he would hate playing in a fishbowl like Boston where the press and the fans are very unforgiving. Other than playing for a team that is better equipped to contend, I don't see any incentive for Mauer to agree to this, and Boston had so many problems last year that its chances of contending anytime soon seem remote.
  20. Does anyone have any information regarding the velocity of his fastball in this AFL game?
  21. Soooo I'm guessing S&M is out of the conversation? *sad face* It sounds to me like he may be OK being the S but not the M. I wonder how upset he will be when he sees me on TV at an Angels game wearing a home made TD shirt.
  22. Maybe we should start a Southern California Twins club that goes to a game together when the Twins are in Anaheim? Usually there appear to be at least 1,000 Twins fans at Angels games -- I wonder how many of them have discovered TD. If we could get enough people, maybe we could get a skybox. Or maybe we could sit in regular seats and hand out cards with the url link to TD to other fans we see who are wearing blue and red. That reminds me -- when will we be able to order TD t-shirts? These would be cool to wear to games, and could have the url on the back. I moved out of SoCal four years ago. Nobody is allowed to form a Twins club in LA because if there wasn't one while I lived there, there shouldn't be one now. TD shirts will probably appear at some point but they're not really on anybody's radar right now. We have so much other stuff to deal with that peripheral stuff like shirts will be a long ways off. Look at the bright side -- if you ever move back to SoCal, you will have people who love what you have done for us and who will treat you to free tickets. As for the t-shirts, it might be fun to start a thread to gather ideas. And I suspect that we have some people here who could create some awesome original graphics. Wouldn't it be cool to be watching an away game in Anaheim (or anywhere else) and see your brethren in their TD shirts?

  24. Now that this season is over, I think that this is a good time to thank the founders and administrators of this website and everyone who has written articles and blogs. This was a tough season for us fans, but TD has made it a lot more bearable for me. I am very grateful for all of the hard work of those who have brightened my day every day, and I look forward to next season knowing that I am part of a group that includes some very talented, knowledgeable writers who will help make sense of whatever may happen.
