  1. Totally agree and times like that I tip my cap to the ACLU. If you want an example of when I have a problem: Boy Scouts. Now I deplore what the Boy Scouts do to homosexual boys as far as discrimination, but part of a free society is being able (to various degrees) to discriminate. As a private club, they have the right to make the guidelines of membership whatever they want. No matter how much we don't like that, it's an important line I don't want the government or anyone else crossing. Leviathan, I have great respect for your intelligence and reasoning, but I respectfully disagree. So long as the Boy Scouts are receiving tax-deductible contributions, it seems to me that they should not be allowed to discriminate against gays. When donors to the Boy Scouts take tax deductions, it effectively increases what other taxpayers must pay. In this way, the Boy Scouts are different from a private club, such as a country club. Members of country clubs don't get charitable deductions for supporting such clubs. But donors to the Boy Scouts are subsidized by other taxpayers. If the Boy Scouts want to stop sucking on the taxpayer teat by receiving tax deductible contributions, then I will not mind them discriminating. In the meantime, I resent indirectly subsidizing their discrimination.
  2. Your prediction turned out to be the most accurate of all. Nice work.
  3. Most of those things - ending discrimination, respecting the rights of same sex couples - fall under equal protection in our Constitution. Opposition to death penalty and prisoner rights are generally based on the 8th amendment, same with opposition to torture. Religious rights are in the first amendment. Abortion rights, like privacy and travel, are also found in the Constitution. The ACLU protects both civil liberties and civil rights. Civil liberties tend to be thought of as things listed in the bill of rights while civil rights tend to be thought of more as natural law and formulated in statutes. Amen to that. The common theme here is respecting the rights of others. I would add the First Amendment to what you have listed. Freedom of religion must include freedom from religion, and I abhor laws that effectively impose religious ideas on others. If not for religious notions, I think that gay marriage and other gay rights would have been recognized long ago. I think that a lot of Christians fail to appreciate that the First Amendment was intended to keep religion out of government. If someone believes that life begins at conception, then that is their right to believe that and to never have an abortion. But it is wrong to impose their view on some 17 year old woman who gets pregnant and does not want to have the baby. The same for gay rights.
  4. Should we be worried about the environmental impacts of fracking?
  5. I must be missing something. I have watched every episode and was sure that this was really the story of Maggie. [video=youtube;jVy_xFjzxs4]
  6. When I read Thrylos' original post I was skeptical. But even if I had believed what I said, I would not be very upset to learn that he was mistaken. We live in a difficult world, and being misled about Baker was not a big deal to me. And it seems to me that the TD leadership handled this with thoughtfulness and restraint. If they had erased the thread, then that would have bothered me. But the thread is still there for all to see, and Thrylos received a lot of criticism that is still there for people to read. This is my favorite Twins site and I am hopeful that we can all move on and have even more fun next year. I value everyone who posts here, whether I agree with them or not, and even if they disagree with me. We share a common bond that adds meaning to our lives, and when the Twins win, Thrylos will be our brother in celebrating the victory.
  7. I am too superstitious to name anyone in this thread.
  8. Since the Twins are unlikely to contend next year, I would hope that they start him in Rochester where there is a lot less pressure. If he can perform there, then maybe Deduno gets sent down.
  9. I sometimes think that the Twins scouts and minor league coaches may be below average. Lots of other teams seem to have better prospects in their systems, especially starting pitchers. And as others have noted, finishing last in the weakest division in baseball suggests that something is wrong. My questions: 1. How important is it to have above-average scouts and minor league coaches? (the poll question) 2. Is there any way that fans can discern whether a teams scouts and/or coaches are below average? (for extra credit)
  10. Per capita the Twins get very good ratings, so a new broadcast team wouldn't help. The problem is the market size is pretty damn small, compared to the majority of other teams, for instance Detroit territory has significantly more people. Yes Twins territory is large in size, but Iowa, South Dakota etc are very sparesly populated, and even Minneapolis pales compared to most other cities. Thanks for clearing this up for me.
  11. Another amazingly informative article from Parker. I love it when the pictures help bring home the analysis.
  12. Why are the Twins local TV revenues so low compared with the Tigers and a lot of other teams? Don't they have a fairly big territory? Would a better broadcast team help?
  13. I think that maybe the Cubs are planning to use Baker as trade bait near the trading deadline next year, assuming that he is likely to be pitching well by then.
  14. Here is an interesting article that speculates that the main reason for the Cubs to acquire Baker is to use him as trade bait, assuming that he pitches well. On reflection, this seems like a pretty good strategy.
  15. I agree with those who feel that the Twins should go young.
  16. I agree with this, except I think that it may take until 2016 for enough young pitchers to make it through the system to allow the Twins to compete. I suspect that the Twins will continue to shop the bargain bin of free agents and will need to get very lucky to contend anytime soon.
  17. I would have thought that the correlation between regular season wins and postseason success would have been a lot higher. As a Twins fan, I am used to not going far in the playoffs. I wish that someone would figure out how the Twins could squeak into the playoffs then go to the World Series instead of getting swept by the Yankees in the first round.
  18. Or they can develop prospects and trade for more prospects and make us wait a few years before they become competitive.
  19. I agree. The biggest need by far is pitching. Any trades should focus on that.
  20. I agree with you. The Twins have too many promising outfield prospects who would be blocked by Hunter. Also, Hunter will be expensive.
  21. I see no reason not to move him up to Ft. Meyers is he does well at Cedar Rapids.
  22. Anyone who does not buy the book is missing out on a fun bargain.
  23. I am glad that Obama has won, and will be praying that he and the Republicans can now find common ground before we go off the fiscal cliff.
  24. I wouldn't exactly call the ACLU a special interest group unless defending people's Constitutional rights and freedoms is a special interest. FYI, I was trying to be balanced. I have been a member of the ACLU for many years and send them a fair amount of money. I agree with you that the ACLU should not be considered a special interest, but suspect that many of my Republican friends might disagree.
