  1. It is really easy to be critical in the MLB draft. You are almost certain to be proven correct. Look at all of the number 43 picks. 43rd Picks Overall in the MLB June Amateur Draft - Baseball-Reference.com One guy has above 20 WAR. Bob Knepper. One guy has 10 WAR. Scott Hatteberg. The third best guy with 3.3 WAR is Wade Miley. No one else has done anything. Taijuan Walker look promising though. Knepper and Miley. Both lefties. Good control. Note: You will see Mark Prior in the list. He didn't sign. Everyone knew he wouldn't sign. Not even Yankee money could get him to sign. He isn't pick 43 talent.
  2. Greatest risk. Greatest upside. Given how difficult it is to find a top of the rotation upside, I can't argue with the decision. Let's hope he signs and shows enough this year that we see him in Cedar Rapids next spring.
  3. I wonder what percent is internationally signed players.
  4. Bryant would be a very good addition. The Twins can never have enough power hitters. Willingham, Doumit and Morneau will be gone by 2015 or earlier. Plouffe and Parmelee may play themselves out of a job. Sano and Arcia can't replace all 5 guys.
  5. i can't. All I have is stats in a sample not large enough to distinguish any of the three. I would think much more weight might come from seeing them play. I assume all three play left field. If any play a more difficult defensive position that should sway it in their favor. I guess observation of their defense should also be a factor.
  6. A bust doesn't necessarily make it a bad pick.so e of the busts referred to above we're not bad picks. Pitchers carry more risk. High schoolers carry more risk and promise more reward. Drafting a high school pitcher is the ultimate of risk. Kohl Stewart is a good draft pick in the Twins spot this year. He may be a bust. He may be an allstar. In either case the decision to risk selecting him will have been a good one. Top of the rotation pitchers are the rarest commodity.
  7. I am not trying to predict what the Twins will do. I am suggesting that if they believe he has a future role on the major league club they must move him to a more difficult level. There are no 23 year old prospects in low A-Ball. There is an interesting split that baseball reference keeps. Under the splits option, you will see how many plate appearances came against older or younger pitchers. Look at Hicks' numbers. Not very exciting. I think that split will say more about upside in the minors than any other. If you are consistently batting against an older pitcher 80+% of the time, you will grow as you catch up through the minors. Berrios is interesting. He has yet to face a batter younger than him. Note: Greg Dobbs is a regular 1B for Miami this year and played Low A at 23. He was advanced to AA in that same year. He made it as a part time regular 28 and has a career OPS of .698.
  8. Is Dalton Hicks a prospect? Probably not. However, at 23 he needs to move if he has any chance to progress to the majors. We don't have a 1B prospect in AA. How about shifting Hicks and Vargas or maybe just Hicks? He is older than Vargas. Is Rory Rhodes in extended spring training? He could take Hicks' spot. If he is not a prospect, it doesn't matter what the Twins do as long as he isn't blocking someone who is a prospect.
  9. I suppose a good list. However, there is a huge difference between the top few picks and the 21st pick. In the 42 years from 1965-2007, there are only 6 guys that have over 10 career WAR. I guess the rest are some level of bust but it is typical at pick 21. If Buxton doesn't make it, that will be a bust. If one of Wimmers, Michael, Berrios or Gibson make it, you are probably ahead of the game.
  10. Rosario does have the best line drive percentage on the team at 22.4% to fuel his BABIP.
  11. My last on moving them up... I went through catchers with significant playing time this year. All but one were in AA by 23 and AAA by 24. Most were earlier. That left AJ Ellis who reached AA at 25 and the majors at 27. He became a starter at 31. Given their placement in the organization, the Twins must view Pinto as a marginal prospect and Koch as an organizational catcher.
  12. The Twins have plenty of organizational catchers to slide around. There isn't a prospect currently in Rochester. I do think it is more important to move Pinto at 24 than Koch. Even if Herrman returns, his ability to play OF will give him enough paying time. Pinto can DH once a series and get enough time behind the plate. If Koch is seen as a prospect, he really needs to move. Does anyone know about his defensive ability?
  13. By age, anyone 23 really needs to be in AA to be on track. Catchers can move slower, but Koch is 24. The Twins should move Koch and push Pinto to AAA. Morales is 23. Rodgers is 25. Seems like they chose the wrong Rogers. By need and performance, the Twins should move Rosario and get his feet wet in AA. When will he need to be on the 40? Baxendale is already up. Sano is a given. Once in AA, players are knocking at the door. Arcia was in Fort Myers at this time last year.
  14. They would still be able to remove him from their 40. For example, once the Blue Jays took Burnett off their roster he is returned to Minnesota off the 40. A provision should probably be included for any other team making an original claim where they would have a chance to use the claim and put him on their 40 before he is returned to Minnesota. Two benefits... -Burnett does not spend more than 1 period waiting out the DFA process. -The Blue Jays or any team can't game the system making several claims only to release the player and hope no one follows with a claim. In any case, something should be done to make sure players aren't losing 2 months of a key year. The Twins added Florimon to the organization this way claiming him and designating him. The difference was that it was during the offseason and Florimon did not miss any time.
  15. Is it possible that Houston will be more likely to draft him? He must know that this could effect his slot. Would that make him more willing to take below slot money? Houston might be able to get him to accept a contract slotted for picks 4 or 5 and draft him number 1.
  16. We agree on his talent. His situation is due to a rule that can be changed. The MLBPA needs to take care of the large number of people in its organization that have marginal talent.
  17. You realize that he spent only a handful of days in the majors. Most of this season has been in those other cities you mentioned or in designated limbo. There is any easy fix. Allow players to be designated once during the regular season. After that treat it like a returned rule 5 player or free agency.
  18. I have a harder time following baseball without caring about the people that play the game I enjoy so much. Designated for Assignment: The Rough Road of Alex Burnett - Twinkie Town
  19. You realize that everytime he is designated he is in limbo for 10 days and then transitions his new team. He has pitched 14 innings for 4 teams and is currently in limbo again. That's 4 big league teams and 2 minor league stops and many days in designated limbo. Even if you don't care how difficult it is personally to move that many times, he really hasn't had a chance to begin his 2013 season. Teams do this to try to add organizational depth. They do so planning to designate the player and add him to their minor leagues. They hope he will clear waivers with them, if not they lose a few dollars in claim money. There is a simple fix. The rule should be that teams claiming a player on waivers must do so knowing that they have to keep the player on the 40 man roster the rest of the season. If at any time they need to take the player off the 40, the player becomes a minor league free agent free to sign with any team. If this were the rule, teams would be more careful about making a claim and only claim those players with a real shot at staying on the 40. It would not be possible for a player like Burnett to lose a third or more of a season at a key age in their career. If you still believe that Burnett is not a loser in all this, I welcome your argument.
  20. He could be the third 25 year old lost this year. We have already lost Burnett and Benson. Building teams usually try to retain their younger players at the expense of older journeymen. Burnett looks like the ultimate replacement level player as he has gone from Twins to Blue Jays to Orioles to Cubs (who have recently designated him). The loser in all this is Burnett. Baseball and the MLBPA need to fix this.
  21. As I read I wonder... Is Arcia healthy enough to play in the field? Can Butera be dropped from the 40 while injured? Last year the Yankees put Betances on the 60 day DL while in the minors (technically they called him up and moved him to the 60). Is that an option for Butera? Who is the better defender... Richardson or Thomas? If they have to make a 40 move, I would rather have the defender. If the stay on the team is short term, does it make sense to mess with the 40? Was Colabello's performance worth losing Benson? I know the switch was not one for one but it had to be projected given the moves were in the same week.
  22. I look forward to seeing how Pinto and Herrmann measure up receiving the ball.
  23. Park factor trends after 54 games... 2013 1.055 (11th) 2012 1.044 (10th) 2011 0.944 (21st) 2010 0.962 (19th) Do we still think Target Field is a pitcher's park?
  24. After 54 games... team OPS+ is 93 (2012 was 98) team ERA+ is 94 (2012 was 85) Maybe Gibson and Arcia can help boost those numbers a little in then next 54.
