  1. I hope not. An extra day happens all the time.
  2. Nice study. There must be teams that have lower than normal strikeouts and lower than normal hits. What is the key? Groundball/Flyball rate? Low line drive percentage? Good defense? All around? Up the middle? IF? OF? Pitch framing? I think everyone is concerned with the Twins outfield defense. There is great debate on how to measure defense and how much impact according to runs to attribute to defense. How many extra hits and therefore runs will the OF defense give up this year? No one knows. I do know that the pitchers will get the blame.
  3. Gibson had trouble with the strike zone today in his poor start. As was written by some in other threads, it is hard to explain why Glynn would risk a high pitch count with him. Could it have set him back today?
  4. Colabello played in the outfield today. Is Rochester short or are they trying to see if he can play corner of adequately. I am aware that Thomas is injured.
  5. What typically happens with walk rate as pitchers progress through the minors? I am not sure. I did check Samardzija and Lynn. Both of them had significantly higher walk rates in AA and AAA. Lynn did not pitch very much below AA though. Lets hope Meyer stays at 3.
  6. I think it is only important in that it the strike out rate may increase as he moves to AA and may slow his arrival. Thome and Cabrera are worthy of comparing. They were both a year younger when they hit High A. K-Rates for each in High A Sano 37/139 (26.6%) Thome 26/143 (18.2%) Cabrera 85/545 (15.6%) K-Rates in minors Sano 26.0% Thome 17.7% Cabrera 16.4% You are correct. Sano is ahead. I assumed you meant the other way. His strike out rate is 58% greater than Cabrera in the minors.
  7. The Twins should not be concerned with service time and Meyer. He is already 23 years old. Pitchers do not have the same reliable growth path as a batter where you might trade some of his 24 year old season for the 31 year old season. Chances are much greater for a pitcher that an injury will occur in that 7 years and the 31 year old season isn't that valuable. The only thing that matters is figuring out the best route towards developing the talent of this hard throwing pitcher that has difficulty with control. There are some similar pitchers have started their major league careers in the bullpen.
  8. I hope we see Meyer in the 2014 rotation. If not, I wonder if a role in the pen to begin his major league career will be as beneficial as 2014 time in AAA as a starter. Maybe that is a role that can begin this August or September. The Twins acquired to big arms this winter. What is the best path in developing their talent?
  9. Great show this week! Thanks.
  10. The "Talk to Contact" podcast this week had a great guest in Jason Parks from Baseball Prospectus. Jason spoke about several Twin prospects including Meyer and May. He sees Meyer as a valuable late inning reliever and May at the back end of the rotation. It caused me to wonder if the Twins should consider giving them a role in the pen as we get to the last third of the season. It used to be more common that pitchers would start with a role in the bullpen as they began their major league career. Doing so would give them exposure to major league hitters. It would reduce their overall innings this year. It would come after any service time or super two considerations came into play. Pitchers have different career paths than hitters. Injury is always looming and projecting out 5-7 years is much more difficult. It might be wise to find a way to give them the best chance of pitching successfully in the majors next year. Would a call up and role in the pen for 1/3 the season help them progress toward being a valuable major leaguer?
  11. Good point. I was really thinking about what the Twins had in mind for 2013. If they get a half season in AA and find success, they will be knocking on the door next year. There are some other differences. Arcia was on the 40 this year. Arcia will have been older than Sano. I also think Sano's strike out rate might make for more struggle in AA.
  12. Last year at this time Oswaldo Arcia was playing in Fort Myers. He moved up to AA after the FSL All Star game on June 17. I think Arcia's move was part of a plan and not one of necessity. I can't find reference to an injury need. Is this the direction the Twins will follow with Sano and Rosario? I hope they continue to dominate the FSL the next month and get that opportunity. Once in New Britain they are knocking on the door and it is easier to envision them in Minnesota a year from now. What about Buxton? Might he move to High A in a similar time frame? Sano and Rosario didn't last year but Sano had endured a long slump and Rosario was injured. If Buxton dominates let's hope he moves up a spot also. Five more weeks to dominate their level. Let's hope they keep it up and move one step closer to Target Field.
  13. I think he should be called up because I think he is one of the Twins best 5 starters. He is already past the point where he will get a full year of service for this season. Are you suggesting the Twins wait until May 2014 to get an additional year? He is already under control into his 30s. I would give him some extra rest following his high pitch count start earlier this week. What was Glynn thinking leaving him in there? Maybe there isn't an inning limit plan and worry about his arm. If there is, can the Twins trust Glynn to keep his pitch count and innings down?
  14. Over/under on when he is ready to player regularly again? Really, there are few options to call up that would make a difference. They don't need a middle infielder with both Carroll and Escobar on the roster. On the 40 man the choices are few... Herrmann? Robertson? Gibson (Hernandez to pen)? Benson? Pinto? If his injury isn't long term it probably doesn't make sense to mess with the 40 on Colabello or Thomas. If those guys come up, the Twins need to believe they are there or the long haul. With so few options, I wouldn't blame the Twins if they wait and see how he is doing early next week.
  15. Would it be wise to give him an extra day or two following the long outing?
  16. Nice report. I hope they get to see Pinto or Herrmann in a long enough stretch this year so the Twins can determine if either has the defense to be a viable back up catcher for 2014. I am not sure that the Twins can get back anything more valuable than what Doumit can provide with the bat in 2014 so he may not be an asset on the trade market. If not, he would have value as a switch hitting DH/bench bat/emergency catcher on next year's roster.

  18. The Twins don't have better options for a second catcher. Doumit has to catch someone. I'd rather it be Correia than a young pitcher.
  19. I read the same link. While the title refers to the weekly update from baseball prospectus, it is clear the data in the league leader table is for the season. It is also easy to see the numbers are too high for a week.
  20. Did you see him play? I was a kid and my memory is a guy that was a good athlete with a very good arm. Injuries in the mid 60's shortened his career. By OPS+, he was probably the best hitter in the AL over the 1963-1964 seasons. He may not have been a great player for a long period but he was very good in the context of a decade with low offensive numbers throughout. Only three Twins have led the AL in OPS+ in a season, Mauer(2009), Carew(1977) and Allison(1963).
  21. Plouffe has a chance to be a good regular 3B. It is worth investing the games at 3B. He still has very little professional experience at the position. If he ranks 15th offensively at the end of the year that isn't given 30 teams. His age and point his career offer hope he will go up in rankings next year. As for fundamental mistakes, it does appear that the Twins have little patience with fundamental mistakes. Sometimes it seems like they would prefer players with no range or skill at the position as long as they don't make fundamental mistakes. On the other hand, it's the writers asking Gardenhire about the fundamental mistakes. Why ask everyday about the few of the chronically inept fielders they put out there? It wouldn't be news.
  22. If you are really interested, this article from 2010 is a place to start. To answer one of the questions, yes it does measure the 3 dimensional depth of the strike zone. http://baseball.physics.illinois.edu/FastPFXGuide.pdf
  23. I wonder if the pitchers do a better job. Correia is difficult to run against. Worley is difficult to run against. Hernandez was difficult to run against in the minors. Pavano is very easy to run against.
  24. A good list. Encouraging. Hicks is old for the level. Duffy and Melotakis need to be accelerated also. You hope at age 23 next year they start the season in AA or higher. I wonder about Polanco's position as he grows.
