  1. I own just one bobble head. It is a Jamey Carroll bobble head from the Harrisburg Senators. It may look more like a clean shaven Verlander than Carroll.
  2. Looking at brooks baseball, all of the missed strike calls were in the bottom of the strike zone last game. Hendriks threw seven pitches in the bottom quarter of the strike zone. 1 called strike 1 foul 1 swinging strike 4 balls If a pitcher can't get strike calls in the bottom if the zone, he has no choice but pitch up in the strike zone.
  3. Oops. Fixed. Thanks.
  4. The Deduno/Mauer connection was not a good one. Diamond was about the same. All of it is a small sample. While it may not be mathematically significant, it seems like Hendriks would have to be more confident with Mauer behind the plate where he has had most of his quality starts (Herrmann caught a quality start also). Correia was an all star in 2011. Doumit caught him more than any other catcher that year. Correia had a 3.99 ERA with Doumit and virtually the same with Snyder. Why not put Mauer at DH in Correia's starts? Why is Doumit behind the plate with the one pitcher who has never had success with him?
  5. Doumit has started one game at catcher this year. He caught Hendriks start. We can debate again whether Doumit's poor pitch framing performance over his entire career is an illusion or a real liability for a pitcher and team. Last year Mauer and Doumit each caught Hendriks 6 times. Mauer 6g, 37.1 inn, 3.86 ERA Doumit 6g, 28.1 inn, 7.94 ERA You have to believe he would have more confidence with Mauer even if it is an illusion. He has not had a single quality start with Doumit behind the plate. I sure hope it is Mauer behind the plate tomorrow. Why not have Doumit catch a veteran? Maybe Correia is more likely to shake off that missed strike call that is more frequent with Doumit. Doumit probably has some experience catching Correia in Pittsburgh. If he must go behind the plate, the Twins should keep him away from their young pitchers.
  6. How the end of the era for this infielder? Age 25 rookie 224/260/311 Age 26 155/184/206
  7. I don't think I would go get him. We need to develop younger pitchers. Not a soon to be 35 year old whose k-rate is dropping, walk rate increasing and hr rate too low to sustain. Last year his xFIP was 4.95. The solution to getting out of this hole is to invest innings into developing young pitching. Lots of innings were invested in Radke and Viola before they paid off.
  8. Mastroianni has been hurt. He would not have started this week. Clete Thomas or Joe Benson might be 0-22 with even more K's.
  9. Punto age 23 and entering age 24 as Escobar is this year. AAA 229/327/298 Carroll age 23 A+. 243/319/295 By 23, Escobar was in the majors. His 22 year old full season in AAA was 266/303/354. Punto and Carroll had the glove to give them time to improve their bat. I don't see anything in their record through age 23 indicating that they had a better chance to have a useful big league career than Escobar. If anything, Escobar playing at higher levels at younger ages should give him an edge.
  10. Escobar's youth gives him a little better chance to become an adequate hitter. His versatility and defensive ability give him a chance to have a Punto or Carroll type career. Coming up with the White Sox when he was primarily a SS, BBA ranked him as the White Sox best defensive middle infield prospect 4 years. The Twins did not play him regularly at SS starting only 10 of 36 games (at SS) after he arrived last year. They saw much more from Florimon at SS. In any case, his defensive ability across several positions should keep him in the majors into the next decade. Not an exciting or franchise changing player, but a useful major leaguer well worth what they lost in 12 Liriano starts.

    Opinion Versus Fact

I appreciate data, but realize that interpretation is opinion. One observation of the data thus far has been that the Twins have worked the pitch counts of opposing pitchers. They had 4 players last year that saw an above average pitches/plate appearance. Mauer - 4.31 Willingham - 4.20 Carroll - 4.07 Span - 3.89 Dozier saw 3.68 pitches per plate appearance. This year the team average is 4.25 in a few games. Last year was 3.88. I wonder if grouping at the top of the lineup several players who can work the count and see a lot of pitches will cause earlier exits of the opposing starting pitcher. Grouping them certainly will lead to higher pitch count innings. I am not sure what the data means to winning baseball games, but I am interested in following it this year.
  12. I should have been clearer. It based on reports from people watching him play. Those reports are what we have to look at. Data in a small sample should not be considered. He was in the Orioles top 30 in 2006, 2009, 2010. The reports describe his range, arm and inconsistency. John Sickels has written about him in his annual books. A link that can be read comes from 2010 about breakouts for that season has both he and Escobar. Possible Breakout Shortstops, Part One - Minor League Ball Scout.com has this 2007 report Scout.com: Prospect Countdown: #43 Pedro Florimon Here is a link from the Tenth Inning Stretch The tenth inning stretch: Who is the newest Twins' player Pedro Florimon Jr? In the 2008 Minor League Analyst from Baseball Info Solutions, Derek McKamey writes "Range and arm strength are defensive assets, but needs to cut down errors" Zachary Ball (an Orioles version of Seth Stohs" wrote this following the 2009 season Baltimore Orioles Top Prospect No. 14: Pedro Florimon Jr. | Bleacher Report The reports have been consistent about his defense since 2007. His arm and range are always listed as assets. His inconsistency is consistently listed as a deficiency.
  13. He has a good range. He has a good arm. Mixed with his inconsistent play, he is probably somewhere in the middle. Certainly, he is not near the bottom. If he had a bat, that would be OK.
  14. I am sure he can work on it. I don't get why it is still a problem after over 750 games in professional baseball as a shortstop. Reports of inconsistency have followed him through the minors.
  15. I am more hopeful that Escobar will grow offensively over the next few years. Florimon can get a longer chance. His bat will improve also. I am not hopeful that he can become more consistent defensively. While it is not unusual for a young player to improve consistency as they adjust to the speed of professional ball, they usually figure it out by AA and long before age 26.
  16. What is the definition of ready? How is it measured? Parmelee crushed AAA pitching last year. It doesn't mean he is ready to crush major league pitching.
  17. While Arcia projects to the better player, he has only played a half season above A-Ball. He will be able to develop in AAA for at least a half season. Once they bring him up whether it is July or next year, he needs to play everyday and be allowed to work through his struggles.
  18. The slash line for AL play in RF in 2012 259/323/418 The OPS is 740. Three teams had an OPS of 800 or better in the AL. The White Sox(850), Indians (804) and Angels (802). The Twins were at the bottom of the list. Is it enough to approach league average RF OPS this year knowing that he is very likely to grow over the following seasons?
  19. The Twins need to use this season to develop the pieces of their next team to win a playoff series. Both Parmelee and Arcia can be parts of that team. Parmelee's OPS of 1102 in AAA last year indicates that he is ready to struggle at this level. His development will not move forward in AAA this year. Assuming they want to start Arcia's service time clock and they decide that Arcia is ready to begin his struggle with major league pitching, it is time to reduce Doumit's role or trade Morneau. It doesn't have to be either Parmelee or Arcia.
  20. I hope the Twins are more patient than many on this board. Kubel's progression by OPS+ 72,110,115,137 Cuddyer 95,97,100,97,124 Parmelee's career OPS+ is 110. Last year it was 85. If the Twins are patient, they may get production like they saw from Cuddyer and Kubel in their 4th or 5th season as a ceiling. A Randy Bush type career is closer to the floor if they are patient.
  21. It was Escobar with the defensive reputation in the minors. I have not seen a report about his defense being unspectacular. BBA listed him as the White best defensive middle infield prospect 4 straight years. Florimon reports were of flash and inconsistency. There is a reason why he was DFA'd twice last year with all other team's passing.
  22. He has the defense. The Twins should expect for him to struggle offensively. A season similar to Torii Hunter's 23 year old season should be expected. Torii Hunter 255/309/380. Those number are in a season where run scoring was greater. Hunter's OPS+ his first fours seasons were 73,86,102,120. Will Twin fans be patient enough for Hicks to develop his bat? If he follows the same path, can Twin fans wait until 2015-16 before we see his peak production?
  23. I think he was pulled March 29. Plenty of time to arrange the Rochester rotation. Maybe Hernandez has been the plan. Your rationale makes sense. I would have appreciated a comment from Ryan indicating a plan rather than the one he gave to Mike Berardino.
  24. If they want to see if he can develop, he needs 1000 plate appearances.
