  1. If I recall he struggled for a stretch mid season. I think a terrible month of June losing his 8th inning role. Setup relievers have little trade value. Too many teams have one too offer. Struggling set up men are worth very little. I wouldn't think he was too tradable with the extra year of commitment an additional anchor.
  2. I linked this in the other thread but this is a better fit. The article was written after a strong 2012 season in fear that the a Twins would extend him through 2014. Set up relievers don't age well into their 30s. http://twinsdaily.com/entry.php/1968-Burton-What-s-is-the-Future-for-a-31-Year-Old-Set-Up-Man The Twins need to stop extending players into their 30s. Why fear arbitration? They have the money to pay should the player take a step and become among the better players. Extending middling players leaves no room for decline. They end up carrying mediocre players with no upside. Moves the a Twins could make this year to continue the cycle of mediocrity. They might extend Kubel or Suzuki or Correia when they should trade them. They might extend a Dozier into his 30s when they have several years of team control. They need to keep him hungry. They should happily pay his due reward in arbitration if he becomes an all star level player. The same goes for Plouffe.
  3. I thought the Twins made a mistake extending him. They had him under team control for 2013. http://twinsdaily.com/entry.php/1968-Burton-What-s-is-the-Future-for-a-31-Year-Old-Set-Up-Man Teams should use caution extending any one 32 and beyond. Too often they decline and stay on the roster while younger players are not given the opportunity to grow.
  4. He is most valuable as a center fielder or second baseman. I am not sure how his defense is at either, but his bat will play well there. Playing him in a corner combined with the suspension will drop his value to the team and other teams considerably. If he can play adequate 2B, they have some flexibility with Dozier either trading him or moving him to SS. While Dozier's metrics at SS were average, he didn't look that good. He also didn't look that good with the bat. That can happen in your first year. Some out there saw him at SS regularly in AA and might have insight whether he might be able to play adequately defensively. He had a lower than expected number of errors in the minors which might suggest good hands and feet. I think we saw that his arm was lacking which would limit the range.
  5. Nunez was used in RF today. I hope it is a sign the Twins view him as a utility player and not a regular shortstop. It may be a role he can play on a winning team.
  6. If the plan is for Nunez to start at SS, the Twins must know that he has significant work to do on the defensive end. It will take a lot of time and hard work on Nunez' part. He has a strong but inaccurate arm, poor hands and foot work. He tends to lose focus. These were the reports prior to him entering the majors. The hands and foot work can improve with hard work and playing time. It may not be enough to be adequate at SS. If the Twins intend to play him at SS, he needs 80-100 games in AAA to see if he can develop the defense.
  7. My old age or lack of intelligence probably keep me from getting the response. I hope the Twins are assessing how much replacing Florimon with Nunez will cost in runs defensively. There will be a cost. Is it 1 run every 4 games? 3 games? 10 games? They need to match that with the increase in runs as a result of the change in offense. If it is a wash, wouldn't it be better to go with the better defender? It will be a savings on the pitching staff and bullpen. I am not sure the answer is at the referenced site. I hope the Twins are getting better advice.
  8. Florimon's hitting matches Nunez' fielding. Is Nunez' hitting a match for Florimon's fielding?
  9. Both would be better defenders than Nunez. Here is an article written in 2011 about Nunez. It doesn't include any of the defensive metrics that suggest that he should never play SS. It was before he had the extended opportunity. Two quotes from the article... Since 2011 Nunez had more than enough chances to prove those GMs wrong. He didn't come close. He may be down to one team that believes he can be a major league shortstop. Let's hope that the Twins are just smarter than the 29 other organizations.
  10. When all healthy, there is one spot for Bartlett, Herrmann, Mastroianni or Fuld. Who fits best this year? Who helps the long term more? If Herrmann means more at bats for Pinto, he might be the way to go. They can still claim Fuld if he is not traded and then designate him when all are healthy if the timing looks like it will work out.
  11. After two games, I am concerned about Nolasco' s pitch usage. His pitch mix with the Dodgers was very different with much more use of the slider and less of the fastball variants. Liriani's pitch mix with the Pirates was also very different with a decrease in the fastball use. I hope they don't wait a few months before looking at what might be different.
  12. I don't see any reason to sign him long term. He is under team control into his decline. Worst case he is an all star and it costs the Twins in arbitration. That is the kind of worst case the a Twins need. Better to keep him hungry.
  13. While the trade is unlikely, Suzuki could be their best trade chip among players here for the short term. Let's hope he has some luck with BABIP and looks good through June.
  14. In Pelfrey's "good " stretch of 15 starts last year... 15 starts 4.39 ERA 82 inn 90 hits 32 walks 63 k's Innings eater? Only 1 of the 15 starts was 7 innings. He did get an out in the 8th inning of any start in his good stretch. It is really hard to be an inning eater when you carry his pitch/plate appearance rate. FIP? K/BB ratio was 2.74 with the bases empty vs. 1.27 with runners on base. That is consistent with his career numbers. Correspondingly OPS against is 61 points worse with runners on base. FIP is based in strikeouts, walks and hime runs. Pitchers whose performance drops with runners on base will have FIPs that are lower than the rates in which they give up runs. If the hope is that he can pitch like he did the second half, expect a mid 4 ERA in starts shorter than 7 innings. At best a number 4 starter. If the hope is that he will be an innings eating starter with ERAs to match his FIP, I don't think that is realistic.
  15. He was DFA'd. The Yankees had a 10 day window to trade him. He is a better hitter than Triunfel and there was a reasonable chance that someone like the White Sox or Astros would have put in a claim since he did not have to go one the 25 man roster.
  16. The Twins need to continue to give Santana the regular play at SS in AAA. Nunez needs to get time at several positions including around the outfield. He is not a solution as a regular SS. It will take a lot more than Sulbaran to get a SS.
  17. They really don't have any older players that have significant trade value. Good starting pitchers or players up the middle have the value. Suzuki may be the best trade piece. Someone is going to need a catcher and they are in short supply. It is easy to gauge the return. He has been traded each of the last two years. Relievers and aging corner players don't get a return of significant prospects. Expect something along the lines of two C prospects or older fallen prospects.
  18. Reasonable pick up. Most players hit better from 26-30 than they do from 22-25 so he can grow into a good utility hitter. Yankees saw a better future in the marginal guys they kept. He is at a crossroads and fighting for a major league career. Looks like his future is as a utility man. Give him a long stay in AAA playing several positions and see if he wants to work his tail off to get back on track.
  19. They need to be looking long term at any point. Buy young. Sell old. Turn Around this roster that is among the oldest in Twins history.
  20. The unknown is how much Florimon's good defense saves runs. Is it one run every 10 games? Every 4 games? We know it is something. ZIPS projects Drew for 49 RC+ in 458 PA. The Florimon update has 40 in 502 PA. I think that makes a difference of about 1 run every 9 games. Other projections favor Drew more so maybe it is 1 in 6 games. It is hard to imagine Florimon's defense saves 1 run in 6 games over Drew, but it is something. It won't be too many years before the value of defense on saving runs will be better quantified. Until then it is hard to appreciate a very good defensive player batting in the 9 hole.
  21. My impressions... Good at bats. Plouffe and Colabello seem to be taking much better at bats this year. Lots of walks. Knocked out Masterson in less than 4 innings. Fien, Burton and Perkins did well. Some key double plays. Going home following a .500 road trip. Took a road series from a playoff team. I enjoyed the the first week. Good to have baseball back.
  22. Maybe Bartlett is injured from previous at bat. By all accounts he is a good man. I don't wish an injury on him. It isn't his fault the Twins rostered him. If he is injured and day to day, it will give an easier opening towards a roster decision. No reason to wait to see if the 25th man on the roster can recover in a few days.
  23. Swarzak looks like a guy who led the league in relief innings last year. They don't always follow up with another good year. http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/baseball/flb/story?id=2848091
  24. He is not in the Rochester line up. Injured? On a plane to Minnesota? Not one of the best 9 Red Wings?
  25. Bartlett would have to hit far better than his career numbers to make up for the fielding deficit created by replacing Florimon. Is there any reason to believe that he will hit that well? By removing Florimon the Twins remove their best defensive player from a poor defensive line up. The only other player who is certain to be average or better is Dozier. Hopefully Hicks will join them. Mauer? No one else is close to average.
