1. OK. I thought he was looking for replacement level. I don't think we could get him for a reliever. The Cardinals aren't dumping him. Center fielders are to difficult to find. Trevor May possibly. Would you do the deal?
2. I did read about his benching after a poor April, but his strong May numbers have him at his career OBP of .306. I think the Cardinals have the player they expected. Good defense. Weak bat. His defense will make him a valuable bench OF when Taveras arrives. Unfortunately, I don't think the Cardinals will be looking to designate him for assignment or dump him in trade.
3. He will earn his contract as a mid rotation starter for the duration. He needs to get to that bar.
4. If Herrmann has a major league career, it will be in a utility role. That might include some time in CF. Sometimes I miss the sarcasm, but I don't think anyone was shocked by the moves today or Gardenhire's comments about CF. They finally figured out that it might be worthwhile to get utility players AAA experience around the OF rather than learn it at the major league level.
5. You can have too many mediocre pitchers in decline.
6. It was foolish to extend him into this season prior to 2013. They had him under team control through last year. They don't need to extend him.
7. The Twins OF defense was league bottom last year and worse this year. Buxton and Rosario will eventually help. It needs to become a priority. It would also help if Nolasco increased his strikeout rate. A drop is expected moving to the AL, but not 19.8% to 15.2%
8. Ricky Nolasco was a very effective pitcher for the Dodgers last year. What happened? Is it his pitch mix? Is there something mechanical that has made his slider less effective? The following article looks at how pitching backwards helped Nolasco in 2013 (particularly with the Dodgers) http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2013/9/3/4676078/the-reemergence-of-ricky-nolasco He is using his four seam fastball more often with the Twins than he has in the previous two years. His fastball has never been an effective pitch. Parker wrote about Suzuki's high rate of calling for the fastball in March http://twinsdaily.com/content.php/2793-Twins-Looking-for-Leadership-Out-of-Suzuki The Twins need to take a close look at what made Nolasco an effective pitcher last season - particularly with the Dodgers. He has increased his slider usage this month, but it has not been as effective. He needs to find that 2013 slider and use it often.
9. Mauer, Suzuki, Pinto, Willingham, Arcia, Kubel, Parmelee Two guys need to sit. Pinto and Arcia need to play. Arcia nearly every day. Pinto at least 2 starts in 3.
10. I would hope the a Twins aren't making decisions based on one game. Right field is so large and difficult to play in San Francisco. They can't possibly consider playing Colabello out there. He would have to be at 1B.
11. Assuming Willingham is going to play most games, it is hard to see how the left handed batting Arcia, Kubel and Parmelee can be utilized well in RF/DH. Pinto needs to capture some of that DH time. Kubel or Parmelee? Who helps more? It was the same question at the end of spring training. Is the answer the same two months later?
12. I might be overestimating his trade value. Given his position, experience and performance, I think he is the most valuable (and possibly only valuable) trade chip the Twins have to play. I really hope that they will not extend him until after the trade deadline. Even after the deadline they need to go year to year. They don't need to dump him, but they need to seek a trade partner. Catchers are in short supply at the deadline.
13. With the day off yesterday and Thursday the could have skipped Correia's start and put him in the pen. He needs to step up.
14. The Twins or Twins Daily? The thread was prompted by a Darren Wolfson tweet. He must be considering it. Two years ago the Twins extended Ryan Doumit in June.
15. I don't think anyone called him anything but a prospect. He appeared in the top 100 list and I believe was as high as the number 2 Phillie prospect. Starting pitching prospects are difficult to acquire and a risk that they will ever reach their potential.
16. The Twins took the risk side, but it is very hard to acquire starting pitching prospects. The prospect side is going to lose more often than win. However, winning by finding a starting pitcher is the bigger pay off. Given another similar opportunity, they need to pull the trigger again.
17. Twins moved to 12 pitchers today. Hopefully they will remain at 12 and platoon with the outfield corner/DH roles. Tonkin needs to return this year. His development is more valuable than keeping Guerrier around. At some point they need to make a decision on Pelfrey. I hope they stay at 12 when that day comes.
18. Chris Herrmann will join the team for the trip in the NL parks. Tonkin goes to Rochester.
19. Darren Wolfson reports that there have been no extension talks thus far. Do the Twins buy high and extend Suzuki for his age 31 and 32 seasons? Do they sell high in a midseason trade? Catchers (along with shortstops and starting pitching) are the best trade currency during the season. I hope they don't extend him before the trade deadline. The winter bargain in Suzuki could turn into a prospect that will pay off for several years.
20. This. The twins are not a small-market team. They can afford to pay Dozier what he earns.
21. I am not sure I get the a Trout comparison. He is much younger and has never received an arbitration award. The biggest factor has to be Dozier's age in the years the Twins are purchasing. Lots of players are very good at 27 and mediocre at 32. Another factor is the relatively short span of time of success. The Twins would be buying high by extending him now.
22. I was wrong. Hicks returned and Santana is still here entering his third week. Should they and him down though he is playing well? His situation is somewhat similar to Pinto. They both would benefit from playing more. They both help this team more from the bench than the options at AAA. I think he will slump as everyone does and return to AAA. Meanwhile a versatile player to come off the bench and pinch hit or pinch run for a pitcher as part of a double switch will be valuable as they play in NL parks.
23. The kids will also see the large arbitration awards that follow very good seasons. I really hope this doesn't impact the performance of any young player, but a contract signing is seen once. In this case long term pay paid for performance over a short term. Arbitration would be seen 3 or 4 times. In arbitration it would be annual pay based on annual performance.
24. This data is also likely useless. With the help of Baseball Reference's play index I used the seasons 1998-2008 and found 15 players who played 2B as a 27 year old and had a WAR of at least 2 and compared it with their WAR at 32.
Player WAR 27 WAR 32 Chase Utley 7.3 3.8 Brian Roberts 7.2 1.2 Alfonso Soriano 5.4 2 Jose Vidro 5.3 1.4 Placido Polanco 4.6 4.4 Luis Castillo 4.4 -0.4 Marcus Giles 3.9 DNP Junior Spivey 3.9 DNP Quilvio Veras 3.6 DNP Orlando Hudson 3.5 2.8 Adam Kennedy 3.5 2.5 Brandon Phillips 3 1.7 Marlon Anderson 2.9 1.4 Ray Durham 2.5 2.5 Craig Counsell 2 -0.8
Edit-noticed Dan Uggla was missing. He was 1.8 at 27 and 2.9 at 32. Ben Zobrist was a SS at 27 but was a 4.8 WAR at 32.
25. How should teams project a 27 year olds performance and value at age 32 knowing that the historical data on aging is useless and shouldn't be a consideration?
