  1. You don't call the play when Schafer can't bunt. We have already seen failed attempts in less important situations this week. Pitchers on the bench bunt (and probably hit) better.
  2. Anyone ever seen a worse at bat? He can't hit. He can't bunt. He is a below average fielder. Give me Florimon or Butera.
  3. They need to find a manager that can figure out how to manage with 12 pitchers and 2 catchers. The Eric Fryer bench is pathetic today. While he is a better hitter than Schafer, so is everyone else in the major leagues.
  4. They need to go to 12 pitchers. This one man bench in a close game is unacceptable.
  5. Let's hope they go back to 12 pitchers when Mauer returns.
  6. Does Meyer need to be added to the 40 in the winter? If so, then why not add him to the 40 soon and let him start adjusting to major league hitters. Why wait until winter?
  7. It is important that the Twins have an adequate fourth OF next year. Signing Schafer decreases the chance that they will seek an adequate solution in the winter. I would DFA Schafer when Mauer returns. Shortstop is a difficult position to play. Santana has put in little work at SS. At this point, it would be far better to see what he can do in the spring at SS and keep him working in CF. If he doesn't do well now at SS, it will just be written off to being in CF and nothing will be learned.
  8. They need to hire the best manager available. If that guy happens to be in the organization right now, then go that direction. Will other teams be going after Molitor or Mientkiewicz or Glynn? If so, the Twins better hire one of them quick. If not, then why should the Twins be pursuing them? Staying in house will probably make an easier transition. Once the transition is over, they better have the best manager in place. I am not confident that guy is in the organization right now. I will take the rockier transition for the better manager.
  9. It needs to be Meyer, May and Milone. If necessary the a Twins can DFA Schafer to get the spot, but Correia or Burton would work. None of the three should stop Meyer from pitching. Might as well be Correia so they can start May in that spot Monday. Follow with Malone on Tuesday. Mauer will likely be ready to come back also. Four need to go. Burton, Correia, option Pino and option Colabello. I am not trying to predict what the Twins will do. This is what they should do.
  10. Is there any significance to his performance in a few games? Shouldn't there be enough games in which to see Schafer play? Shouldn't Gardy already know? I don't doubt your reasoning Brock. I am only concerned that his play the last two months will somehow take precedence over the last 4 years. An OK 100 plate appearances might stop the Twins from looking for a different solution.
  11. Both Santana and Escobar are solid enough to be utility players on a good team. Escobar is more like a Punto and Santana a Bonifacio. While on a bad team, they have an opportunity to improve their command of the strike zone with regular play. Keep them both in place for the remainder of the year.
  12. I hadn't really thought about it from that perspective. I wonder what A.J. Pederson would think. Would the same apply to international free agents? Many are signed for at 16 and never reach full season ball.
  13. Young guys make mistakes. The reason doesn't matter. Teams are wise to discipline and move forward. He has another month this year to work hard and show he doesn't need a third stop in AA.
  14. According to the Braves guy, he is not a good defensive CF. UZR and DRS confirm this in the season where he played significant innings. After 1251 PA, he has shown he can't hit. He has been released by the Astros and Braves. He is hitting .163 this year. Then there is the HGH suspension and felony drug arrest. It's hard to see the downside. Worst case, in a small sample he will hit a little and play the game the right way. The Twins respond by keeping him on the 40 without looking for a better solution. He was a top prospect in 2008. That has to mean something. The Twins top prospects that year were Nick Blackburn and Joe Benson. Maybe they are available. More warm bodies. What's the downside?
  15. Isn't the option only used if they send him back down this year? Seems kind of late in the year for that to be necessary.
  16. I look forward to the day when there is downside to rostering a player hitting .160 and the bar for being on the roster is somewhere above "warm body". How much more upside does Shafer have than Farris? Is there any value in rewarding the efforts efforts of a player on the AAA roster? Hicks could have taken his spot in AAA. Farris can also play infield. I don't think either is worthy of a winter spot in the 40, but I would have rewarded Farris' efforts with a few months in the majors.
  17. He was not injured. He was disciplined by the team. Wisely, the reason was kept in house thus far.
  18. Bonifacio has had a good career as a utility player. Santana may be a little better offensively and defensively. His ability to play anywhere up the middle may allow the Twins to carry an extra bat on the 25. There would be no need for both a back up in CF and middle infield. The right manager could utilize him 5 times a week in that role and everyday when an up the middle guy is injured. With Nunez, I think they still need a second utility guy. I think the Twins can do better.
  19. I am sure he is inexpensive. If necessary, pay more for a guy who can be an asset. They need to evaluate him as a player. He is no longer a prospect. He is 27 with nearly 1000 major league plate appearances. It really struck me yesterday when Dozier came up injured and the Twins had to move their starting shortstop off his position because their utility player can't play 2B. It struck me again as I realized he can't play CF either. Does he hit well enough to be predominantly a corner guy? Should the Twins be looking for a better option this winter? If they nontender him, they are going to need to look for someone else. Last year had they signed a true utility guy like Bonifacio, they would have had a asset to offer in trade. Maybe Farris can be that guy. Why not give him some time now? I know he would have been at 2B yesterday. I know he can back up CF. Nunez is showing his skill level at his peak age. Is it valuable enough to keep him on the 40 this winter? The Yankees didn't think so.
  20. What are your thoughts on keeping Willingham in the line up? Escobar of 5th in OPS playing a key defensive position well. Other young guys haven't performed nearly as well. It might be wise to reward his performance with a spot in the line up.
  21. Farris is more useful on this roster than Nunez right now. He can play CF and 2B. The only up the middle position Nunez can play is a poor SS. The Yankees DFA'd him because Dean Anna could play 2B. If he is a corner guy, he needs a better bat.
  22. We saw the lack of flexibility the Twins had with their bench last night. With 13 pitchers, there are three options on the bench assuming everyone is healthy. That isn't enough. They need another CF. Joe Mauer will return. They need to work to getting back to 12. There are spots for May, Meyer and Milone right now. There have been all July. It isn't lack of openings that have kept the Twins from evaluating them for next year. Here is another thought. DFA Correia and Burton today. Option Pino and Darnell. Bring up Meyer, Milone, May and Farris. Meyer and Farris need to be added to the 40. The timings need to work to match rotation spots, but Farris can certainly take Correia's spot today. Evaluate the three in the starting rotation. Evaluate Farris in a super utility role. He is only one year older than Nunez. Reports are that he is a versatile defender that is more than adequate defensively. He may be a better option in that role than Nunez. It would be good to find out. Meanwhile, Hicks can get time in AAA.
  23. Does he look like a guy the Twins should keep on the 40 man roster? At 27 years old and nearly 1000 major league plate appearances, this is probably close to his skill level. A career OPS+ of 86 might play if he was a good defender at SS or trending up. Neither of those are true. Bernier was outperforming him in AAA. He probably should have got the call earlier this summer.
  24. Hicks is earning a call up in September. Rosario is not close to showing he is a major league player. Escobar has earned the starting SS job.
  25. He really needs a good August to avoid a third season in AA.
