  1. I have had two teams move on me (North Stars and Hartford Whalers) and that whole league is dead to me now. (Hockey used to be my favorite sport. In school us used to buy green binders with the clear plastic covers, slice them open, and slide in pictures of North Stars players - mainly Gilles Meloche (awesome masks.) At the time of the moves I wasn't local for either team because by then I was in the military, although my legal residence was still Connecticut. I just still identify with both areas (born in one, grew up in the other) and didn't like it when back-stabbing owners took their teams and ran. I'm softening a little on the Stars because I'm within their local TV area and occasionally watch part of a game if there is absolutely nothing else on. They might have won me over right away if they had gone with Lone Stars instead of the generic Stars and changed the color scheme, just because that would have been pretty cool and it would have been enough of a break so that it wouldn't have been a twist of the knife every time I saw them play.
  2. I know I'm way late on this, but I support NASCAR fans wearing jackets, especially this guy:
  3. Just that a lot of people are envious of you
  4. I'd say somewhere in between. There is a budget, and I'd guess it's about $100M, maybe a bit more if extra ticket sales from a pennant race dictate. (Maybe quite a bit more (new TV money), if attendence doesn't slip too far.) The Twins were over that figure by quite a bit in 2010 and the crashed and burned, and we are really just starting to get past the consequences of that spending. A lot of salary came off the books the past two off-seasons, and some of it has been spent, but I think TR still has a lot of payroll flexibility if the opportunity presents itself. What would you have done differently that was realistic?
  5. She's just happy to be going to the game. He just found out Suzuki is hitting in the 2-hole.
  6. Required opening day prep - links only for the videos due to the limit of 1 embedded video per post: Who's On First? Centerfield http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04KQydlJ-qc In case it gets too depressing around here, at least we’re not Cubs fans. A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request: Optional Extra Credit: Van Lingle Mungo – I wouldn’t add this one because it’s too slow for opening day, but Dave Frishberg is a Twin Cities guy and was one of my father’s friends from his school days. Study up - just under 1 hour until first pitch.
  7. If he screws up their plans maybe they just fire him.
  8. I can't relate to the first part. I grew up in Connecticut as a Twins fan among a sea of Red Sox and Yankees fans, and hatin' on them was part of the attraction. Sure, my excuse was being born in MN, but how much of it could I really remember when I left when I was 9 months old? I can relate to the second part, though. I'm a cheap SOB - that comes with the habit of multiplying the price everything x 8 (wife + six kids.) That $75 ticket just became $600, or $300 if I can talk her into letting me just take the boys. That TV sounds pretty good, and I can always log on the ESPN to heckle White Sox fans.
  9. I was going to get all serious about this, but my mind began to wander, first to "Bartlett reminds me a little of Mark DeRosa" and then to "this is all VodkaDave's fault. After TR & co. read this: http://www.twinsdaily.com/showthread.php/10673-The-Surprisingly-Simple-Solution-to-the-25th-man-question?highlight=derosa they discovered DeRosa had retired so they are trying to make a new DeRosa out of Bartlett. (Dishonorable mention to Rick Blaine for linking the two names in post #19 of that thread.) My serious point was that the Bartlett move indicates that the front office still hasn't learned about maximizing assets and squeezing the last bit of value out of every roster spot. Alex Presley didn't have a lot of value, but a 28 year old who can actually play CF and get on base a little has more value than a 34 year old "superutility" who missed all of last year and hasn't been good for several years.
  10. That is far from certain. The Twins weren't the only team in need of a shortstop but put off by the comp pick.
  11. Enough for them to joke about it in Lite beer commercials. After this one was made, George re-hired him, so they dubbed "hired" over the "fired" and left the rest as it was. www.youtube.com/embed/0agZEMEpiVI Here is the updated version: They went back to the original after he was fired again.
  12. It could be both reasons. "Congrats on the kid. I hope he likes Baltimore." (Isn't that where ex-Twins always go?)
  13. He was under contract for two more years. They signed him to a ridiculously long deal at least a year before they had to, and they got no discount for doing so. The Pujols and Hamilton contracts might doom the Angels, and this one doesn't look any better.
  14. Mine doesn't. At all. Ever. They aren't quite White Sox fans, but they're close.
  15. "Yesterday Eddie" - nice. The only thing I like about the idea of Bartlett and Kubel making the team is nostalgia, and that is mainly applies to Kubel. Bartlett was a decent player in his prime and was a whole lot better than Brendan Harris, but hopefully the nice things I said sound like damning with faint praise. He was an adequate SS who was undervalued by his team and traded for an inadequate one. Kubel his hard to think about without wondering what might have been if he hadn't blown his knee out, but what he became was still pretty good for a while.
  16. Is that skinny young guy in the Senators uniform really Killebrew? Wow.
  17. I'm not sure I got it with the searching. The photo file name has Oliva in it, so I assume he's the one about to shake Carew's hand. It looks like bad-knees Tony and '70s hideousness in the uniforms, which would make it Steve Braun. If it's 1970 or prior, it's Bob Allison, but #4 looks too small standing next to Carew to be him.
  18. OK, I saw Willihammer's post, so now I know.
  19. If a game thread about a cancelled game (plus the joke) doesn't count as mindlessness, I don't know what does.
  20. The only one I can think of is forgetting to cancel the auto-renew. (Worked for me.) It's a bit late for that one now. Will "The Twins are still tied for first" help?
  21. Most of us don't want the pics
  22. A book? On Christmas? Are you nuts?
  23. Right now I don't think they would have to ask. They could just run him out there again.
  24. That's fine. What would it cost them for the opportunity to pay market rates for someone like Trout? Buxton + Stewart might get them to think about it (or at least talk some more), and two of Trout's underpaid years are already gone. Most of the time you have to develop elite players in order to have the opportunity to pay market value for them.
