  1. That's especially true with hitters. With pitchers, it's usually health (or lack thereof) that wins out. if anyone would like to worry about a prospect, Kohl Stewart might be a better choice.
  2. I never thought Pelfrey would get into my top 5, but his last two starts have been very good. His velocity is up and the new splitter is an interesting wrinkle. It wouldn't be the first time a pitcher added a pitch and made a major leap forward. I think the real question is does Milone go to the pen (DFA Stauffer) or does Milone still have an option year. (I think he does.)
  3. 2 Samuel 14:26 And when he cut the hair of his head (for at the end of every year he used to cut it; when it was heavy on him, he cut it), he weighed the hair of his head, two hundred shekels by the king’s weight. (ESV) That's about 5 lbs of hair - one hairy dude.
  4. Even more important, when he gets a chance at a save, he gets a save.
  5. When I was about 12 I got to go to a couple of games at Fenway with a friend of mine. We stayed at the same hotel as the visiting teams (my friend's family had some kind of partial season plan and they knew their way around). I bought a 3x5 spiral notebook and we just hung out in the lobby getting autographs. The Orioles were in town for the Sunday game (rained out - got to see Rick Dempsey do his routine on the tarp before they called it) and the Yankees came in for a Monday night game. Reggie came out, and of course he was mobbed. He excused himself after a minute or two (before we got to the front of the mob) and went into a restroom. I turned to my friend, said "I think I have to go' and followed him in. I took care of business, finished washing my hands about the same time as Reggie, then asked him if I could get his autograph. He said, "You don't even let a guy pee in peace, do you?" I don't know if I even answered, but he signed my book. I still have the darned thing, and it's amazing some of the names in it. Palmer, Weaver, D and T Martinez, Oscar Gamble, I think Catfish Hunter... I'm going to have to get that out again, because there were a lot more familiar names. I also got the autograph of some guy who turned out to be one of the trainers for the Orioles, but he looked like somebody and he was with somebody... Anyway, Reggie has always been OK with me after that.
  6. You forgot Randy Johnson. Must have been too young to remember.
  7. Cue the Jim Mora-like rant (Play-offs? Playoffs?...) Our current problems are more like this: "We can't win at home. We can't win on the road. As general manager, I just can't figure out where else to play." -- 1992 - Pat Williams, Orlando Magic GM.
  8. Doesn't it take at least 4 batters?
  9. The baseball people might have said "We're not crazy about the options. Let's roll the dice with Shafer as a starter, but keep the leash short in case he turns back into the failed prospect." If they said something other than that and management still trusts them, that would be a problem, because even I knew that the Shafer/Robinson combo involved a lot of crossed fingers.
  10. I think Glunn won the bidding. Jennifer Lawrence and the Game of Thrones girl lost.
  11. Since we're bidding, I'll go three years if Twins can win the playoffs, May's elbow is undamaged, and Meyer turns into a right-handed version of Randy Johnson.
  12. That must be the Twins' problem. it's not that the team is bad. There are just too many fans who are bad luck. (If 's just you, we just need you to stop going to 95 games a year and cut back to about 60.)
  13. At least he learned how to avoid swinging at breaking balls in the dirt while he was gone. < /sarc>
  14. It seems like I read that Nolasco would be making two rehab starts. Did anyone else see that or am I imagining things?
  15. Sad news. Just a link: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/120038934/joe-nathan-to-have-season-ending-right-elbow-surgery
  16. Unfortunately, I already voted "9" and it's too late to change my vote.
  17. From the wind-up, once a pitcher goes into a pitching motion, he has to complete a legal pitch to the batter or it's a balk. The runner is irrelevant. Did he unnaturally speed up his motion? Yes. Did it deceive the batter? It certainly could have, and probably would have if the batter decided he wanted to kill Torii by swinging away. It sure looks like a balk to me.
  18. Anyone have Tonya Harding's number?
  19. I thought that was his real name. No?
  20. Baseball had the wink-and-nod approach to PEDs for years and enjoyed the resurgence and profits from the HR boom. Then, when the public outcry reached a certain level, the league changed course and had no problem dragging the names of the players through the mud to show how tough they were on enforcement, even when the PED use was from the period when they were essentially complicit. A-Rod has definitely done things to deserve our distrust and scorn, but I'm sure there were a lot of players who took the lie and ride it out approach and it worked. The league certainly didn't create an atmosphere where coming clean and moving on were attractive options.
  21. I know I'm kind of late on this, but he has two pitches: meatball and hanging curve. There aren't a lot of good choices to call.
  22. I'm just following on the gamecast, so I'm guessing the Twins keep hitting doubles and HR's and he makes them all stop at 1B. Holding Mauer up at third was a dirty trick, too.
  23. I'm pretty sure you'd regret using it on Tommy Herr, too. I'm starting to regret using my 744th on him already.
  24. Anyone who could hit like he could hit is capable of putting together a hot streak at age 39. He's healthy for the first time in several years. He will probably feel his age by July. Talk to me about his hitting then Plenty of people thought they knew their way around testing procedures only to have the testing technology catch up to them. I'm sure he knows he's one-and-done now. Has too much money to lose if he's suspended again.
