  1. It's all risk and hope. We hope for Buxton and Sano to become great. Signing someone like Machado to a long-term deal is risky because, well, what if? But at some point these things are all aversions to, well, winning, imo. At some point I think we just need to march forward. It's no secret whatsoever on this site my feelings on signing Machado ... I've been singing this song for months now, long before the 2018 season ended. We have the space to do it. Sigh. Yeah, and for as long as I've been singing the song, though, I didn't think we would. But ... if he goes to the White Sox ... that is NOT something I want to see, at all, especially if he signs for less than what we think. I don't buy this 'Chicago is more attractive than Minneapolis' stuff. It's not. It's really not. Having spent extensive time in both places, it's just not. New York might be a different story. But then, who knows ... maybe to him it is ... maybe it's not. I think Minnesota has the ability to make it worth his while, though, and I think it's a HUUUUUUUUUGE opportunity lost to not go out and get him.
  2. Thank you. I think you both had good points to make here and good points to be heard/seen by all.
  3. There was a point made earlier about who we could sign instead, signing two players vs one Machado, which would serve us better, (which I don't think it would) which brings in the thought of quantity over quality. And it was mentioned about one player wasn't going to win it all for us, which wasn't the point I made, which I addressed above.
  4. No one player wins a WS, and that wasn't my point of Machado being a difference maker. We need talent to get past Boston, Houston and New York. We are going nowhere without enough of it. I don't believe the Dodgers make it to the WS without Machado. Winning it, though, that is a team effort ... and having a difference maker does increase your odds, but it won't be won on one person's back completely. You sign Machado because of where your team is right now. I believe the Twins are on the verge ... having Machado makes us a team to be reckoned with, especially if Sano and Bux come through. Yeah, if we don't win it all and sink, we have this long contract. If we aren't winning, do you think Machado wants to stick around? He will be tradable to someone, provided he's still playing as he is and I think he will be. Look, this is all my opinion. But I think Machado or Harper (but especially Machado) on this team, right now, would be a difference maker. I think it's what pushes us past the competition in the AL ... or at least makes us competitive to them. Is making it to the WC and losing enough for you? I didn't think it was. Signing two players for the cost of Machado is not the same as signing Machado. That's like all these trade ideas people come up with where they think quantity is going to get the quality. No, it's not.
  5. Wow, sold out at 8:04? And tickets went on sale at 8am? You guys sold out like rock stars!
  6. IF he becomes one. The jury is still out on that. Machado brings that to the team RIGHT NOW. If Sano and/or Buxton become that, too, then wow, we will have THE team. If not, and we don’t sign better, we will not be competitive. I think we can sign better than sitting around hoping for more.
  7. Did you figure in all the other taxes?
  8. You ask a fair question, but I think if you have the opportunity of adding a Machado, you do it. I think in the case of the White Sox and the Twins, having Machado is a difference maker. I don’t think having the other two instead make up that difference.
  9. I really do not know what to make of this FO’s decisions anymore. I know I am far from knowledgeable as they are, and don’t have all the information they do, but just don’t know what to think anymore. I’ve worked hard to give them every benefit of a doubt, but that is just impossible to do anymore.
  10. Then let the other teams do it. The point is, if the White Sox can land him, so can we. I’m fine passing on him, but not so the White Sox can get him. That will be a game changer for them, and I don’t like the odds of us becoming also-rans to them with him anchoring their soon Ready up and comers.
  11. There is an ongoing discussion of this in the Other MLB forum. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/32054-manny-machado/page-2
  12. How is playing in those cities more value? I get New York, but I don't get it for Chicago. Why not Houston on that list? How is playing for the White Sox more value? Their fanbase is considerably smaller. Their coverage is much less than the Cubs. The city itself is not that great ... and I say that as a 19-year resident. Anything the White Sox offer, the Twins can offer.
  13. I’ve been saying this in the off-season news thread. We will never win as we have not and will not do enough. Sox are up and coming, and Machado will anchor them for seasons to come, primed to take over when Cleveland does decline, and the Twins will continue to be also-rans without any top of the line star power. And the bright lights of Chicago? Pffft ... hugely overrated. Minneapolis might be smaller, but there is plenty that is as good and some that is better than Chicago. Pay him the money. Get him.
  14. I thought once a player is DFA’d they have 7 days to trade him or put him on waivers. I’m not sure when he was put on waivers, but the 7 days would seem about right for him to be claimed today. Yes? No? Seth?
  15. Good observation. I wouldn't be surprised if you are correct. You know ... this answers Mike's observation in the other forum about the Twins and not having any contracts on the books after 2020 ... or something like that.
  16. Ugh ... he'll be with the White Sox and that will be a huge mistake for us if that happens. Unless, of course, the Phillies are willing to pay the money he wants. I don't think the White Sox will outbid them, but ... stranger things have happened. This big market, small market stuff ... and how he won't come here is bogus ... he'll go where he gets the most money. Personally, I think it will be worth it to a) have him on our team and b ) not to play against him within the division.
  17. Whoever it is, I'm really sorry I missed Nathan last year! He was always my favorite Twin when he was on the team. So, be that a lesson to y'all ... don't miss this event! It's the best ... no matter who the guest is. Will he be better than Nathan?????
  18. It’s been 7 days, has Slegers then cleared waivers?
  19. The White Sox market is really not that big, though. And Chicago is not a baseball town despite having two teams here. They are a football town first and foremost. Then it's Cubs. Then it's Bulls and Blackhawks. Then it's Fire. Then it's Sky. Here's where the White Sox are.
  20. Well, and I’ll be furious, too! Because if the White Sox can get him, so could we.
  21. He’s going to end up with the White Sox and everyone will be shocked.
  22. Good for him! Happy for him! Good luck, Brian Dozier!
  23. I 2nd that ... and 3rd it, and 4th it, and 5th it ... Unfortunately, that was never gonna happen, but not because they couldn’t have.
  24. IIRC, Shape of Water was one of Ash’s favorite movies of all time.
