  1. While reading through this thread, I was determined to write something about how Allen scares the daylights out of me every time I see him pitch and that we should stay away and look for other options. ...then I looked at the other options: Kimbrel: no way we sign him Ottavino: great set up guy, but can he close? Someone is going to overpay ? ? Gets pretty thin after these two. I agree with those of you who would want to sign him to an "opportunist contract." He still has nasty stuff and closer experience. He might be our best option out there, bang for buck. I'm in on a 2/20.
  2. He can take Joe's locker. Great value signing. Lots of power. Lots of leadership. Will help to get Sano's head on straight. Makes games much more interesting to watch as well...
  3. What is everyone's expectations for Schoop? If he hits .250 with 25 HRs and plays average to slightly above average defense are you going to be upset?
  4. Sorry-should have been more specific...I love all the individual discussions about the individual transactions. What gets me is when people say we have failed this off-season...when there is still much more to come!
  5. I was getting really nervous that these would be our only moves of the off-season... ...but then I heard that the off-season had barely began and will extend through it's normal time period! What a relief! Maybe relief pitchers will be coming soon! More relief! Breathe people. Long off-season. Be critical and judgmental AFTER we sign (or don't sign) free agents. *To me, Cron and Schoop are nice pieces to the puzzle. Are there more to follow? I'd bet on it! Just how big they will be, we will find out!
  6. Many of you are disappointed it wasn't a longer contract-but Schoop maybe only wanted a one year "prove it" contract to set himself up. Any more years might have have been too costly and too much of a risk.
  7. If Kepler and Cave received the same # of ABs this year, (A) who hits more HRs, and ( who plays better defense? Just food for thought...
  8. Daniel Murphy has a career .344 OBP (and .299 BA). He might sign a reasonable 2-3 year deal... I like the Bour idea...except platoon him with Cron, not Austin.
  9. I hope you are psychic and it was a Goldschmidt-ian Slip! Grossman-let go. I'd be willing to bet Wade can match what he can do or better. Odorizzi: let go. I like him, I really do. But 9-10 million can go a long way to an upgrade in the rotation. Please sign Rosario/Kepler/Buxton/Sano to as many long term deals as possible!
  10. Okay then you have to take into consideration that we might have saved money by signing Cron as well...instead of Santana/Cruz/whoever else. Austin's splits against lefties are NO WHERE NEAR Cron's! (nor is Austin a proven MLB player) Kepler is a mystery replacement at 1B. Sano is a mystery replacement at 1B. Astudillo over Cron? You want a 5' 9" (or shorter) 1B? Love the guy but do not want him playing over there. Also, if $5 million makes or breaks a "big" signing, that means it was never going to happen any way. If they want Miller at 12...if Miller is willing to sign with us for 12, this $5 million will not cause it not to happen. I just can't see them saying, "if we didn't sign Cron for 5, we would be willing to sign Miller for 12." Just do not see it. Obviously none of us know for sure. But this seems highly unlikely to me.
  11. Not sure how...how are you connecting the two? just saw your last post. nevermind. 1 year and 5 million seems like a good gamble. You guys are acting like it's a crippling move. It literally does not effect any other FA signing we make.
  12. I don't like either one of those guys for the money they are going to make. I would rather: 1) Sell the farm for 3 cheap years of Noah 2) Sign Garrett Richards to a Pineda-like deal 3) Sign Bucholz to a cheap 1 or 2 year deal 4) Sign Britton
  13. Option A DH only. 140 games. Option B split DH/1B. 140 games. Average defense. Option C split DH/1B. 140 games. Below average defense.
  14. .255 34 bombs 105 rbi 18 million .250 28 bombs 80 rbi 5 million .230 25 bombs 70 rbi 550k Who do you choose? To each their own...
  15. At age 28, Cron hit .307 with .929 ops against lefties. For a good team. Most of you are saying Austin did pretty much the same thing...or has potential to do the same thing without spending $5 million. I'll take my chances on Cron far more than Austin. What has Austin done to make you guys think he is as good as Cron?
  16. Austin: AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS vs. Left 89 9 21 3 0 8 20 9 1 32 1 1 .236 .307 .539 .846 vs. Right 155 25 35 7 0 9 27 10 1 63 0 1 .226 .275 .445 .720 Cron: AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS vs. Left 150 24 46 11 1 8 21 14 4 47 0 1 .307 .376 .553 .929 vs. Right 351 44 81 17 0 22 53 23 13 98 1 1 .231 .300 .467 .767 I like what Cron did against lefties last year. Might have been a nice, cheap upgrade. (whoops-sorry for the hard-to-read stats)
  17. I heard Boston was pretty good last year...and also the Yankees. TB ended up still going 90-72 (which is pretty damn impressive). They are they definition of a team...no major components but a lot of solid players. Cron was one of them, as he contributed in 140 games. For those of you upset about the Cron/Austin redundancy, I'm guessing this means Austin is gone or AAA depth, and we look for a left handed bat to platoon. Whether that bat is Santana, Marwin Gonzalez, or someone else, I really do think they will add someone of relevance. Cron is an upgrade over Austin, if used properly-think that is what this is. For $5 million, worth a shot, especially if they land a bigger fish to work with him.
  18. Any 3 of our prospects outside of the top 3. Then try to extend 5/150.
  19. Clay Buchholz and Garrett Richards please. Both are affordable. Clay can pitch out of the pen or start...had a quiet great year last year. Richards can be our Pineda signing of last year. Pitching is at a premium right now-the top 15 guys are going to cost quite a bit. *Britton is not going to be a bargain, but signing two affordable guys like Buchholz and Richards will allow us to spend a little extra on him.
  20. I would LOVE to sign Donaldson to a 1 year deal...whatever $ it takes. I just see someone taking a chance on a 3 year deal for him, which I would not.
  21. I don't see this being an issue. Players, at any level, realize very quickly if their coaches know what they are talking about or not.
  22. I'm a "no" on Santana..unless they eat a lot of the contract, which they probably will not. I would rather trade Kepler and sign Brantley...high OBP and BA.
  23. So you're saying the Portland Weedpatch or Portland Cannabis baseball teams will never exist? All of the distributors can buy the suites...a lot of happy people at those games.
  24. Marwin Gonzalez anyone? Can play all over the field with a decent bat...
