  1. The American League playoff standings make for an interesting waiver wire trade market. Can it generate the kind of interest and offer the non-roster talent that would make the Twins or you as fantasy Twins GM trade Ervin Santana? Standings --- Texas 0.5 Cleveland 1.0 Baltimore 1.0 Toronto 3.5 Boston 3.5 Detroit I don’t think a team below Detroit in the American League would want to take on Santana. Every team on that list would want Santana with the possible exception of Cleveland. Some of those teams might need the Twins to eat some salary. Detroit is currently first on the list because they are 00.1% behind Boston. I don’t see Detroit being able to offer the non-roster talent to make the deal, but they would make a claim to keep Santana from getting to one of the other 5 teams named. So I would wait until one of those teams falls at least 00.1% behind Detroit and hope to make a deal. Let’s look at Boston, because they need Ervin Santana. Michael Kopech is not on the BoSox 40-man roster. He is currently on ranked #93 by Baseball America and #80 by MLB Pipeline. Would Boston give up Kopech to improve their odds of making the playoffs? I think Yes. Is Michael Kopech enough to give up Ervin Santana? I would want a little more. How about: 1 of Mauricio Dubon (#12 Sox prospect on MLB Pipeline) or Roniel Roudes (#13) and 1 of Trey Ball (#14), Jake Cosart (#19), Bobby Dalbec (#21), or #23 Josh Pennington Who says No?
  2. We used Korn Ferry at my place. So you say the new GM has to keep the Manager. Then he is told that Antony is still on staff. There will be filler. There's always filler in baseball as guys are recycled.
  3. What I meant to say is that search firms will bring in so many "candidates". Some of those candidates will be filler. The Twins will prolly hire one of the filler. Antony will be a candidate.
  4. Search firms don't do the hire. They only search for candidates.
  5. Everything I have heard says the Twins/Pohlads are reluctant to eat salary and want someone who can contribute next year. That would hold down their ability to deal. Otherwise they could fetch a nice return on Santana
  6. I preferred Turner when they were drafted
  7. Great question. If Polanco is not an everyday SS, then Escobar is. Then if Escobar gets hurt, who plays SS -- Polanco? Dozier? Usually the conversion from SS to 2B is not that hard, so I wonder why he played almost all of his AAA innings this year at 2B? With Dozier in place, he should have played SS and/or 3B and/or LF. We won't know about Polanco until either he or Dozier has a change in scenery. I'm guessing that will be Dozier in the off-season.
  8. speaking of lost seasons
  9. I think they are keeping Berrios down due to Super 2 considerations
  10. I wonder how that will translate to eating salaries on trades.
  11. The Twins would have to eat Santana's salary this year to get surplus value. I would. Will Pohlad? The Pirates could like dump Santana on a team like the Rockies in the off-season.
  12. Santana is blocking Polanco.
  13. Suzuki in free agency means multiple years. Pass
  14. There should be at least 4 playoff contenders in the market for a catcher. OPS .516 Cleveland .599 NY Mets .602 Toronto .662 Boston Suzuki might be the third best catcher (after Lucroy and Norris). He's the cheapest of those three in terms of talent to acquire. The Twins can eat his contract (not saying they will). I think Lucroy is bound for Boston. What in the other organizations would make you pull the trigger? Is the Indians 8th rated prospect C Francisco Mejia enough? If the Twins ate salary, would they throw in Eric Gonzales (#11) or Yu-Cheng Chan (#12)?
  15. I said the Twins international signing and development is suboptimal and this is your defense. Did the Twins successfully develop Arcia, Solarte, Guerra, Hendriks, or even Ortiz? They didn't even sign Guerra, Liriano, or Ortiz. Or Morneau (as in international free agent). Between Liriano coming up and Arcia, the Twins turned out Ramos, Mijares and Hendriks? Look at the international free agents on the Twins teams that lost 90 games 2011-2014. 2011 Nishi (not a J2 signing), Mijares, and Hendriks 2012 Hendriks 2013 Pinto, Arcia, Hendriks 2014 Pino, Polanco, Arcia, Pinto The Twins failure to sign and develop international free agents rates up their with failure to draft and develop front line pitching or above average position players
  16. Approximately 28% of MLB players are foreign born. If you subtract those from Canada and Puerto Rico subject to the draft, it's still more than 24%. Are the major leaguers turning out by the Twins farm system anywhere near 24% of the total?
  17. Vargas is from Puerto Rico and so is not an international free agent. The Twins international signing and development is suboptimal IMO
  18. It would be better to eat Nolasco's contract than to throw it in. A better return
  19. I did not ask what would Terry Ryan do?
  20. Brian Dozier's slash stats are up to .261/.344/.467. His OPS is .811, up from .741 when we discontinued the Will Brian Dozier's Contract Turn Into An Asset? thread. Brian just might be our All-Star representative. What would be a fair trade -- that is, one both teams would make and you wouldn't complain about? FWIW, the Blue Jays and Royals appear to be the two buyers this year. Last year the Royals gave up Sean Manaea and Aaron Brooks for 2+ months of Ben Zobrist. There appears to be no ace on the market this year.
  21. I get most of this, except the attitude. May is not blocking anyone. He is needed in the rotation. Start by eliminating pitchers who are not young: Santana, Hughes, Nolasco, and Milone I would keep Gibson, because we need 5 starters So next April (in no particular order) we would have Gibson, Berrios, Duffey, and May. That's 4 No one's blocked. Jay might join mid-season. Gonsalves might replace whoever is hurt and/or ineffective. It could be May or any of the others.
  22. The time is only three months in a lost season. I don't see the risk, especially in a lost season. I agree he can be a lights out closer. I think he could be solid #3 starter with upside, which would make him one of the 2 or 3 best starters on the team. #3 starter > elite closer Give him a solid shot at starting before converting him.
  23. His BABIP in May to date is .389. BB% is 9.45% in May. Everything else is great. K% is down to 17.6%. fixed BB%
  24. He's going to show he can hit LHP's, even if he has to give up switch hitting. Or Mauer is going to have to retire.
