  1. So is $25 million. Missing out on a guy you want over $2.5 million/year when you're $30 million under budget is beyond foolish.
  2. Sounds like it. But the Twins have drawn their line in the sand at 4/$100 and won't budge, I reckon. Principles!
  3. It would seem Atlanta has made an offer but it's not the top one. I'm saying we seem happy sitting back and waiting while he squeezes them enough to be satisfied. Time to tell him to decide or you're moving on. After signing Will Smith, I'm guessing the Nats might be out. We might be his best offer. He can take it or not. I'm guessing we're also holding on any discussions about David Price waiting for this to settle.
  4. This is where Falvey has to learn to close the deal. Obviously he's not as desperate to return to Atlanta as MadBaum was to go to Arizona or he'd have signed already. Top Atlanta's offer and give him 24 hours to accept.
  5. I'm reluctant too. But we either sign someone we have reservations about, or we sit here with a payroll $30 million under budget. Adding a 5th year which requires 600 PA's isn't much additional risk. If he's healthy and good enough to get 600 PA's in year 4, bring on year 5.
  6. The Twins need to go on offense with Donaldson. Add a 5th year option if he gets to 600 PA's in year 4. Tell him he has 24 hours to accept. The Braves are sniffing around a trade with Colorado and we should not allow ourselves to be held hostage while they do.
  7. I seriously doubt there will be a trade coming. But if there is, it makes sense to do the signing first. They might not be so eager to sign if we just traded for Price/Gray/Archer etc. Especially Hill.
  8. I can be OK with this if we either sign Donaldson or trade for Price. Otherwise, we're $20 million under budget dumpster diving like we never left the Dome.
  9. OK. Get your frustration and sarcasm out of the way today. Tomorrow: Why Bailey is actually better than MadBaum and Hill is better than Kuechel!
  10. He's not coming here. If he was, he'd have signed a week or two ago. The Nats are at 4 years. Sounds lik the Braves are too. We'd have to out bid them in $ or years. That's not happening.
  11. Mauer's the player of this century so far. Even of the last 25 years. But he peaked in 2009 before this decade. I'd go Dozier. He did almost as much in fewer years, and his contract didn't weight the team down.
  12. Clevinger is the best pitcher on this list, but Cleveland's not doing that unless they absolutely rob us blind. I also don't think the Rockies will trade Gray unless we overpay significantly. Same with Boyd and Ray to a lesser extent. Realistically, taking on Price and paying $25/15/15 of his salary with the Redsox picking up $41 million is the only realistic option unless you can convince yourself to get excited about Archer.
  13. They entered the off-season with the #2 starter locked down. They needed to add 3, a #1, a #3 and a #4.. Retaining Odo and Pineda filled the 3rd and 4th spots. But the biggest and most important was not addressed. There's no way to spin it as a positive. Put another way, their job is to allocate their available payroll as effectively as possible to improve the team. Instead they are sitting on $30 million in unspent cash, because they couldn't get a "deal." That benefits no one except the Pohlads. But perhaps their's a GM award for "most wins per payroll $" or "team that had the least bad contracts" that we don't know about. Even then, the Rays will win.
  14. It's ~$101 now. They throw $7-8 million at one of the remaining pitchers in the bargain bin and go into the season with a $109 million payroll. A cut of about $16 million from 2019.
  15. To be clear, I'm not one of the idiots ripping on Mauer for being hurt. He clearly was hurt in 2011. The issue the front office's inexplicable bungling of how it was communicated, which made them look like idiots and made Mauer (unfairly) look soft.
  16. "Impact Pitching" is going to be this front office's "bilateral leg weakness."
  17. I'd offer the Redsox someone between 15-20 in the system in exchange for giving us $7 million this year and $17 million for 2021 and 2022 with Price. We would pay him $25 million this year (may as well, we have nothing else to spend it on) and then would only be on the hook for $15 million/year for 2021 and 2022. The Redsox get big relief this year, which is the primary concern. I'd then sign Wood as well, hoping that both of them can last at least until Pineda comes back and at least one of them can be there in the play-offs.
  18. Yep. Price is the only one that you won't have to overpay for in prospects. So either we overpay in prospects for Gray or Boyd or we overpay in salary for broken down David Price. It's a fine corner they've painted themselves into.
  19. If they somehow avoid the Saints, I think they can win a play-off game. For 2021, they need to clear the over the hill guys (Rhodes, Griffen, Reif) out and spend some real $$ on the offensive line.
  20. Betances signs with the Mets. I bet we were in on him though. The top Twins article on MLB trade rumors is about Cron going to the Tigers. I guess that says it all.
  21. High being subjective, obviously the Royals could not keep their team together if it meant having a $200 million payroll. That said, they also didn't have to collapse as much as they did. They made some poor choices in the aftermath of the World Series win. The Twins don't have to follow a Royals/Marlins model to win a WS. They can follow a Cardinals model.
  22. Deal. Although the chances of that being the starting 5 is small. They will surely sign/trade for some veteran who will end up in the opening day rotation. I just don't have high hopes for who it will be.
  23. Because Dobnak, Smeltzer and Thorpe aren't exactly hot prospects?
  24. Obviously they don't want to fail. The question is what do they see as their job? Their talk indicated it was to go big and make a run at a world series. Their actions indicated it's to be the "smartest" GM in the room and avoid a "bad" contract at all costs, even if it means they have no realistic chance at their stated goal.
  25. Sure, we heard that from the team. I think most fans knew in their gut what was coming. I certainly did. If you think it's all "mindset" don't you think the "mindset" of the team and the line-up would have been better in game 2 if we'd had MadBaum on the mound instead of an Uber Driver with 5 career starts?
