  1. This isn't the same as Joe Blow. His family doesn't have to move. He would be in Minneapolis 3 months per year and on the road 3 months per year. His family can live wherever they want.
  2. There is no indication that MadBaum said he wouldn't play here. Does he get us passed the Yankees alone? No. Let's say Berrios steps up into an ace. He wins game 1. Now we roll out MadBaum, Odo and Pineda in games 2-4. Does that give us a better shot to win 2 more than Odo, Pineda and Smeltzer? Yes.
  3. The only thing lamer than the "he wouldn't play here" excuse is the "Yeah well every other team passed on him too" excuse. That can literally apply to every FA ever. Give me a break.
  4. Why would you give Garret Cole 9 years. FA starters almost always require you to risk bad years at the end of them. That's just the way it is. If you have a window to win, you have to be willing to risk a bad contract or two 5-6 years from now. Otherwise you will never, ever play in FA and you will forever be the Little Team that could who gets steamrolled by the Yankees in the 1st round.
  5. Exactly. If the Twins offered him 5/$100, he'd be a Twin. No he probably wouldn't come here for equal offers. So you pony up a little more. He could fly his family in every week-end.
  6. Because they didn't think he was worth 5 years.
  7. In any one case that could be true. But the "no one wants to play here" blanket excuse is tired. The Brewers, White Sox and Co. all sign FA's to bigger contracts that we ever do. In this case, his agent said it wasn't the case, and Doogie says the Twins wouldn't go to 5 years. So we're flushing 2020 to worry about 2024. Again.
  8. I can't put this on the Pohlads. I guarantee they didn't tell Falvey to cut $20 million in payroll after a 100 win season with massive attendance increases.
  9. Doogie says they didn't even attempt to top the 5/$85 he got from the D-Backs.
  10. For those would rather "spend that money elsewhere" where are you going to spend it? We have a current payroll of $100 million and can allegedly spend $130-140 million. There aren't many places left to spend it.
  11. ***regrets Googling Cleveland Steamer**
  12. He would be our game 1 or game 2 starter.
  13. And I'm sure somewhere there was a metric that said Verlander was a shell of himself and only a fool would acquire that contract.
  14. You could make this argument against ever spending $$ on FA pitching. It's expensive and often it doesn't work out. But we're never going to beat the Yankees with a rotation that has Lewis Thorpe, Smeltzer and Dobnak in it.
  15. I heard his wife is from Flagstaff AND his girlfriend is from Tuscon. So you can see why he turned down 5/$100 from the Twins.
  16. Exactly. It's no one decision in a vacuum. It goes back to not signing Kuechel in June, not getting a starter at the deadline and doing nothing now. With a "oh man are we going to get impact pitching" press conference thrown in the middle.
  17. They won't trade precious, precious prospects and the FA options are down to almost nothing.
  18. Time to sign Ervin Santana to a minor league deal pat yourself on the back and call it an off-season Falvine.
  19. Lol. If they can't beat 5/$85 for MadBaum there is zero chance they were ever serious about Donaldson.
  20. I'm officially over Falvine. They are indeed StatGeek Terry Ryan II.
  21. Zero reason we couldn't top that. Inexcusable.
  22. Speaking more to overall payroll. They are around $150 million and in the top 10.
  23. Twins still doing nothing.
  24. Falvey has proven to be a geeky stat-head version of Terry Ryan. Clinging to prospects like grim death and gravely afraid of signing a bad contract. That's not entirely a bad thing. But it's also not entirely good. Once, just once, I'd like to see the Twins behave like the St. Louis Cardinals instead of the Tampa Rays. But I'm now pretty convinced it will never happen until there a new owner and a completely new FO and mindset. Until then, we'll be a plucky team that wins our division once in a while, and then gets our brains beat in by the Yankees.
  25. We were told this regime was different. They would be aggressive when the window was open. Then they did little to supplement a clear play-off team at the deadline, refusing to part with ANY top 15 prospects and now they've sat by as the pitching they need goes elsewhere. We were duped again.
