    I would trade him for a useful reliever, or perhaps package him with someone else for a decent starter. Aaron Gleeman said it best on the recent podcast… Every team has a player that fans are tired of. Max Kepler is our tired player. Doesn’t mean he’s bad. We’re just tired of seeing his underlying metrics and wondering why he can’t put it together at the plate.

    They better have several major upgrades elsewhere in the lineup if Iglesias is the starting SS. The Twins are losing a top of the order player in Correa and a player like Iglesias is a bottom of the order hitter. The offense is a pretty major reason why we ended up below .500.

    It’s pretty obvious who I want… Any of the top 4 SS. Falvey needs to step up and win the bid.

    Any more requirements you want to add to your question to get the answer you want? Which fast food chain are you interested in going to that’s average, within a 2 mile drive, assuming you don’t want to spend more than $6, and serves McChickens? We should be looking for a long term solution at SS. And yep, that’s going to cost some money. The books are damn near pristine from bad investments. The free agent SP market is a graveyard of poor investments. So why not invest on a safer bet like one of the 4 top 10 short stops in the game?

    I think Falvey and Levine will know early in the offseason if Correa will re-sign with the Twins or not. And if not, then move on and pursue the other 3 top FA SS. LA Dodgers have been over the competitive tax threshold for 2 years in a row, hit the “Steve Cohen penalty” this year, and will likely take a step back in spending. The Yankees have to worry about paying Judge a gazillion dollars this offseason. The Cubs are crying poor and not competitive. Boston just paid Story $140 million. All the talk in the first couple years of Falvine’s tenure was “financial flexibility”. Whelp, here we are. The books have never been cleaner. If they don’t spend money now for a clear need at SS, it’s never going to happen.

    That isn’t a thing in this year’s free agency class. Spending a ton of money for free agent pitching is also not what this front office was hired to do.

    Relying on Lewis is the biggest risk of all IMO. It’s like the Aaron Hicks situation all over again. Clearing a freeway for him to win the starting job, and if he fails, there’s no one besides Rob Refsnyder types to replace him. Ideally I want a long term solution at SS, then Lewis when he’s ready to go can play CF and fill in at SS/3B. Because let’s be honest, we need a real solution when Buxton misses 50% of the games. Celestino as a sub .600 OPS player ain’t it.

    Go sign one of the top 4 free agent SS. I don’t really care who they end up signing out of Turner, Swanson, Boegarts, and Correa. It just needs to be done. There’s plenty of room in the budget for the long term commitment.

    I am 99% sure you are the only one so far not to have Arraez plugged in at 1B. Thank you for that. He filled in admirably when Sano went down for the season. However, he is no short or long term solution at the position.

    Same thing applies to hitters as well. You would think we’d learn our lesson one of these years, but sports is all about selling hope.

    I’d look to build a combo package around Polanco, Wallner, and Ober. The Marlins likely have different valuations but the gist is to trade our redundancies (LH hitting corner OF, back of the rotation controlled SP, 2B) for one of their SP.

    Priority #1: Trading for a top of the rotation pitcher. The ROI from free agent starting pitching is mostly bad. The risk is too much to give Rodon a 5-6 year guaranteed deal. Work something out with Miami who has a ton of pitching and minimal offensive talent. Priority #2: Sign one of the top 4 free agent SS. Then prepare Royce Lewis to take a ton of fly balls. He will be a primary CF when he returns mid season. Priority #3: Glove first C. If Falvey is going to rely once again on the pitching pipeline, I want a player who can call a good game and help them out. Priority #4: Adding speed and contact skills wherever they see fit.

    Basically where I’m at. I’ve seen what I need to see and I’m not intrigued by the FO duo anymore. Frankly I don’t want them to hand out $100+ million contracts to FA SP. That’s not what they were hired to do, and the ROI on those contracts rarely works out in the favor of the signing team. I would be on board with trading our redundancies on roster and a top prospect or 2 for one of Miami’s starters under control. Or Zac Gallen if Arizona decides it’s time to tear it down. Basically this team needs to win early and often to earn back fans. As well as updating the type of baseball we’ve seen over the last 2 years. Filling the lineup with players who swing for the fences and putz around the bases isn’t cutting it anymore.

    1. Pitching, pitching, pitching. I don’t want to hear about the 2020 lost covid season anymore. They were hired to develop pitching and we need to see more of it. 2. Change the make up of the offense. The feast or famine lineup has floundered. Long term core players like Kepler and Polanco are declining, but still have valuable contracts. Add some contact, add some speed, add some fundamentals to the lineup. 3. Strike gold on a reclamation project. Before people throw a hissy fit, every team signs them every year. 4. Sign one of the top FA SS or a right handed hitting OF who can play CF.

    A much needed assessment heading into the offseason. A lot of this is not ideal - especially Mahle and Winder where they can’t find anything wrong structurally in MRI scans. A couple of these players will bounce back next year and contribute. A couple of these players won’t truly bounce back for the rest of their careers. I am very concerned that Kirilloff’s injury is career ending. In football, tearing your ACL twice means your days are over playing professionally. We’ll see if it’s different in baseball. As others mentioned, this article could have listed another 6-7 players who have had recurring injuries in the last couple of years. I think @LastOnePickedis spot on. 2023 is going to be the year to rehab these players and ship them off to start a rebuild. Given the horrid attendance numbers and uncertainty about the local TV contract, odds are slim we will see a ~$150 million payroll in 2023.

    Spot on, stringer bell. The offense never held up their end of the bargain. I would look at the roster on B-Ref and see all of these guys with OPS+ over 100. It never jived with what we saw on the field. Jose Miranda needs 4 RBI in the final 3 games, otherwise we will end the season with no one hitting 70 RBI. Brutal. If the pitching wasn’t over performing at the beginning of the year, we would finish the year with 90+ losses. It was predictable that they’d regress to the mean, and it was assumed that the offense would take over more. Didn’t happen. It was also planned that prospects would take over throughout the season for under performing vets. That also didn’t happen. Roster turnover needs to happen. We need to strip away the redundancies on the roster. Mainly our abundance of LH hitting corner OF, and back of the rotation SP. IMO it’s time to say goodbye to some long term core players like Kepler and Polanco. If we end up running it back with the vast majority of players and blame it all on injuries, that’s a recipe for another below .500 season.

    Thanks for doing the weekly recaps for another season Nick. I haven’t had the desire to turn on a Twins game since the first Cleveland series in September. If Gordon is indeed viewed as an OF, it only adds to the redundancy on roster. Something’s gotta give this offseason. Kepler, Kirilloff, Larnach, Wallner, Contreras, Cave, and Gordon - all LH hitting corner OF. Some how, some way, the powers that be need to build up Ober so he can handle a SP workload.

    Look at their game logs on baseball reference. Both were reduced to less than 80 pitches throughout the season. If that is over extending them then both are bullpen arms.

    Why would we not do this? That was exactly why we hired Derek Falvey specifically. To emulate their pitching pipeline and success over a decade. If he can’t do that, then he’s not going to lead us to anything and it’s time to move on.
