  1. You remember how Houston got Pressley (and Verlander, and Cole, and . . .) right?
  2. Because whether you like it or not, every team will always weigh the dollars and cents cost/benefits before making any move. We can pretend they don’t, we can get angry when they do, but they will always do it. They can use some of that money toward a trade, or toward arbitration raises, or toward extensions. Maybe the Pohlads will pocket it, but I think Falvey has done enough to let us trust him under a (BS or not) budget that isn’t going away until the team is contracted or MLB vanishes into thin air.
  3. Man, you’d think the way the season has gone the front office would have earned a little more trust. I guess not... I’m glad they didn’t pay this much for a reliever. Trade for a couple arms and continue to steamroll through the league.
  4. Well, they’re 40-20 with a 9.5 game lead in the division. There’s still almost two months left to make multiple trades. Might as well start thinking about the Vikings, I guess.
  5. Wait, I thought signing Marwin Gonzalez was a mistake? Oh well. Maybe it will be a mistake again if he has a bad June.
  6. I’m trying to answer a question that you (apparently?) asked using hypotheticals. They could sign everyone under slot if they wanted to. The slots exist to limit what draft picks can make. You mentioned your “argument” in a different post. I’m not sure who you’re arguing with, because it isn’t me.
  7. I think the confusion is coming by conflating draft spending with free agent spending. Teams can spend up to X, but failing to sign a guy means they can spend up to X-Y. What they do with Y is, to my knowledge, more or less unregulated with the exception that they can’t use it on their other draft picks.
  8. Think of the draft pools as potential spending. If they don’t sign a guy, they no longer have the potential to spend the amount slotted for that pick.
  9. My less-than-totally-informed preference is Langeliers from Baylor. His defense is already more than good enough for MLB, and it seems like his bat has come on very strong since his hand has had some time to heal. That said, I’ll root for whoever they pick to be successful.
  10. A compelling and well considered argument. I don’t know how the Twins can keep him after reading this.
  11. I’m assuming German is probably his native language, since that’s where he grew up. A lot of people will slip into their native languages consciously or unconsciously in testy or irritating moments no matter how well or long they’ve been speaking another. In any case, this is a far cry from Barry Bonds & Jeff Kent.
  12. Sorry for the barrage of replies. I meant to edit my other post responding to yours, but looks like it’s too late. I want to mention that there’s recent precedent for this exact sort of trade happening. Chris Sale comes to mind. Verlander. Gerrit Cole. Heck, Frank Viola if you go back further. These are off the top of my head. I’m sure there are plenty of others.
  13. I hope they don’t consider Thorpe untouchable.
  14. Basically I’m describing Thor. The Mets are bad. It’s also not unthinkable that the Nationals would unload Scherzer and/or Strasburg if things don’t turn around.
  15. They should send him down and let him play everyday. It’s a pretty simple decision.
  16. There is no good reason whatsoever to trade anyone who has contributed to the big league club this year. Just a couple weeks ago, people wanted Castro to be DFA’d. Then Austudillo and Garver both went down with injuries. Depth is a good thing, and it’s certainly different from having a surplus. Trading Schoop or Adrianza or whoever else—and replacing them with rookies—is asking for trouble. Remember when there wasn’t a centerfielder on the roster for, like, two years? Personally, I think both Lewis and Kirilloff should be on the table if it means a top line starter with multiple years of control. Sell from the minors and try to win the dang World Series.
  17. Who moderates the moderators???
  18. I don't doubt that you're being serious. My gripe is that it's the same point you and a few others have made many times on numerous threads. We already know your opinion. But the trade happened. There's a place to discuss it if you wish to do so without taking over every thread.
  19. Here's a space where people can talk about the Pressley trade: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/33000-trades-from-previous-seasons/. If this thread also gets taken over by that same old discussion I'm going to use every new thread to workshop portions of my screenplay.
  20. Someone also mentioned the Knoblauch trade earlier, which yielded some core players for those early 2000s teams. Otherwise...uh...does Sam Fuld for Tommy Milone count?
  21. Here’s a space to debate old trades, since a large number of threads have been re-hashing this very debate, on topic or not.
  22. The problem with your theory is that players on expiring contracts still contribute something if the team doesn’t trade them. The choices aren’t “trade or nothing.” The choices are “trade or two months of that player’s performance during a pennant race.” So if you trade a guy that has been helping the team contend, you might get a prospect or two back, but you’re also costing yourself that player’s performance down the stretch. That’s why contenders don’t sell at the deadline. The final two months of the season are immediately worth more than whatever prospect(s) they’d get in a trade. If they’re out of contention by the deadline, then it’s a different story.
