  1. Arreaz started 42 at second, 18 in LF, and 15 at third. In the last two games I have recently seen he has cost a run by not catching a grounder cleanly, tho he got the out at first. I hope that doesn't become or remain a problem.
  2. My guess on Romero is that it has something to do with coming to TwinsFest on a tourist visa, and getting some spending money and room and board.
  3. I wonder how often the Twins would have drafted someone picked by one of the ten (for example) teams who drafted in front of them. There must be some who the Twins liked and had an idea what it would take to sign them. How much communication is there between teams (we are going to take X if he is available)?
  4. It was World Wildlife Day. May have had something to do with it.
  5. Gonzalez has played 130 more games at shortstop than Adrianza, and his career grades are about equal. He seems to do OK at 3B, where about 25% of the time he has to cover the whole left side of the infield. Even if he has declined in the past year or two, he might be used in an emergency over Gordon, unless this is the year Gordon is really deserving of a promotion.
  6. The world just learned of the Astros’ cheating. Inside baseball, it was an open secret. This article from the Washington Post advances the discussion, I think. https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/mlb/astros-cheating-open-secret/2020/02/11/1830154c-4c41-11ea-9b5c-eac5b16dafaa_story.html Before the World Series, several Dodgers reached out to Brian Dozier, for example. The fans can keep Astro players out of the All-Star game, as a start. As for Marwin, I think we may be demanding a level of heroics that few of us could achieve.
  7. In 2017 Marwin Gonzalez had 20 walks and 69 SO at home, but 29 walks and 38 SO on the road. He was a better hitter on the road, for what it's worth.
  8. Julien apparently had Tommy John surgery in September.
  9. He failed during his show me contract, especially the last two months after he was traded to a contender. Oakland's biggest need next year is supposedly relief pitching and they didn't resign him (what was the mutual option?). I wouldn't pay him more than Romo, and he should be available for much less than $4 million. He will probably go to Driveline or somewhere this winter, and maybe there will be good reports. But I wouldn't conclude that the Twins should be locked in on him.
  10. Duran got an exciting review today by BPro's Prospect staff. The first sentence: "You won’t find many pitchers jump in prospect rankings as much as 6-foot-5 right hander Jhoan Duran will this offseason." The last sentence: The athletic body, the mound presence, how he attacks the zone, and the nasty repertoire all combined looks like a No. 2 starter, or better. – Keanan Lamb
  11. Keanan Lamb's review of the Florida State All-Star game in BPro had this to say about Jeffers, in part: With a large frame that’s an excellent target for pitchers, apt receiving abilities and above-average arm, he is the rare catching prospect that blends both offensive and defensive upside. Positionally speaking, he should be considered as one of the top ten catching prospects in the minors with a continued strong 2019 campaign. https://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/article/50909/notes-from-the-field-the-florida-state-league-all-star-game/
  12. I wonder if the Auburn players in the NCAA tournament have anything to do with the delay. There is Will Holland at 5, and Julien (who broke Frank Thomas' RBI record at Auburn last year, but regressed this year). The Auburn coach believes Julien "will have an interesting decision to make".
  13. BPro article today: Expanding the Zone: Examining 2019 College Pitcher Workloads. Of the 10 pitchers, only Matt Canterino and Nick Lodolo have been used as starters in nearly all of their three seasons. Portion of games where pitcher had over 110 pitches: Canterino 12% 2017, 12% 2018, 13% 2019. For 2019, Manoah was at 44%, Jameson 38%, Thompson and Kirby 29%. Games in which a pitcher was not provided enough rest for the length of his outing, Pitch Smart Violations per game: Manoah 25%,Jameson 25%, Canterino 0% (6 and 12% in 2017 and 2018).
  14. Marwin is now something like 10 for 20 against Kluber. And I like him on the left side during the shifts. Allowing Rogers to pitch the 9th, instead of the automatic closer, was a nice move. Maybe we can avoid the bloated bullpen and still keep relievers fresh.
  15. For some reason the manager of Houston said in an interview prior to one of the playoff games last year that Gonzalez was their team's best defensive player at all four infield positions.
  16. He made John Sickels fantasy orientated prospect list today at #100: "could advance more rapidly than many players with more press".
  17. According to Jayson Stark: The union is said to have offered two new ideas: 1) All 30 teams would be required to expand rosters to 28 in September. Roster expansion is now optional. 2) All teams also would be required to add four minor leaguers to the rosters after the conclusion of the minor-league playoffs — and since that would increase the total number to more than 28, each team would have to announce a 28-man “active” roster for every game from Sept. 1 on, similar to the way NFL teams must announce “actives” and “inactives” before games. Starting pitchers could not be part of those inactives, according to the latest proposal.
  18. Some numbers from BPro's new offensive metric, Deserved Runs Created + (100 is average). fwiw AAA, 2018: Reed 139 Cave 108 Wade 102 Granite 79 (but 114 in 2017) Astudillo 126 Sano 128 For 2018 MLB: Astudillo 127 Escobar 114 Rosario 113 Kepler 111 Austin 100 Mauer 97 Polanco 97 Cave 90 Schoop 82 Sano 77 Buxton 57
  19. It was reported that Houston was willing to sign Perez, though I don't think it was mentioned what sort of deal was considered. With Houston having MLB's best pitcher development program, it does suggest that Perez has something to work with. Good to see your Morton/Gibson comparison. Collin McHugh was picked up by Houston on waivers. Maybe there is reason to be hopeful about the Perez signing.
  20. The second group of ten pitchers is in Fort Myers for individual instruction. They will be joined next Monday by Brusdar Graterol, Jordan Balazovic, Jhoan Duran, Blayne Enlow, Prelander Berroa, Luis Rijo, Josh Winder and Jorge Alcala, according to Dan Hayes. I wonder how many of the pitchers Tom has mentioned are in camp now, and how the new instructional program is going.
  21. It is often not real helpful to compare the total minor league numbers of a player signed out of high school with a player signed after graduating from college. In their age 23 seasons, both playing in AA, Navaretto and Turner had basically the same OPS. [.619]. Turner improved to .686 the following year, repeating AA, and was selected by Cincinnati. Turner had quite a few more strikeouts and walks than Navaretto, so I remain hopeful that Brian can have a Drew Butera type of career.
  22. I don't think Arraez will be protected or selected. If he played more positions well, or was a better baserunner, or hit for more power and drew more walks, it would be another story.
  23. I think it is Engelb Vielma you are referring too, and it took me a while to remember, even though I saw him make an amazing play in the one minor league game I have been able to attend. He was waived and selected by 5 teams last winter, finally traded to Baltimore for PTBNL, and had 7 AB. If Hinch's statement that Marwin G was Houston's best defensive shortstop is not hyperbole, I would offer him the starting SS job and overpay him.
  24. Delmon is batting cleanup for the Navegantes, the Venezuelan team that features our Luis Arreaz leading off with an 978 OPS, 5 BB and 4SO. Delmon is leading the team with 5 HR, but has 19 SO and 3 BB and a 764 OPS. Astudillo plays for the Caribes, has yet to strike out in 68 AB, and has a 894 OPS.
