Article: MIN 2, CHW 1: Berrios Reaches 200 Ks
dougd replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think Trevor may be an excellent traditional closer for the Twins the next few years. The clearly defined role might be good for his health, and it appears he has the temperament and swinging strike rate to succeed. -
There are at least a few of us who wonder why Brian Navaretto is not considered a prospect, at least for a defense-first backup catcher. He had a bit of a down year at throwing out runners, only 40%. His framing runs saved is 10.6 at BPro, compared to Willians AAA score of 1.3 (Mitch Garver is -8.8, but was 3.3 in AAA last year). Overall Brian is ranked excellent for saving runs defensively. No framing stats for Ben R, but he has cut his Passed Balls from 15 to 4 this year. The usual response is to recite his minor league OPS. But he started in the minor leagues out of high school, not college. And it appears he has made quite a bit of improvement this year. A .246 average, one less extra base hit than Ben R. He doesn't draw enough walks yet to get his OPS respectable. He seems to be on the same pace as Butera, who has found MLB employment for a good number of years.

The Prospect Summary indicates that Jose Miranda did not play, although he is mentioned in the game summary. He had FM's first RBI, and in the 3 run 5th inning was intentionally walked with no outs after AK's double in order to face Travis Blankenhorn, batting cleanup with an 1.3 OPS at the time. He has had quite a productive last couple weeks.

Article: BREAKING: Twins Trade Rodney To A's
dougd replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The cupboard is pretty bare at Rochester for relievers. Only Reed has been above average since July 1. Curtis has had some recent scoreless outings. -
In his last seven games, Magill has given up an earned run in six of them. In his previous nine games, Belisle had given up earned runs in one game (and lots of runs in that game).

Article: 2018 Twins Midseason Top Prospect List: 11-15
dougd replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In their Futures Game Preview, BPro said of Thorpe: After dipping his toes back into competitive waters last year he’s been downright electric at points in a gloves-further-off campaign at Double-A this year, striking out 104 batters in 82-plus innings with a deep four-pitch arsenal. The fine command’s still winding its way back, and he’s been hittable at points. But it’s safe to say he’s reemerged as one of the more exciting arms in a sneaky-deep Twins system. —WK- 37 replies

CJ Wittmann at BPro has this to say about Gonsalves today: Gonsalves has always been an underrated prospect in the Twins’ system. The lefty boasts plus command of an above-average fastball, plus changeup, and average curveball. He can really sequence and attacks hitters differently each time through. He could be in the big leagues soon and pitch there for a while.

Nothing against Littell or the trade, but maybe Huascar Ynoa will be in the majors sometime as well. In his last start,: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 ER/R, BB, 9 K. CJ Wittman of BPro mentioned him in May 30 Minor League Update: Ynoa is the younger brother of former $4.2M dollar bonus baby Michael Ynoa. Huascar was signed by the Twins during the 2014 J2 period for $800K and later traded to the Braves for Jaime Garcia. He features a plus fastball, average changeup and slightly below-average curveball but the main concerns have always been his well-below-average command. He’s likely headed for a bullpen role in the future but only 1 BB in 6 IP is encouraging. Off topic, but the next player mentioned was: Jose Miranda, 2B, Twins (Low-A Cedar Rapids): 3-5, 2 2B, HR, R, 6 RBI. Miranda was a 2016 second-round pick by the Twins out of Puerto Rico. Miranda had a solid end to the 2017 season and was considered one of the better hitting prospects in that league. He provides average defensive value all over the diamond but he’s gotten off to a slow start this year at the plate. If he could hit at a fringe-average level with the same power grade, he could be a utility piece in the future.

Article: Why Isn't Mitch Garver Playing More?
dougd replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Garver has had about 3 times as many passed balls per inning as Wilson in their respective careers. His caught SB % in the minor leagues is 37%, compared to Wilson's 24% in the major leagues, however. Other catchers: Willians Astudillo (who has played every position except CF and P) has an even higher PB rate than Garver, and a 32% caught stealing %. Ben Rortvedt has 25 PB in 1154 innings, the highest % of the group. His caught SB % is 35. Brian Navaretto has about the same PB % as Garver, but about a 50% caught stealing rate. He is also starting to hit, and while 3 years older than Ben R, is two levels higher. -
Article: BREAKING NEWS: Jason Castro Out for the Year
dougd replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Is there any chance that Brian Navarreto will be able to help back up at some point if necessary? He is hitting better this year at Chattanooga, although that is probably not sustainable. Despite not hitting, he was a Florida State League All-Star last year. The press release noted: Navarreto's assertive defense has propelled him to an All-Star Selection. He has caught 18 of 36 runners to throw out a staggering 50 percent of would-be base-stealers. The backstop has committed just two errors in over 300 innings of catching as well, and has been extremely effective blocking pitches this season.- 75 replies

Trade and Tax - the new baseball problem

the owners will need to pay more to their accountants and lobbyists to deal with this, and will have nothing left over to pay their minor league players a living wage. -
Article: Twins Daily 2018 Top Prospects: #7 Brent Rooker
dougd replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Today at BPro, Rooker was Derek Florko's pick for next year's top 101, calling him possibly one of the more elite bats in all of minor league baseball. He noted: The swing is not flashy, but he still manages to create a ton of power with efficient movements, movements that in his own words were created by watching “film of the best hitters in the world and find things that they all have in common, then I take those principles and try to apply them to my swing.” -
Article: What Do The Twins See In Tyler Kinley?
dougd replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think Haley was picked because of his pretty good performance as a starter in AAA. In the DWL he had 5.3K/9, but a good whip. Whereas Kinley has 14.7K/9. Something is there to work with if he has started to figure things out, even if the chances aren't good. -
His winter league numbers are pretty good.... 18IP, 29K, 4H, 8W. He does like to hit people. Maybe he will be the Twins enforcer. Don't get a big lead or Tyler is coming in.

BPro had their AFL preview on Surprise, and this is what Steve Givarz said about Miller: Miller can play a good shortstop, which should not be discounted to an organization, it’s important at all levels. His arm plays there, he has quality footwork, and can make the tough plays with ease. It’s just unfortunate that Miller lacks much offensive upside. He lacks much strength and is more of a punch-and-judy type of hitter. —SG

Article: Charting A Twins Playoff Rotation
dougd replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think it will be Gibson in ALDS Game 4 on Monday Oct 9 vs Kluber, both with 3 days rest, and Berrios in Game 5 on Wednesday Oct 11. I think Colon will be on the roster. He can hold runners on first with a quick move and has lots of experience at it, and can cover first on the grounders much better than Mejia. Even in his bad outings, he has been mostly good the first couple innings. I assume he is willing to join the bullpen crew. If the Twins have a 2-1 lead going into Game 4, and Gibson has pitched poorly in Game 1, you could start Mejia and hope to get into the 7th inning between him and Colon.- 78 replies

Article: 2017 Chattanooga Lookouts Roster Preview
dougd replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I enjoyed a Lookouts game at Knoxville (Cubs) last year. The stadium is actually 20 miles east of Knoxville, near the junction of the road to the Smokies and Dollywood. Nice stadium, atmosphere, cheap and fun.- 25 replies

Chris Sale's first 80 appearances in the major leagues were as a relief pitcher, tho he spent almost no time in the minors. It is not impossible that Jay will still be a starter at some point.

Article: Press Start: May Changes His Game (Again)
dougd replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
During the Phillies broadcast of their Twins game, the MPH flashed on every pitch in the box that showed the pitch count. It is not just spring training, it seems to be the attitude that the only data presented is what the announcers believe to be important. So many other teams/networks do a better job. -
