  1. I have zero doubt he believes every word he says. He says stuff like that all the time and his transactions back that fact that he believes the way he does. If I was a GM, I'd call Stewart daily to try and fleece him.
  2. The whole article cracks me up. My favorite part: 'Stewart: “I try not to even think with people like that. I try to think with the people who think logically. And if you are thinking logically and we won 79 games last year, with the additions of Greinke, Miller, Clippard, Segura, people that make your team better, I think it is impossible for us to only win 78 games. Like I said, they predicted we would lose 96 last year.”' First there's the assumption that if there weren't any roster moves at all they've win the same amount of games this year as last year which discounts the fact that player performances change year to year as does sequencing. Second, it discounts that other teams made moves too, and their players performances and sequencing also change. Now, of course they could win more than the projections, no doubt, but to preach about speaking logically and then say what he did in bold is pretty hilarious.
  3. 'The reason for trading Plouffe, future cost. He is still worth his salary this season (we hope). But is he a $10 million player?' 10M a year, in today's game, isn't that much for a starting caliber veteran. Plouffe has been worth 20M+ or more for the last two seasons. I have zero doubt he'll be worth his 7M+ salary this year.
  4. Well, if actions speak louder than words, I'd say the latter.
  5. What are the starting position questions? The only one I can think of is whether or not they keep Buxton at CF.
  6. Dozier is the new Cuddyer. A perfectly, ever so slightly, above average player. But a leader type, a fan favorite and a guy comfortable talking to the camera. I doubt he's going anywhere any time soon. I'm fine with that, cause I like him and he's still a valuable player.
  7. It's a bit sad that a pitcher we traded Span for three years ago has stories written about him talking about how they don't need to rush him because the 26 year old still has two options left. This is the supposed Ace we got for a very good and low priced leadoff hitter and above average defensive CF? In any event, I figured he'd end up a reliever back when we got him. So it'd be nice if they threw him in there this year, while our bullpen is underwhelming anyway, so we can see how he'll do.
  8. This, this, a thousand times this. Thank you.
  9. It's my understanding Kepler is a plus defender, even in CF. Is that right? If it is, why would we want to move him to 1B eventually? If/when Mauer gets moved off 1B, wouldn't it make more sense to move Sano to 1B and leave the plus defender, Kepler, in the OF?
  10. perhaps it just comes from frustration that advanced stats get slammed because they aren't 100% perfect yet the alternative is the eye test which also clearly isn't 100% perfect. This extends to projection systems as well. I'm guessing Law uses some form of that too. I don't think he randomly guesses.
  11. As opposed to all the other rational posts on this thread coming at it from the other side that aren't deemed as conversation stoppers? Kind of my point. In any event, like I said, most teams are putting a lot of money and effort into analytical teams and making their decisions based on them. They seem to believe it helps them more than they way it was done before.
  12. By Fangraphs do you mean ZiPS? For the record, they just get that from Dan S. who does a chat for Fangraphs but isn't an actual member of Fangraphs. In regards to why Law thinks Buxton is better than what another projection model projects (not predicts), Law has his own opinion. Not sure what the point of pointing out what 'Fangrapghs" projects when looking at what Law says. Law isn't affiliated with Fangraphs (or ZiPS).
  13. Hopefully soon, we'll have an OF of Rosario, Kepler and Buxton. THAT would be a fun OF to watch.
  14. I sometimes wonder how clearly someone needs to say something for people to just believe that's what they meant. People try so hard to lawyer people's words. Happens all the time in regards to what Ryan and now with Molitor, at least when they say something unpopular or say something that just doesn't make sense. I'm not sure we have to here Molitor say live and on camera with his hand on the bible, after clearly hearing the question in it's entirety, that 'there is a zero percent chance he plays 3B even once this year so help me God' in order to finally believe that Molitor and the team are going to do everything humanly possible to keep Sano off 3B. The point is clear. They have no intention at all of playing him at 3B this year. That is their plan.
  15. Seems The President is considering Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval. A Rebublican.
  16. What might have been a good idea is if they had decided to alternate Mauer and Sano between 1b and DH and then sign a guy like Fowler to play a corner for two years. Then they wouldn't have needed Park, and Sano wouldn't be in the OF.
  17. With Ryan at the helm, I have always gotten the feeling that the team is built in order to try to be competitive for the division. To his credit, in the 2000s he accomplished that. I have never seen him really go for it at the deadline and I've never seen him even try to build a team in the offseason where the goal was to crush the division and make a roster built to really do damage in the playoffs. Probably why we've only been to one ALCS under him. And I HIGHLY doubt any of that ever changes with him at the helm.
  18. I WISH the pitching market in today's game would get you a #3 starter for 2 yr/16M. Pelfrey going to the Tigers is a 'blessing' for Twins fans (if you believe in blessings).
  19. For his career, Suzuki's numbers are better in the 2nd half than the 1st half (to include last year). Not sure how that jives with the prevailing idea he wears down so much and that negatively effects his production.
  20. Twins scouts liked Correia, Worley, Meyer (as a frontline starter type) and Pelfrey and so on. Ryan liked Pelfrey enough to give him two more years.
  21. I believe his numbers were greatly helped by a unsustainable BABIP. Like Santana's in 2014. And that Yankee stadium is more of a hitter's park than TF. So we will see. Some seem to have no problem talking about his numbers last year as proof he'll be good. Isn't that also SSS? Or is it only okay to use SSS when it makes a player look good?
  22. We might hear about how much harder it is to hit in Target as opposed to Yankee Stadium as we see that .350ish BABIP come back down to league averagish :-) .417 BABIP at Yankee Stadium, .288 Away.
  23. Nothing surprising about this.
  24. Yeah, but a HUGE hit it was. HUGE. Fantastic book!
  25. Fangraphs has Howard a bit higher. A hair over 20. But yeah, nothing wrong thinking Punto was almost as valuable as Howard because defense matters. The thing that's really awesome is Howard has played way more and still barely has more WAR.
