  1. Still way softer than many a market. If this was New York, Boston, LA, etc, they would be getting pounded constantly in print and radio for this ridiculous decision.
  2. and that pounding will affect him down the road too. And, yes, obviously a poor decision.
  3. Cuddy, despite his arm and the way he played the bag, was not a good OF. Danny Santana, Bless his soul for the effort, also was not a good OF.
  4. As much as I love Trout and respect the way he wants to play, Harper (and Carlos Correa, Bautista, etc) got it right. Players can choose to be reserved in their actions, but those that choose to show more emotion while playing this game should be allowed to do so without them getting beaned for it. Or another player on their team get beaned for it. Exceptions would be when they do something like Gomez did, which I referenced earlier. Something (not a beaning) should be done about that.
  5. This decision was made last summer. But yeah, May wasn't their competition. He was assured a spot in the bullpen a long time ago.
  6. Man I love this post so much! When demoted May had the best WAR of any starter in the rotation by a good margin. Like he was the only one over 1.0 and he was close to 2.0. He had the most Ks/9 and the 2nd least BB/9. At the All Star break, he still led all Twins starters in WAR by half a win.
  7. That's probably the best idea. To just take out FA acquisition out of the equation all together. And how convenient that would be since that is what Ryan is most criticized for :-)
  8. As the called strike zones continue to expand, walks are going down. Hughes did the same thing from 2013 to 2014. And do we know a few more walks will kill him/his numbers? Now, is he going to continue to have a BABIP against almost 40 points higher than league average? Not sure how a 28 point differenrce in BABIP isn;t too out of the ordinary, but see below. 'Unsurprisingly, May posted an unsightly .340 BABIP last season, backed up by a subpar hard-hit rate of 29.8 percent. His approach shouldn't bear all the blame for that — his defense didn't do him any favors, and he had a minor-league BABIP of .312, so that wasn't too out of the ordinary. Still, he probably wouldn't have allowed so many hits without pounding the zone.'
  9. What kind of good luck do you think he was having? A well above above average BABIP against?
  10. I think he has the talent to be a #2-#3 type.
  11. Decision was made last year and solidified in the offseason with the lack of moves.
  12. except there's no guarantee that's what will happen. an article on MLB has Ryan hints he'd like to see him do something else,'"We are going to put him in the bullpen," Ryan said. "I don't know how they'll use him. If he throws two innings, three innings, I don't care. I kind of like those multi-inning relievers."' in any event, if the bullpen had been addressed properly, it wouldn't be necessary (assuming it is, which I question)..
  13. unfortunately, by then, he'll be 30 or so and pigeonholed into being a reliever in the league.
  14. Almost as surprising as if we had read, 'Trevor May will start the season in the Twins rotation.'
  15. Problem is, they don't have plenty of BETTER starters, so it hurts the 2016 team by having inferior options in the rotation. Second, they need good relievers because they did nothing to address the bullpen, the self-proclaimed #1 priority in the offseason. And yes, it is unfair to May, who did nothing to deserve the demotion last year to begin with. You say boo-hoo cry me a river, I say unfair is unfair even for professional ball players. These guys work hard most of their lives to get to the show and their effort shouldn't be minimalized because you think they should just be happy with having an inferior role.
  16. No surprise at all. He was never in competition for a spot, regardless of what the FO said.. This was obvious even before TR did nothing to improve the bullpen this offseason. What a waste of talent..
  17. As Correa, 21, put it: "If a hitter styles after a big home run in an important part of the game, a pitcher shouldn't be allowed to drill him in the elbow with a 98 mph fastball his next at-bat. That hurts. "If a pitcher strikes me out in the ninth inning with two outs and the tying run on second, he's going to pound his chest or point to the sky or do a fist pump, and he should. But I'm not going to throw my bat at him for that. We should be on an even playing field when it comes to showing emotion. I should be able to pimp or bat flip if I beat him in the same situation."
  18. I hope Murphy does as well, but I like Hicks and want him to do well too.
  19. Yeah, I know that. I think he will be eventually, if not some time this year then next year. Ellsbury is injury prone and Beltran is a FA next year.
  20. I'm hoping Aaron Hicks has a fantastic career as a starting player.
  21. you keep saying Ortiz. Who are you talking about?
  22. I'm not sure I said that. I think just because the team that just got burned believes they have been dissed, doesn't mean they actually were. Just because they act as if they were dissed doesn't mean they were. A person shouldn't be judged poorly because an irrational reaction to an action (or post:-)) occurs. As far as an apology goes, I don't think he did nor do I think that he thinks that he should have. I agree with him.
  23. Except here's the thing, they are assuming it's bad sportsmanship instead of just joy. And they are assuming that right after they just got burned (in the case of Bautista, during a playoff game). The sensitivity is already high to begin with by being pissed they gave up a HR in a key situation. Probably takes very little emotion shown on the part of the opponent to be perceived as a 'diss' at that point. Baseball is a game, a game should be fun, and showing emotion and/or some flair shouldn't be a baseball crime. The example I gave above of what Gomez did, THAT is clearly and flagrantly disrespectful and worthy of condemnation.
  24. I remember last year when a mostly powerless hitter (something like less than 10 HR his whole professional career) was supposedly disrespectful to one of our pitchers after we walked a guy to get to him and he hit a HR. Here's a guy who almost never hits with power who got excited because he hit a HR and people were advocating for a beaning to happen. How about putting the blame where it belongs? Now when a guy does something like Gomez did last year, when he hit a HR, stared at the pitcher forever and then while running the bases he barked at the pitcher the whole way, THAT is over the line. THAT is blatant disrespect and there's nothing joyful about that.
