  1. But will Tulo be 10 times better than Esco next year? Because he's going to be 10 times as expensive... I have to think you can find a better use for 18 million dollars than "upgrading" from Esco to Tulo.
  2. How about July 26 at home against the Yankees? Twins get out to a 5-0 lead after 3 innings, still lead 5-4 in the Ninth, only to have A-Rod hit his third homer of the day, and then lose on a 3 run homer to, of all people, John Ryan Murphy.
  3. Molitor seems to enjoy taking the hitter who performed the best in the previous game, and sitting them on the bench for the next game.
  4. To quote Meatsauce, Glen Perkins should take two weeks off and quit.
  5. True Fact: The Los Angeles Angels translates to The The Angels Angels. Least creative team name ever.
  6. I don't think anyone is taking issue with running for Sano or Plouffe. I think the issue is with using Nunez for Sano, and Robinson for Plouffe. Reverse that, and Eddie stays in the game, and this might be a completely different conversation.
  7. I would add as number 6, pinch hitting Danny Santana for Buxton in the 9th. Santana has had 4 PA's (including last night's) since July 31, all as a PH, all of which resulted in outs. He has a greater than 13/1 k/bb ratio, and OPS's .490 against righties. Buxton was already 2-3 on the night, and is actually better against righties, OPS'ing .638, and has a better (but still bad) 8/1 k/bb ratio--fun fact: both Buxton and Santana have 5 walks on the year. Buxton needed 121 PA's to do that, Santana 267. By just about any metric, Buxton was a better bet to get on base to lead off the ninth.
  8. You're assuming Dick is familiar with/capable of using the internet. That is a big and reckless assumption.
  9. Shields from the past 8 years would be better than most of what we have available for next year's rotation. The Shields that showed up this year, and might be what Shields is now, is not. He's not better than Gibson in anything other than k/9--the same goes for Milone and May. And there's no reason to think that based on what Duffey has shown this year, and Berrios' track record, that those two wouldn't be better.
  10. Now who's twisting whose words? In a vacuum, of course I'd rather have Shields. BUT... This isn't a vacuum. Not only would Shields block Duffey/Berrios/May from getting to be in the rotation, we'd have to give up more than just Nolasco straight up to get him. If we trade Stewart, it's at his lowest value. If we trade Polanco, that's a potential key piece to our next playoff infield gone. And all for a guy, who by FIP, would be our 5th best starter this year after May, Gibson, Milone, and Mike Pelfrey. If you include Duffey (whose FIP is half a run better) and Berrios (FIP in AAA 1.5 runs better), Shields would be 7th.
  11. Are you really using wins as a metric in assessing pitcher performance? You might as well look at HBP's to judge the worth of a hitter. And who cares if he's striking out more than a batter/inning if it's not having a positive impact on his performance--which based on the numbers I shared it isn't? And if Shields is one of the most talented pitchers in baseball, why isn't he better at, well, pitching?
  12. Shields (out of 83 qualified pitchers) is 52nd in ERA, 62nd in WHIP, 65th in FIP, 69th in WAR, and 81st in bb/9. Which of those numbers screams "one of the best starting pitchers in baseball" to you?
  13. Both trades are awful. The Twins actually have a fair amount of intriguing young arms at or near MLB right now (May, Gibson, Duffey, Berrios, Milone), with a solid passel potentially 2-3 years away (Gonsalves, Batts, Stewart, Thorpe, Jorge). Trading for Shields (and having to pay him $21M for the next 3 years) is a horrible idea unless the Padres are taking at least 2 bad contracts back AND including a catcher.
  14. That granny is why you put up with some frustrating at-bats. That, and the fact that he plays great defense, has an excellent arm, and is only 23.
  15. I'll say it right now--Esco should be the everyday starter until Nick Gordon is ready. TR shouldn't even bother looking for a replacement (if one is presented to him, by all means investigate).
  16. Off the top of my head I don't know any, and I don't have the time to do any research. I guess I would also ask if there are any comparables to Berrios out there where teams brought pitchers up early, and wish they had the extra year afterwards.
  17. They do, because the underlying logic is the same. You're saying a GM should do anything he can to make his team better if they're in a pennant race, and let the chips fall where they may in the future. If that's your approach, it makes logical sense to clear out the farm system every time a team is in the playoff hunt. I think that should be done to turn a good team into a great one, but not to turn an average team into a decent one, which is the situation the Twins found/find themselves in.
  18. I'm fine with bringing Berrios up for the stretch run this year, as long as we keep him down for at least the same amount of time next year. Why? Because Berrios will be so much more valuable for the entire year in 2022 (his first year of FA if he's brought up now and not sent back down), than for 6-8 starts this year. Bringing him up now is the equivalent of trading 30+ Berrios starts at age 28 for 6-8 Berrios starts at 21.
  19. That's an approach with a potentially awful downside to it. That's the rationale that makes trading Ramos for Capps a good idea, because it makes the current team better. It's the kind of logic that would make trading Polanco, Kepler, and Gonsalves for Benoit, Cishek, and Papelbon a good idea. To borrow a line that's been used multiple times in this thread, any GM whose plan for the future is "meh, I'm not worried about it, I'll just see what happens when I get there" should be fired.
  20. That is the wrong question. The right question is how much ice cream, and how many times.
  21. There are 4 contenders, and 4 contenders only. KC, due to defense, a great home-field advantage, and a good bullpen. St Louis, due to general excellence across the board. LA, because it'll be tough to beat Grienke/Kershaw twice in the same series. The Mets, because they can throw the best top 3 out there. The Jays don't have enough pitching outside of Price. The Yankees have the best 1-2 pen punch in the league, but that's about it. The Astros strike out way too much, and will have trouble getting runs. The Pirates don't have the difference makers, and the Cubs don't have the pitching.
  22. I don't always agree with mww...but when I do, it's about how Robinson shouldn't be playing.
  23. So no Rosario tonight...Molitor understands we're in a pennant race, right? Trotting out Robinson and his .586 OPS against lefties suggests otherwise...
  24. If that's the case, we should all boycott the game tonight. I looked it up, and the Twins have never had even one female player--talk about sexist.
  25. I do, but what I do at midnight at the dunes by the cape is my business, and not yours, thank you very much.
