  1. The answer to that is Paul Molitor. He was Danny Santana's hitting tutor in the minors, and he's loathe to give up on the kid, even if Santana just isn't going to be another Paul Molitor. Even if Santana is destined to "figure things out," at some point, it ain't happening on the mlb club. Santana needs to go down to AAA and build himself a plan at the plate that's not just "I hope I get a hit." Meanwhile Jorge Polanco already has a pretty good plan at the plate, and it's hard to say his defense is any shakier than Santana's. Twins don't have much to lose by giving Polanco a shot for at least a month. I'm not saying Polanco is better than Tulo, either. I'm saying the price the Rockies will want for him is too steep. The Twins will need some of these guys to keep the team stocked with good talent over the next decade. If you trade away the talent in AAA and AA, you strip the team of its future.
  2. Gosh, what a bad idea this trade is. Especially when you've got a good prospect in Jorge Polanco just waiting to be tested, and you give up nothing for him.
  3. So you take the best defensive 2B in the league and put him at a position he's not used to anymore, then take a minor leaguer that's not quite an mlb ready SS and put him at 2B, where he hasn't been playing. Or Rosario, who also didn't show much at 2B. Going for a high 1st round pick in 2016?
  4. Back to my two themes for this year. 1, don't sell farm before harvest, and 2, keep experimenting with early call-ups. Send Danny Santana to AAA, bring up Jorge Polanco. Do it this week, and let him play SS for a month. Have him work with the fielding coach just like Santana did to smooth out the footwork. Santana's biggest problem still is his approach at the plate. Better for him and the Twins if he works out those problems in AAA than to be a hole in the lineup. Meanwhile, Polanco showed signs of being an exciting ballplayer, another spark plug for this team.
  5. The real tragedy is that Duensing is wasting his talents on this club, when he could be the cornerstone of a dominant Saint Paul Saints. He could pitch in front of adoring crowds, enjoy a renaissance of pitching success, and get a free haircut every seventh inning.
  6. Dereck Rodriguez, Elizabethton Twins (W, 7.0 IP, 2 H’s, 0 ER’s, 0 BB’s, 3 K’s) Call him up!
  7. I'd make Alex Meyer watch this video, then throw like this guy: Could do worse, like skipping stones. Easy.
  8. Casey Fien looks worn out; I'd replace him with Michael Tonkin. Blaine Boyer is hanging on by his fingernails; I'd replace him with Jose Berrios. Brian Duensing is like a yo-yo, sometimes up, sometimes down. Is he worn out, or not getting enough innings? I still can't tell. If he gets much worse, I'd replace him with Taylor Rogers. Point is, even if Duensing needs more innings, that's not the job. These are all experiments to try now, not a month from now. The team needs these guys to get their feet wet, so they can gather data on what works and what doesn't at the highest level. I'll also say the same thing goes for Oswaldo Arcia. The team needs to find out if his bat is back. If so, it's a big advantage batting Arcia behind Sano against righties.
  9. First beer's on me. Well, not ON me, but I'll buy you one!
  10. Man, that's intriguing. I'm in San Diego, which is 91 miles south of Anaheim Stadium. Haven't seen a live Twins game in over a year....
  11. I'm pulling for Alex Wimmers. He's got the brain of a major league pitcher, and now he's got a healthy elbow. I'd love it if this guy was fully back from TJ and mowing 'em down in the minors next season.
  12. Didn't make sense to me either, but try to find a "European Market." Sometimes you can find the yellow cap Maggi Jugo at Hispanic markets, but the really good red cap stuff is only at Asian ones, maybe because it's a little like soy sauce. I found nothing Maggi at any mainstream grocery stores, just a lot of blank stares from shelf stockers.
  13. Miguel Sano is gone for ONE GAME, and look what happens.
  14. The dumpster fire has now spread to adjacent houses... The A's are looking pretty confident at this point.
  15. Tilapia and rice came out pretty good. Added some white wine, some Adobo yellow cap, then some Maggi seasoning. Now it's yum.
  16. Orange roughy? I've seen it at Costco, but never tried it. I will, thanks. Oh, and here's my little seasoning secret: Maggi Seasoning, the European one with the red cap. You can find it at some Asian markets. Best seasoning sauce you can buy. Tastes good on everything. Careful or it can become a fetish. The yellow cap Maggi Jugo is more concentrated and cheaper, but not as good.
  17. I am now cooking tilapia and mixed rice in my pressure cooker. I hope it turns out better than this game.
  18. A beast made plans, and it ganged ugly. Too late to stick a fork in this game, it exploded in the microwave. What a mess, taters all over.
  19. I was just thinking how Billy Butler reminded me of Ron Coomer. Now I'm thinking Butler has a little more pop than Coomer did.
  20. Surprisingly sloppy play by the Twins. This is how teams without great hitting lose ballgames.
  21. Terry Ryan is understandably reluctant to trade young guys from the Twins' very good farm system for short term rentals in situations that can be handled with local talent. As you guys said, Casey Fien, Blaine Boyer and Brian Duensing appear worn out, so it's time to try some fresher arms. My guess is they're looking at Michael Tonkin, Jose Berrios and Taylor Rogers. Going with my earlier posts, this season should still be considered a time for experimenting with rookies and other promising call-ups. It's early enough for these new guys to struggle, then find their game. JR Graham is the biggest mystery. Is he injured? If not, why not use him more? He's got the best power arm in the pen, a great slider, and every time I've seen him he's had electric stuff. His command has gotten better, and he seems confident now. Trevor May has done great so far, taking his move to the pen as an opportunity to work on holding runners better from the set. Everything May does reminds me of the constructive ambition of Brian Dozier. He's building himself into a better pitcher. Sadly, Glenn Perkins has finally collapsed. Stick a fork in him. ;-)
  22. I feel a little bad for Scott Kasmir. 8.1 innings of shutout ball, then he sits down and watches the bull pen blow the lead. Okay, now I stopped feeling bad.
  23. The day Buxton gets back, I'm assuming the OF will be Rosario RF, Buxton CF, Hicks RF. I also assume Molitor will bat Buxton 9th for awhile to get his feet wet. If things pan out well, eventually a good baseball tactics lineup would be 1. Buxton 2. Mauer 3. Dozier 4. Sano 5. Plouffe/Arcia 6. Hicks 7. Rosario 8. Suzuki/Fryer 9. Santana Three main factors. Getting runners on, batting them in, protecting Sano. Buxton, Mauer, Dozier gives you a great chance to get runners on base, in scoring position. Against RH pitchers you bat Arcia behind Sano; against lefties you bat Plouffe behind Sano. Hicks backs up your backup, with Rosario to finish. Finally, you have a reverse #1 with Santana to get on base before Buxton, with Dozier now in cleanup position and Sano protecting Dozier. The DH position becomes a complete musical chairs, depending who plays the field with Arcia behind Sano. Since Rosario and Arcia both bat lefty and both corner OF's, who plays corner OF depends on finer details of Molitor's game day strategy. You can see I'm leaving Torii Hunter out of this lineup. Hunter's place on this team has always been assumed to be mentor/transitional fill-in for rising young stars. He will continue in that role, filling in when the younger players falter at the plate, get injured, etc. That was always the plan. If things go well, Hunter will get lots of rest in the second half.
  24. He double clutched after shifting his eyes to first. That was an embarrassing brain fart, but it wasn't a sign of doom. Fryer is an excellent defensive catcher, has a much better arm than Suzuki, and his bat is better because he's not physically worn down from starting 90 percent of games. I'd start Fryer for a couple weeks, then platoon him and Suzuki 50/50 for the remainder. That way, Suzuki is relatively fresh for the playoff push, we'll know more about Fryer's long term, and meanwhile Chris Herrmann is getting his batting eye back in Rochester.
